He understood, in early times when he was a child. I feel that. When you are young, like 11. No social life, (no woman, or if your a woman no men), no purpose, and poverty overcoming you with issues at home. You just need an escape sometimes. I don’t blame ALL pirates, just some because I understand what he was getting at, when my parents would fight I’d download a game young asf (very skilled encryption and white hat hacker now, and crypto currency + so much more) i would be enticed to download a game pirated. Yes I was wrong. However, it took me away from the pain. I’m not saying it’s right to STEAL or PIRATE. However, people (especially teenagers and children go through traumatic things and they want to get away. God bless that dev for being kind.)

Honestly, I love that JSAB doesn’t openly ridicule or ruin the experience for pirates, just encourages them to buy the game, or just recommend it to friends and stuff. I find that really cool. And for those of you who are curious, the wholesomeness doesn’t end here. There is a casual mode for the story, and there’s a really sweet message that’s like, “we get it, it’s hard sometimes. Aww, the “just shapes and beats” anti-piracy screen is really wholesome. A lot of the people who can’t afford the games they want to play pirate them, and another chunk of the people who pirate games are kids. Maybe not necessarily kids, but minors and people who still have a lot of growing up to do. This take on anti-piracy compared to creeping out the player or just glitching out their save file might actually make people realize there’s more to the game then just the game, there’s actual people who rely on those games for money and who put their heart and soul into it. Anyways, sorry for ranting. I just thought that was touching.

I have to agree. I think it's called epic games, but it's a platform like steam, but every week they have a few games you can get from free. It wasn't pirating, but it was like, probably not good for the game company themselves. It had celeste for free, and I got it. I played basically the whole game, buy never finished some of the extra stuff. But a year or so later, when I wanted to play it again, instead of just opening it on computer, I decided to buy the game on switch to help support the developers for their awesome work.

Spyro 3 is a big one for this too! If the game detected it was pirated, Zoe the fairy would appear in the first home world and tell you your game is pirated and to expect weird behaviour from thereon out. From there, portals and the hot air balloon etc. would not always take you to the correct level, you would randomly lose gems and/or eggs from your collection forcing you to backtrack to previous levels to collect them again, and best of all, if you persevered through all of this and made it to the final boss battle, the game would suddenly warp you back to the first level with 0% progress. Genius.

I’ve heard that Spyro: Year of the Dragon has an amazing one. I can’t remember who it was, but somebody uploaded a video of them trying to beat the pirated version a while back. The game plays normally, but it keeps deleting treasure and eggs, forcing you to go back and get them over and over again to have enough to reach the Sorceress, and when you finally get enough to enter her portal after going backwards and forwards so many times, the game resets itself entirely, transporting you back to the first world and deleting everything you’ve earned. Making you go through all that trouble and then deleting it was the best thing I’d ever heard.

No Game Dev Tycoon? That has one of the most meta piracy detection responses ever, where it plays like normal to a point, then you start getting alerts about your fictional games being pirated to the point of your company going bankrupt, leading to a game over.

Fun Fact? The developers themselves uploaded the pirated version. That feature was turned into an actual "Super-Hard" mode to which you can use DRM to counter the piracy, which causes "backlash" by the players in the in-game inbox.

Gutted you didn't put Game Dev Tycoon in there. The developers of the game put the pirated copy out themselves, and it let you play it until you were several hours deep, at which point your in-game game company that you have been working so hard on would start to lose money rapidly due to people "pirating your games". Of course, people then took to forums to complain that it wasn't fair about how hard the game was, exposing themselves as a greedy pirate, and ironically proving to themselves that they shouldn't pirate things. Absolute class.

There's this one brutal piracy policy I learned of recently: Professor Layton and the Last Specter. In the US and UK versions of the games, it will try to brick your DS, and if it fails it has a backup plan to loop the first puzzle upon completion. And trying to enter london life will try to brick your DS again. However, in the JP version, it will try to brick your DS two times in a row, and then will have a warning basically saying "this is a pirated version of the game. Your DS will now shut down." And the moment you click ok it tries to brick it again

@@BenightedAlizar i had actually been in a server that was chatting about this bit of overkill antipiracy-- by bricking, the op does in fact mean bricking the console, rather than a simple crash. it's an especially nasty code and it apparently also does something with the serial number on the DSi, which would be your identifier for online services on the DSi. if i recall correctly, it would either store it and/or attempt to send it to a now defunct IP, along with injecting code that bricked the system. quite nefarious for just a little bit of piracy, and exclusive to the Japanese version from what I've heard.

@@GamerErman2001 That's a crime. Media piracy is not a crime, even though companies try to label it as "stealing". You might receive a warning, which includes forcing you to pay money, but piracy itself is no criminal act. You don't get sued for it. Stuff like selling pirated copies or sharing them can be a crime though. However that doesn't mean that you should pirate and that also doesn't mean that you get away without having to pay money if you are pirating stuff.

One of the Spyro games had a layered system. If the game detected a bad copy, none of the collectables would appear. No gems or anything. Once that was patched by pirates, it broke something else in the game. Once that was patched, something else broke, and so on. By the time pirates had fixed everything, the game would have already made its money and the devs no longer cared. Then there was Game Developer Tycoon, which had a brilliant one: For every game you produce on a pirated copy, you'll be plagued with piracy! The more costly the game, the more it gets pirated, which means you can't make any money. It's hilarious to read game help forums where the pirates outed themselves by complaining that they can't make any money because of all the pirates! lol The irony was lost on them.

@Michael Martinez The thing is, people who pirate the games most of the time wont buy the game to begin with, but if they find it good, they might buy it or tell people about the game, making it more spread to people who might buy it. the profit usually evens out or even turns out for the better, since those people wouldn't have bought the game anyway, I know it did happen to me, I pirated some games to see how they are, and I end up liking them and buying them.

I always end up buying games I've pirated as long as I enjoy them, basically if I do pirate a game, I'll end up buying a legit copy as soon as I've got the money for it, but if I don't enjoy the game it gets deleted and that's that, test run. Earthbound has a really mean anti piracy check. Understandable since it was made by the same company that made kirbys dream course. The game will crash during the final boss after your journey of several hours and then when you try to load you game back up, your save file is deleted. Yeah, during the final boss. Brutal.

One of my favorite anti-piracy measures is in Game Dev Tycoon The creator of the game literally released a pirated version of his own game, the day after the legit game launched, and uploaded it to as many torrents site as he could The game would play normally for a while, until suddenly you would start getting messages that your games are being pirated, and your profits are dropping It starts off slow, but progressively gets worse, until it becomes impossible to make a profit and you lose There were actual forum posts about people asking if there were things like DRM or other anti-piracy measures that they could research, it was hilarious

If I was a game dev, I’d probably make a “Did you pirate this game? with a yes or no question. If they said no, the game would crash, if they said yes, I’d make a short message about not pirating, allowing them to play for at least 30 minutes.

What I would do is have a password screen with a note saying to write an essay of at least 1000 words on why piracy is bad and send it to a given email address, at which time you would be given a password to allow you to continue

Spyro has a brutal anti copy measure... It gets worse and worse untill it's unplayable. Gems vanish. eggs vanish. Crashes. Health loss and it finally it wipes your progress clean! All over the course of hours ... At first sneaky and you might don't notice and suddenly you get punched into the guts until you can't get up anymore. lol. Brilliant.

The last one shown was pretty heartwarming. He wasn’t mad at us about pirating the game because he has done it before, and tells us that we should support the game another way if we can’t afford it. This is something really only indie gamers do, and I’m proud of them for doing that. Anti piracy screens or easter eggs don’t have to be scary, you just gotta them know they pirated the game.

Eric Whitney Indie games don’t often do demos and sometimes it’s only after completing the game you feel compelled to buy it. I few examples I can think right off the top of my head is Katana Zero, Va-11 Hall-A and Stardew Valley. They are all great games and I felt especially bad when I learnt that games like that are generally made by only a few people or even at times a single person.

Trydodis True, but indie games are also usually so short there’s no way to really make a demo unless they’re going to enforce a time limit. What annoys me are that they’re so short, I find it hard to spend like $30 on a game that’s only a few hours long. I don’t even like spending that much at the theater.

Earthbound's Anti-Piracy: ok so imagine Kirby's Dream Course's anti-piracy, but on steroids. After you've passed all the previous checks but the game still detects it is being pirated, then while you can still play the game, it is _insultingly_ hard. You can even get to the final boss, but when you do...that's when the game-erasing crash hits.

Spyro 3 did the same thing only an NPC actually warns you that you're playing a pirated version. The game can still be played but some of the collectibles will randomly disappear and progress can be halted at some points. But if you managed to get to the final boss you'll get kicked back to the start at 0% before you even land a hit.

I would much rather calmly tell someone that piracy is illegal and inform them that what they did was wrong, as opposed to fuck with them for hours on end before hitting them with a jump scare. I think if you do this in a more chill way, it'll get people to want to buy the game. If you scare them, you'll prevent them from getting illegal copies, but you'll also probably scare the customer away for a long time, or possibly forever.

@@nh8489 thats the thing. They aren't the customer. You seem to think pirates care about supporting. They know what they are doing. Pirates arent little kids that dont know what they are doing. Most are teens/young adults that actively look for ways to illegaly purchase games. They are not going to buy your product. And kindly asking them to is going to help. They will simply find another way to pirate your game. Instead fucking with them making them frustrated is the key. Also when you calmly explain it to them i hope you would atleast prevent them from playing the game

Well, true, but you also don't know if it's a kid behind the screen. If it is, not only could you scar them with a jump scare or scary imagery, but you could also put a deep seeded dislike for the franchise in them. Like for instance, if Nintendo put a terrifying antipiracy measure in a Mario game, and a 5 y/o plays it and gets scarred for life. Not only will you be fucking with someone's brain (which even though piracy is a serious crime, I don't think giving someone immense paranoia is a reasonable punishment), you will make them hate the series forever, because they'll look back to the time where they played that game and the devs terrified them with disturbing jumpscares.
