Well said!!!. my parents moved to America many many years ago. I was raised here, though I was born in India I came at the age of three. My mother always said the best thing she ever did was come here. My mother is a widow. My father passed away when my brother and were very young. In America, she raised two children on her own educated them, and now we are settled with our own families. In India, she would be considered bad luck because she is a widow, but I’m America. She considered a hero because she raised two children on her own educated them fed them, gave them a proper home, etc..

Kudos to your mom, can imagine the struggles she might have gone through to raise her family all by herself in a foreign land. Yes India during those days was pretty regressive hopefully things have gotten better with time.

Awesome video. I have been in the US for 16 years and these are things I love about American culture as well. Very well put together. Thank you for the efforts. Few examples I want to share: 1. About kids working - I have seen middle school kids take care of pets while the pets family is out and go to their house twice a day to feed the pet, take them out for poop and pee and play with the pet to cheer them up. And when kids do this they plan this all by themselves by creating notices to communicate about their service, the pay, they find customers in the community. 2. My 6 year old son has learnt from school that certain words which are common back in India like stupid, shit, heck all are bad words and they remind and don’t look pleased if any elders by mistakenly uses them. So heartening to see our kids teaching us. It is never late to learn. I am sorry I didn’t want to type those words here but there was no other way I could think of to communicate my point 😂 3. Another example is everyone on the table at a restaurant gets a menu and choice to order their own food. Growing up in India food was always decided and ordered by the dad in the house. 4. I think one of the main reason why American women command so much equality is also because they are financially independent which is so important for women. The concept of why does the woman need to earn if the man is earning enough in some of the Indian homes makes the woman having to stretch her handout for money everytime she needs it. It is not like spending one’s own hard earned money. 5. Holding the elevator door, other doors as a courtesy 6. Respect for pets - I am not a pet person but I still feel good seeing the respect they get 7. People sleep early by 8 pm/9 pm and wake up early by 4 am/5am and start office by 8 am, finish office by 4 pm/5pm. This keeps them healthy. 8. They give almost importance to everyone’s time. Doctor appointments, restaurant wait times are all accurate. Also with all these good things if someone asks why are divorce rates high here it could be because women have the power to make decisions, society and family supports her decision if she wants a divorce. They are more practical and don’t want to remain in an unhappy marriage only because they have kids. And as you said there are many families here you don’t divorce but it’s mostly negative numbers that are highlighted. So heartening to hear that your son appreciates when he is given food. I could understand your feelings ❤❤

@@WhatsUrHomeStoryMalayalam one other point I remember now is - body shaming is not a norm here. In India before people greet you the first comment they will say is ‘thadi vachu allo’ or ‘shenichu poyi allo’. No one asks first how are you doing?. So much so that I had a malayalee neighbor visit me once for the first time and she saw my 4 year old son for the very first time and said ‘enthu shenichu annu irikyanne, onnum kazhikyan kodukarillye!’. I am stumped at how to respond to such things even now

Hi Vidya.. Im a teacher, a regular viewer of ur vlogs. Iam a native of kozhikkode dt. I've been to US twice to visit my sister in LA. You know, im totally in love with that country. Ive seen and experienced all that you've said mainly appreciation, work habits, husband wife relation etc etc.. We cant imagine all these in our country especially in kerala. We keralites are very much ego driven and I've felt many a times that most people are like frogs in an empty well. Simply wasting time peeping into lives of others. When I go on praising US culture to my collegues and relatives they just raise their eyebrows.. Lucky that you live there. Hope my next generation gets a chance to live there.. Hi Vidya, great content... really appreciate the thoughts and efforts. I would like to add few more - 1. value for time be it anyone's. 2. being able to accept someone NO wholeheartedly and respect the NO( here YES is a yes and NO is a no, they mean what they say). 3. being able to appreciate some one's individual space/opinion/ dislikes/likes. 4. Treating kids as kids and adults as adults , be it their own or others. 5. Being able to find happiness own their own without depending on spouse/ kids. 6. Respecting own and others body.7. being able to accept a person's idea without being much biased about their attire/gender/ethnicity/what ever. basically being able to respect an individual( this might be different in different states or places but a general teaching to respect another person and treat them equally does exist) I can go on and on..

Very informative and I have experienced the same. I also wanted to add may be controversial. I go to an American church and I am involved with them on a personal level and one thing I appreciate is that, they treat their adult children with a lot of respect. I feel Indian parents treat their children as kids at age 60 too. They struggle with the change of dynamics as the kids become adults. I have seen this in many different families.

The safety of driving at night any time where I live I appreciate that another thing I noticed our children grown up here most are very honest to their parents. If they don’t like they will tell us .Not pretending to please others.

Regarding compliments, I have been to different places in a saree and have always , always got compliments from people here but only got stared at or frowned upon by another Indian . 😆

Aww, that’s so sad. I think as a culture we are overtly critical of others. Another good thing that we all should learn from here is, “If you have nothing good to say don’t say anything.” I’m tired of explaining this to people back home where they think they are entitled to voice their opinion good or bad. 😀

If kids don't say thankyou or sorry, elders will say where is the Magic word...:). I have heard this parents saying to kids. Another few things I like is they will treat everyone as same, not based on what you do for living, how big is your house, what car are you driving etc. Another thing I love is they will never ask about your personal matters.

Yes, totally agree. I got a small taste of this in India when I attended St. Teresa’s college in Kochi for a couple of months. Kids and teachers there are like people here, they dish out compliments to strangers passing by. I was super shocked initially and didn’t know what to think of it or how to respond. 😀

Your are absolutely right in your view points. I 100% agree. One more thing I feel Americans do right is they offer you help without you requesting. For instance if they see you coming with loads of stuff in your hand they come running to open the door for you. You feel guilty and walk fast or run they will tell you “don’t rush take your time”

Totally, they instill good behavior in kids from the get go. Kids friends who come over ask if they can help with putting away dishes etc. I also love the way they make kids clean up the toys in someone else’s house after the party before they leave. We were very particular about this with our little ones.

There was an orientation session to all the kids in my little ones class right before the day a special child joined them. I like the way there are inclusions in this culture for disabled ones, people from other ethnicities and color. Not sure if it is so in the high school and among the grownups.
