Good video! Some notes, as I've done this swap on my '95. Regarding the serial numbers: The "F" first character actually refers to the decade (1990s). Ford used this scheme for quite some time, with parts from the '70s starting with "D" and parts from the '80s starting with "E" (hence, why the Twin-I-Beam axle part numbers for the 2wd trucks is still E7 in the '90s-they used the same part from the 1987 revision). The '60s should be "C," not sure if the '50s and earlier did it as well. So, F2 is 1992. E2 would be 1982. D2 would be 1972. Regarding Point 7 (the speedometer/odometer swap): In addition to the odometer, the PSOM (speedometer module) contains all the gearing, axle, and tire information for that truck. If you had the notion of trying to cheat on your mileage, your speedometer will be hosed up because of the differing programming in the PSOM. For manual trucks, the PRND21 display is just a blacked-out panel, and that whole PRND21 assembly can be removed by way of a couple of screws. Final note: Be careful when handling the cluster. Beyond the stickers warning against flipping it certain ways, the actual black pieces that contain the displays are plastic sheets that are glued onto a backing that's integral to the actual componentry of that piece of the cluster. If you are unlucky (as I was), that glue will fail with rough handling. The result is that the display piece will a) fall down and jam the needles from moving, and b) result in the marks not being aligned with the sweep of the needle. I had to pull my cluster and glue down the display sheet for the gas/battery gauge piece because the voltmeter was jammed and the needle for the gas gauge pointed at the wrong angle in relation to the mark.

Hey this is done good information man! Thanks for sharing! I like the extra info about the lettering scheme for the parts. That’s good to know. If I had the correct year cluster, I would still have swapped the PSOM. But now it seems like more of a must. Makes me wonder how many guys are having problems after the swap Clusters without knowing that information. It’s funny you should say that. The PRND21 was coming unglued from that 92 cluster. I pulled it out, re glued it, and (since it was in better condition) installed it in my 95 cluster.

Wow. Very knowledgeable. Looking for some help. I have a 1994 F350 that was originally a gas auto. I swapped a 12 valve and ZF5 in her. Buttoning up some things to make her perfect. I’d like the fuel gauge to have diesel, not gas written. I’d like to have a tach as well. What cluster should I be looking for? A 94-95 diesel XLT tach right? I’d like to do this without re pin. Otherwise it’s not worth it and I’d just go digital. Furthermore, how does the tach work? Will I need to add a tach sensor to my harmonic balancer? Or does it calculate off of the tone ring?
@alwolschleger7242
@alwolschleger7242 2 жыл бұрын
@@Rangejunkie I did not. My understanding is that the primary difference between the 92-93 and the 94-95 clusters involves the addition of the airbag light, which is why the earlier clusters don't interchange with the later ones-if the 12V path through the cluster is broken, the truck'll act like a strand of Christmas tree lights with a bulb pulled-everything downstream gets hosed, and that airbag path is part of that. Not sure what is involved to make them interchange.
@alwolschleger7242
@alwolschleger7242 2 жыл бұрын
@@AWhitingO That's what I'd say. I believe it'd swap right over, just swap your speedometer over. My understanding is that the clusters were the same whether gas or diesel, and they just plugged in the correct tach module for the application.

Stevie another solid video brother great job! The hiding of mileage is so shady and is done all the time that’s a major issue. But the biggest one not discussed is when you switch the psom always properly program it to the the right settings. You must take your tire size specs for rev per mile multiply it by 108 which is all ford 8.8 then divide it by 8000. The number you get for example say 9.40 is what you program the psom to be. If you don’t do this you will destroy your transmission because it won’t know when to shift. Also all factory psom only let reset a max 6 times after that guess what you have to buy a new psom. So word to the wise watch how much you change your tire size!

Thanks man!🤙 I agree and it definitely didn’t feel right to swap in a lower mileage tachometer (I never did swap on into my truck.) I probably need to do this since I run essentially a 31” tire. I put a 1996 f.150 cluster in my 1995 f.150 Bc I wanted an RPM gauge. What I noticed when I put the 96 cluster in my truck was that when I hooked it up and cranked it the mileage changed on the 96 cluster to the proper mileage that was on my truck automatically. I’m not sure if anyone else has had this experience, but that was mine.

Actually I think it's the trim model that determines whether or not your cluster will have a tach, not anything to do with automatic or manual transmission. The" F" on the serial number does not mean Ford. The F designates the decade 90 as in 1990 just as the E serial numbers designates 80 as in 1980 the D designates 70 as in 1970 etc. The second digit is the year. For instance a serial number starting with E8xxxxxx would indicate 1988.

@@demariojason they have different resistors on the printed circuit board on the back of the instrument cluster but from what i know and from my cousin who has worked at ford for over 30 years as a mechanic. . it is possiable it may be different for the 92-97`s. also check the resistors in the wiring harness. look and follow the wires that are on the negative side of the ignition coil follow those 2 wires up twards the fire wall and you will find a black tube with either 22K ohm and 1.8K ohm or it may be above 22K ohm but will still be a 1.8 k ohm . the 1.8k ohm goes to the tach as well

2 isn't true at least specifically. I swapped the cluster from my 96 to my 95, drove it like that for maybe a month, no issues with anything. OBD-1 vs. an OBD-II as well, still no issues. Also the tachometer comment at the beginning, its not an autos only thing. Tach was just an option like everything else. My 96 F150 has a tach, its stick. My 95 F250 doesn't have a tach, it's stick as well. Just an option. Also to my knowledge there IS a way to edit the mileage it's just tough and probably not worth the effort. Other than that, great video!

@@TheMinuteMasters It definitely would be useful to know how! I'd like to put a factory tach cluster in my truck it just sucks losing out on knowing how many miles it has. I'm sure there's a way to swap them, would just have to figure out how exactly they have the clusters built. I know the speedo part is always the same, they just change the extra gauges to fit on one side or both depending. Swapping the clusters, I would guess it's pretty much just luck like you said, I did see some people saying they had issues after a swap, appreciate the response! Have a good one.

But the cluster that came out of it says F4 which would suggest 1994 (must have been an early '95 production model I guess?) So anyway after seeing this I'm guessing the cluster I got won't work in my '96? I keep getting different answers...

@@matthewmurray5168 Really? Yes those years should be compatible. I don’t know much about the pinning process. However, my general understanding is the two large harness plugs for the cluster don’t pair well. Basically, if there are 8 wires feeding one of those plugs, one or two are off. To re-pin I would think you would pull one of the wires back through the plug and reinstall it in another slot. To do this you have to understand what each wire in the plug corresponds to. Then you’d have to figure out what each copper tab in the slot on the back of the cluster corresponds to. Then it’s just a matter of making sure each wire lines up with each copper tab. It sounds like a laborious process but I’m sure someone has a write up on how to do it.

Ok. I completed the replacement of my console with a TAC from an 1995. I had another issue that popped up before the change. The odometer and speedometer had stopped working for some reason. I said well, I was going to replace it anyway. So, I replaced the console and the odometer and speedometer is still not working. So, let me think.. it had to be simple, so I checked the fuses and found that fuse in position 18 "10 amp" was blown. I replaced the fuse and the console worked briefly (2 seconds) then it blew. I did some more research and saw that it could be the Air Bag Control Module. I looked on KZbin, but I cannot locate where this module is located. Do you know?

That’s a good question. I’d buy a Haynes Manual for this year of trucks and look in the back section. There are circuit diagrams. @@TheMinuteMasters They were very helpful. They provided me the schematics. I did a test by removing the two connectors on the Air Bag Module and replaced the blown fuse to see if it blows when I turn the key on. It did not blow. I replaced the Air Bag Module with one I had located (hard to locate one). The fuse #18 did not blow plus the PSOM is working. This also corrected my erratic transmission shifting, which I heard a bad PSOM can do this (replaced PSOM, I upgraded from a 95 F150 with a TAC). Plus my Air Bag light does not blink anymore.
