I have tried 6 weeks to 12 weeks starting tomato plants early, keep notes and found that no more than 6 weeks before they go to warm soil definitely gives a healthier plant. I even noticed that early blight is less on the 6 week started tomato plants. I am in zone 6, central Missouri and I don't plant them outside till about mother's day now. I still have first tomatoes by early July. So, I 100% agree with you, no more than 6 weeks and most WARM soil!! Good video, Gary!

Thanks for the input. I am going to focus on educating people on 6 weeks for tomatoes. My theory is the roots establish better and faster, when put it warm soil, and this helps for great growth and disease resistance. Cheers.

I’m going to start my cherry tomatoes in a couple months
@jaytoney30072 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed the video. I am anticipating growing 90 pepper starts in February followed by 18 tomato starts, then eight cucumbers. Everything else will be direct sown. First, I have to erect a small 10x12 polytunnel greenhouse, and order Albion Strawberry plants from my GreenStalk tower. Freezing weather is coming, forecasted into the low teens. Some plants will die, most will live, and it will test the low tunnel protection. As of now, everything in my garden is thriving. Japanese Giant Red Mustard, Komatsuna, Tatsoi, Baby Boc Choy, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, Swiss Chard, Yod Fah, Golden Sweet Snow Peas, Malaga Radish Giant, Red Radish, Purple Top Turnips, Tokinashi Turnips, Chijimisai, Tokyo Bekana Mustard, lettuce, and endive, all ready to harvest.

Last year I had the cover on my indoor greenhouse so the warmth made my squash plants grow so fast I found out I can start those way later. I had to take them out in less then 2 weeks and on the window table they started flowering a week later but it was still cold outside. I've purchased a pop over greenhouse for next season so they can go outside sooner if needed. Chicago will always be tricky but I'm ready for it. I have sheets of foam to insulate it.

Completely agree on starting tomatoes later. Last year my tomatoplants got fed fermented plant juice (FPJ) from.nettle and were faster growing than expected. Next year I will try starting them 4 weeks before planting.

My seed starts we’re started in early Feb. I am at about 6 weeks but our temps are still in the mid 30’s to mid to high 40’s at night. To cold for my transplants. We are usually in the 50’s at night this time of year. How long can I keep them under lights inside. I have potted up once and about to do it again. Thanks for all your great info.
