Love the channel Gary!!! You have inspired me to try my hand at gardening this year. Started 11/20, my bell pepper plants look sooo miserable. They are only about 2-3 inches tall and just now got their 3rd set of leaves. From the look of your peppers in this video I feel like I’m doing something wrong. 😢 Zone 9b, started them in doors for germination, transferred outdoors about 2 weeks ago into a green stalk vertical grower.

Hi John. Peppers need to be warm, and they are hungry and thirsty plants. Hungry means they need nutrients, in the form of appropriate fertilizers. Thirsty is, of course, water. When you planted outdoors, what kind of soil did you put into your GreenStalk? Did you use potting soil (it's the way to go). Did you add any perlite or peat moss? Gary has videos about making your own potting soil blend if buying bags of potting soil is more than you'd like to spend. Remember that there is a difference between potting soil and garden soil. Garden soil is usually something you'd use for in-ground gardens. Peppers also need lots of sun and need to be warm. Even in your zone 9b, you've had some cold-snap weather, yes? That can slow growth temporarily or permanently. Did you plant your peppers with enough room to grow, not too crowded? Full size bell pepper plants may need more room for roots than a GreenStalk can provide. Think five-gallon bucket for one or two plants, or those really large storage containers (like 20 gallons or larger) that you can find at Walmart. You'll have to drill holes in the bottom of any container that doesn't already have drainage holes. Regularly check your plants for pests and diseases. When asking Gary about your plants, make sure to include a description of what the plants are looking like (color too light on leaves or discolored spots, leaves folding up or down, holes in leaves, etc). Bottom line is don't give up! You can do this! Peppers are some of the easiest and most satisfying plants to grow. There are plants that may be more suited to the GreenStalk, like strawberries, mini-tomatoes, lettuces, and herbs. Also the small varieties of radishes or carrots, maybe try some green onions (scallions). Best of luck to you!

Gary, happy new year! I can really use your advice on my seed starting plans for 2023. I have an unheated garage that is steady 50° during the winter, I have all my grow lights set up, and I have two heat mats; one large enough to cover two trays the other one covers one tray, but I plan on laying cardboard on the shelf to heat four total trays in the space the way you’ve taught us in the past. I plan on starting onions from seeds first, then the rest of my crops next month & march. (Zone 7A) with the heat mats and humidity dome I can get the soil temp 60° plus, but I would need a space heater to get into the 70s. I have plans for a smaller indoor set up using an Aerogarden to start peppers and tomatoes and other cold sensitive varieties but my larger space is the garage. Running a heater 24/7 for the next three months may get expensive. I was hoping to germinate the plants and leave the heat matt on with hopes they will grow slowly in the 60° temperature. I’m planning on starting seeds in the garage for spring crops such as brassicas, peas and lettuces and my summer crops like zucchini & cucumbers etc in March & April, my concern is the temperature over these next key months before spring. I really appreciate any recommendations you can make.

Your setup to so straightforward, I have followed your advise and set up my grow station the same way, but it seems to not grow the same as yours. You have talked about room temperature a few times, but I was wondering what your temp and humidity runs directly under the lights. I live in high desert and wonder if that is the difference.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN

My room temps stay in the upper 60's. I dont know about the humidity but it shouldn't impact germination and growth if you are watering them and that. I use a heat mat on peppers. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN My temp drops into the 50's at night, so I set a small heater in there and see if that helps. I might just still not have the watering dialed in. It seems to take forever for the soil to dry out and algae is on top of mix.

Hi Gary, love your videos and watch them all, I am in MD zone 7 as well, Timonium to be exact. Asked in another video about garlic. I haven't planted them yet as it's really been hectic. Is it too late to plant them now? I'm planting them in a large container (a gray Tuff Box) in my yard. If it's still OK to plant is there anything special I need to do to help the plants survive? I appreciate the advice.

Not everybody has the space, or can afford to have grow lights. That would be great if you could share info about when to start them indoors without the grow light (in front of a south facing window?) I usually don't know when to start what seeds, when to move them out, etc. I know the info is out there but they are all over the place and I can't possibly watch every video on the net. I was thinking starting a channel for people like me and share the dates, progress ... so we could all learn and compare progress of our plants together (when to start o, then maybe weekly progress, then when to plant out, etc). But I think you already have everything set up so maybe you could use this idea and start a separate series on this?

I’m sure I got this info from one of his videos but I tried this last year and it worked good- cool crops only ( I only tried these and not warm weather crops). I planted my trays and placed them outside and covered them with insect netting. The germinated with outside light. I would bring the trays in the house at night. Please note they only went outside when it was at least 4 degrees CELCIUS. There were some days it would not reach this temperature until the afternoon, so that’s when I put them out. I tried this method for several trays and the plants all thrived. They were a bit slower growing than the ones I had inside but they were very hardy and there was no hardening off time. I’m assuming you could do they same for warm weather crops but the temps would need to be at least 10 degrees CELCIUS when the trays went out. Just remember they need to start germination with outside light. You would need to watch your weather forecast to get the timing right.

@@kelleyleblanc5025 All good points. I will give it a try when it gets warmer. We just had a dump of snow last night (this is the 2nd year in a row with lots of snow) and we rarely get any snow AT ALL. Global cooling I guess ...

I’ve started my tomato’s on my south facing window sill. I’d spin them quarter turn everyday. I feel like they got a little lanky and also the tops would tip towards the window. You can get 4 pack led light bulbs (green or blue box, doesn’t matter) from Walmart for like 5 bucks, a power strip (~10 bucks tops), and 4 plug to socket adapters from Home Depot (5-10 bucks total). Cut off the light bulb plastic with scissors (it helps if you heat up the scissors at first to get through the hard plastic being careful not to break the metal prongs in the middle of the led light chip). Screw them into the socket adapters, plug the adapters into the power strip, plug the power strip into the wall, and boom very cheap inexpensive grow light brighter than anything you could get for the money.

Wondering if u ever tried a neem soil drench with a growing plant. We talked about this months ago but haven't seen an update. I have some plants that I brought indoors for the winter that are covered in aphids and other things that I can't identify. I even found what I think was a cut worm in a couple plants. I've topically treated them with neem but think there's other things that must be living in the soil. I greatly value ur opinion. Thank u.

I have done it outside and inside in the past but I havent done it recently. The soil drench wont help aphids. I would go with a strong spray to be honest. 1 shot and kill them off. Please Subscribe.
