In this video i go over 8 tips to help maintain you lawn mower (John Deere) for years.
I talk about changing your oil in your lawn mower (john Deere). I talk about what type of gas i use in my small engines 91 or 93 octane. I talk about the importance of sharpening and balancing your blades. I talk about mowing your lawn 3 inches and mowing shorter does not save you time. I also talk about the importance of keeping your mower deck clean.

Don't agree with premium gas but would advise to use gas without ethanol if it is available to you. Ethanol messes up the carb if it sits over winter.

I totally agree, I use ethanol free in all my small engines, mixed gas/chain saws, etc. religiously. It's the #1 error people make that destroys their mowers and such, along with leaving gas in it over winter and then the gas gets stale/ruins carburetor. Where I'm from the ethanol free gas is already 91-93 octane.

You are correct. Do NOT use high octane fuel in this engine. The compression ratio is not nearly high enough to properly ignite the fuel.

Thank you very much for putting in the time to make these videos. I have the exact same mower you have. I am doing everything on my own (5 foot female, 125 lbs), and I am trying to figure out how to release the mower deck, move it to the side, so that I can sharpen/check the balance of the mower blade. I find your videos extremely helpful. I have read my owners manual and maintenance manual. A couple of months ago I was very lucky to find a person to come to my home and service the lawn mower. My ex boyfriend had me buy the mower three years ago, but never serviced it. Last summer, he taught me how to change the oil/filter. So, I have that one down pat. I check the oil (just like I do my car), and I have extra oil/filter/spark plug/spark plug gap on hand. Learning, but patience and persistence, I’ll get it 👍. I also clean my mower every time I use it (after it cools down and before I put it away). Thank you for the tip about using a higher octane grade of fuel, and about using the leaf blower to blow out the grass. I have been trying to get inside the deck covers to get the grass out of there. I have been using an old (unused paint brush) to sweep off the grass clippings/dust. I will have to check out your videos, as I want to learn how to clean the engine compartment. Your mower looks pristine! Thank you again sir.

I agree with Steve. I went to my local small engine repair shop and they say 90 percent of the repairs they do is because people are using the wrong gas. The ethanol gas may work for a while but eventually you will have trouble. The non ethanol gas is also called recreational gas and should be used on all lawn equipment and outboard motors. Trust me on this. I did not use it for years and paid for it in the end. Not sure why this is not more commonly known.

I have found that the use of a Non-Marring plastic scraper to clean the underside of the mower deck instead of a metal scraper will help protect the deck in the long run. Using a plastic scraper does take a bit more effort to use compared to metal but you can get real aggressive with the plastic scraper without worrying about scratching the deck paint. Harbor Freight carries a set that has lasted me for at least 3 seasons now.

Thanks for the video lots of good info. I also recommend dropping your mower deck at least once during the mowing season and once before or after the mowing season (takes about 10 minutes) and grease the spindles and lube all the other moving parts on the deck. One observation about John Deere parts (such as the tune up kit) is that they don't make it easy to find the fit for your model and the kit or specific parts. You'll end up going to several different places (or your dealer, in person) to figure out what model's parts work with what. Great video - I have a larger (1/2 acre) suburban lot too with lots of obstacles and usually average less than 24 hours per year so in place of the suggest 50 hours I'll just do that at the end or beginning of the season. Remember to check the gap of your plugs when you install new a new one (or ones if you have a two cylinder). I know you're probably paying a premium for the kit but you'll have what's suggested and don't have to worry about finding the right individual items.

everybody that says that is assuming that nobody dries the deck off afterward. That's one problem with the manual is it doesn't tell you to dry off the mower after you wash it. If you use a leaf blower or air compressor to blow off the top of the deck, and then drive it down the street a few minutes with the blades spinning to dry under the deck, you'll minimize this problem.

Cleaning is the absolute best thing you can do for your deck. The big issue with the newer (since 2000) decks is that the powder coating John Deere used is so rigid that it does not flex properly with all the vibration in these mower decks. The paint cracks and allows water/moisture to get between the metal and the paint. This is evidenced by the way the paint comes off in big pieces. With regular cleaning the 48" deck on our old 110 has lasted 50 years. We just replaced the 48" deck on a D140 after 15 years after using the same cleaning methods. The deck literally lost its paint like a snake shedding its skin. Had the new replacement deck media blasted and epoxy coated - hopefully it lasts longer than 15 years. (Please note, wear items like pulley, sheaves, spindles, belts and springs have been replaced as necessary. FWIW, each mower cuts about 4 acres of heavy, dense grass weekly. our decks get washed with the deck sprayer after every use and power washed every fall. Any missing paint is repaired each fall and the undersides are sprayed with a paraffin based protection. Our 8 foot Woods finish mower (purchased 1994) that cuts about 14 acres per week gets the same treatment sans the deck sprayers and still looks new - and with the original belt, spindles and pulleys.

I bought a John Deere at Lowe's for 1599. Around 2008 and beat the hell out of it for 14 years and never did anything to it, sold it for 425. It was still running.17.5 HP Briggs.gteat mower. Bought a Husqvarna in 2022 at Lowe's for 2999. With Kawasaki engine 23 HP , got the welded deck, much better than stamped deck. I'm glad I bought it when I did, because 2023 the price went up to 3999. Crazy! One thousand dollars more in one year.

My father in law left his L130 at my house because he has an x330 or something now that’s half spaceship. I just went through the mower deck replacing the wheels and blades and the idler pulleys. I leveled it like you said and it cuts great without scalping all the places it was. I’m thinking about having the deck sandblasted and painted. It’s missing a lot of paint but seems to have all the metal.

High Octane fuel was developed to prevent knocking in higher compression engines due to its lower volatility. Recent engines with computer management systems can compensate for different Octane rated fuels but a simple Briggs and Stratton motor can't. Yes, high Octane fuel won't hurt but the more powerful regular fuel should give slightly more power and cost less. I've had my L118 for 15yrs. Nice lawn ya got there Jim!

Real nice video, subscribed to your channel. A couple of pointers, I have a JD x350, with Kawasaki engine, it says to measure oil with dipstick unscrewed, when using wash port I put some weight on the seat and let it run whilst doing other stuff, I also use grease gun on 5 grease valves ever second mow. It’s mainly axles and around the deck. I also have a short length of hose with a funnel attached and when I finish washing the deck with water I plug the short hose in and pour about 150ml of DW40 in with blades still running. It coats the deck nicely and disperses water and I have a greasy underside of the deck and no grass stuck at all. Also makes it easier for the mower to mow as nothing sticks. A 5l wd40 can costs me about 15 euro (dollars) and lasts a season. A question I have is can I use premium high octane gasoline (we have 98 oct in Europe) vs 95 ordinary gas?

octane ratings here in the USA are calculated a bit different than down under - I think you blokes use the RON (stands for Research Octane Number) compared to us yanks up here use the (R + M)/2 in some places and a few others but RON is usually 4 or 5 units higher than what we typically list on our pumps. Don't know if the URL will come through but a good article is here: www.torquecars.com/articles/fuel-octane-ratings.php

Not 100% sure but it seems to be on a spring. When I fill the tank it makes it weigh more and the tank goes down. If I remember I can look at my mower more tomorrow.

It's important to have your mower on the driveway or other hard surface when you use the washout port. If you try to do it on your lawn then it will not work correctly.

How did you get the mower up on the stacks of wood? I do use the wash port but I really want to scrape everything off. My John Deere was picked up today to go in for service and the guy told me he doesn't clean under the deck. I'm a 67 year old lady and have to do my own yard work because I can't afford to hire anyone. I do a lot of things myself though. Should I buy two of those metal ramps to drive the mower up on then place tire chocks behind the back tires?
@DIYJIM
@DIYJIM 3 жыл бұрын
I think that would be the easiest way to do it, buy a set of metal ramps and apply the brake and block the back tires. This is how I got my mower up on the stack of wood, but buying a set of metal ramps would be the easiest. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2jbenRqqZmMjtU

Only use a 91 or 93 octane if the mower manufacturer calls for it, these are typically not high-compression engines and there will be little benefit. Higher grades do sometimes have extra detergents but those can be bought and added separately much cheaper.

don't know either but it could be that most small engine guys/gals would say that the quality and amount of additives of the premium grade fuels would lend to better / more stable performance. IMO trying to find fuel with no ethanol would be better especially if you don't go through it within a few months...
