Great video, excellent mechanical work and video quality is super! Can't wait to see you do the transmission service. I appreciate you explaining the why for the different steps. I have a John Deere RX95 rear engine mower (1988 model with 1250 hours). It's definitely worth the effort to take care of your machine.

I am really impressed with your "clean" approach to something messy like this. I am like you. I love to have my things spotless. Most people who deal with oil and grease, just do not care. I am talking "professionals". Many times their sloppy and messy work ethics generates other problems! I found your video useful and very informative. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

My Snapper came with a clear piece of tubing to attach to the oil drain outlet when changing the oil. It makes it easy to drain directly into a container for disposal.

That’s a clean JD for 250hrs on it. Nice!!! Quick question, can I use lithium grease on the steering column instead of bearing grease?
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, any decent grease will work, including lithium.

With a John Deere riding mower (very similar to yours here), do you know what might cause oil to leak and the unit onto the frame and muffler, causing it to smoke? I clean up what oil I can see and it seems to stop smoking until after I finish mowing. There's also a thick coagulation of oil in the muffler protector area... I'm thinking a bad gasket somewhere. Thanks for taking the time to record and upload this! Time to make myself a checklist and keep our mower(s) in tip top shape :D

Valve cover perhaps? Head gaskets on these things are also a known weak spot.

My elder neighbor has gotten to the point she cant sit her mower anymore so after I tired of looking at her 4ft tall grass (weeds) I volunteered to cut it for her using her Husq rider. She told me she had the mower serviced just before she parked it so I was feeling good it had fresh oil & hoped they sharpened her blade too. After I cut her place and was doing some yardwork for her towing my yard cart behind her rider it occurred to me : Her mower sat in her garage for about 3 years before I rolled it out and used it. SO, that oil, altho new, is 3 years old. I gotta change her oil before I use it again. !

How often do you need to change the oil? Can I just do while winterizing it or recommend a different time?
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun Жыл бұрын
Best advice is to follow the oil change hour/time interval in your owners manual because they vary. This specific once calls for oil changes every 25 hours of engine operation.

Instead of taking the rear end all apart, why not tap in a inlet and an outlet to fill the transmission fluid?
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun Жыл бұрын
Your call if you wish to tap in drain plugs; the upper vent plug can be used for filling so no need to drill and tap a filler hole. Personally I like taking the cover off to inspect the unit and clean the gunk out of the filter & particle magnet but to each their own.

Good morning Michael. There is an excellent video by Taryl Fixes All, kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5rOeKRooJmcgKs. Like John mentions, inside the casing is one additional disc magnet and a round filter that won't be serviced if you just drain and fill. Although his video shows how to add inlets, many suggest don't bother, as doing so again, won't address the magnet and filter inside. So, IMO, doing as John recommends is the best method, although obviously some effort involved in removal, etc.

I have 170hrs on my MTD & 525hrs on my John Deere and have been religiously changing the oil & filter every 25hrs as the bible instructs. I happen to be perusing the service instructions for one or the other when I noticed it said 'CHG FILTER EVER 100hrs'. WHAT!?!?! I've been throwing away filters every 25hrs putting in good WIX filters. Well, that stops NOW! !

I bought a maintenance kit from local John deere, $38.00 , oil, oil filter, fuel filter, spark plug and air filter, and sock for air filter. Probably still would've been less expensive buying from auto parts store?
