Write the integer value of the terms and then multiply those values. Use the order of precedence. Exponentiation and roots before multiplication.

Just as there are two square roots of nine, there are three cube roots of eight. Two of the answers are real: twelve and negative twelve. The other four answers also have magnitude twelve in the complex plane.

There are two possible solutions, 12 and -12 since 9^(1/2) can be 3 or -3. If it had instead been 8^(2/3) x 27^(1/3) you would have had a unique real answer.

@@DH-jt1bw I was wrong to single out Kentucky... It is as 21st century as anywhere. Maybe I should have used "Bug Tussel" of the Beverly Hillbillies. I was having a difficult day when reading, "8 to the 2/3," and just reacted wrongly. However, I would have preferred to read, "8 to the 2/3rds POWER." My apologies to EVERYONE!

As an electronic technician I never used algebra but I needed it to pass FCC license tests (which I passed up to a first class license to operate a television station). As far as repairing televisions and other equipment I never needed anything but basic math. I love doing these math problems just for fun even though I'm retired now.

Why not just say the cubed root of 8 squared by the square root of 9. That is how 8^2/3 . 9^1/2 reads as script. The explanation was rather incoherent. 8 squared is 64. the cubed root of 64 is 4. The square root of 9 is 3. 3 times 4 equals 12. 11 year olds can solve this sort of problem easily. There is nothing complicated about mathematics, it is just a language. Like all all languages, you have to learn its syntax and vocabulary. When I was young you got a BA in mathematics rather than a BSc reflecting that Mathematics was considered one of the humanities as it uses inductive and deductive proofs rather than scientific method.
