Greetings. We do have the algebraic skills to solve the expression. M^1/2÷M^1/2-1 can be rewritten as M^1/2×(M^1/2+1)÷(M^1/2-1) times (M^1/2+1), and the numerator is (M^1/2)^2 +(M^1/2)×1=M^2/2+M^1/2= M+M^1/2. Moving forward, the denominator is the difference of two squares in the form a^2-b^2. Therefore, (M^1/2-1)(M^1/2+1) = (M^1/2)^2 -1^2=M^2/2-1. Now, all that is left for us to do is to divide the numerator by the denominator. That is (M+M^1/2)÷ M-1. Aside from the difference of squares rule, (M^1/2-1)(M^1/2+1)= (M^1/2)^2-M^1/2+M^1/2+(-1)(1)= M^2/2 -1+ (M^1/2-M^1/2)=M-1 (M

Knowing about the conjugate and its use is nice and all that, but exactly how is the transformed expression appreciably better than the original? You still have a radical in the expression. If this was a Real World calculation, for any given m you would need to find the square root of m in either case.

This never does get simplified. I multiplied by root of M/root of M and ended up with M/M-root of M. No better than the original equation. Where do you find the square root sign on a key board?

Love it. I used to get frustrated when the material went over my head and all I hear is bla blah blah. Now all I think is I'm going to laugh at this later in my math journey.

Why doesn't the m in the numerator and the m in the denominator of your solution cancel each other out?
@user-ky5dy5hl4d
@user-ky5dy5hl4d 8 ай бұрын
Because you have addition in numerator and subtraction in denominator. You could cancel m in both of them if you had multiplications in numerator and denominator. So, you cannot cancel out m in the solution. Ex. with numbers: 5+4/5-3 = 9/2. If you canceled 2 in numerator and denominator it is a different number and you would have 4/-3 which is -4/3. Completely different solution.

Why is it better to divide an irational by a rational than the other way around? Is one over pi unacceptable answer?
@afre3398
@afre3398 8 ай бұрын
It is an old relic from the slide ruler days. As you wanted to not have a irrational denominator. But in the days of modern calculators it does not matter much if you give the answer as presented first or the answer as (m-1) in the denominator. However algebra is the skill of doing math with no calculator at hand. It is symbolic math And that is important also. As an example. If you say in a 45 degree right triangle: The ratio of a side compared to the hypothesis is .707. It not wrong per se. But you introduce rounding errors The more correct value would be 1(srq(2))

This equation has 2 unknowns, let's say m and x.. You cannot really do anything meaningful without a second equation that has an x in it.

There is NO answer. SQRT(m)/(SQRT(m)-1) is an expression NOT an EQUATION. The best you can say about values of m is that m>0, and m 1. The process you have shown is a transformation NOT a solution.

Yes I've noticed that. Thank God his instructions are so good that it will come to us later. I've invested in the course and it's laid out so perfectly. I have a whole year to study algebra 1. I bought the 1 year course. He is the best instructor and you have to have an instructor that you can understand. You may need to find someone else. The free content is great and explained well but the course is a laid out step by step in a building process that makes sense to me. Math is a journey.

See how there's no "÷" symbol in this expression? Because, this 9th grade stuff is beyond that. Here's the thing, as you would say. Never do those type of PEMDAS questions with ghe specific "÷" symbol again.
