Americans: Australia is so scary because spiders and snakes how do you survive? Also Americans: so I went for a hike and a cougar stalked me, a wolf pack chased me up a tree and I had to pepper spray a bear. And at the end of all that some creep with a gun shot at me.

Any American would rather take their chances with an alligator, Grizzly, cougar, or hill billy with a gun. Than take on a fucking 80ft, acid spiting, web slinging Aussie death spider Cuz in America we are allowed to hike with guns to protect ourselves from our crazy wildlife and crazies with guns. Yet You Aussies can't even carry a knife large than a few inches to protect yourselves. How the hell do you all survive against your craziness?? Let it kill you?

Regarding the hiking/church story, Adirondack Mountains are connected to the Underground Railroad. Very possible the church kept them there safe, warm and fed when not on the River or walking. I wonder if they started digging a secondary escape tunnel from the room with the paintings. No one ever wants only one way out of danger. Side note: Did anyone else picture the Church from The Walking Dead season umm 2 I think? The one in the hills, middle of nowhere. Then the group heard the church bells in the distance? No? Just me then

These stories give a whole new meaning to the phrase "adventure in the great outdoors." Fall hiking trips are usually synonymous with beautiful foliage and crisp air, but these eerie accounts really put into perspective how vast and unpredictable nature can be. Huge kudos to you for sharing these chilling tales and combining them seamlessly with a touch of lightheartedness about your language learning journey with Babbel. Makes me want to pick up a new language for my next hiking trip... just in case! Stay safe out there and keep sharing more stories!

Yep, in the retail world summer is over immediately following Independence Day. Back to school shopping begins around July 5th-6th. Back to school ends immediately following labor day weekend. Then it's a holiday mashup. Big Box stores like Walmart/Target will have fall holidays in one area while Christmas is another seasonal area. They usually have everything Christmas related on the shelves by the end of September. My Walmart has Christmas all set by middle September. I love Summer so I absolutely hate seeing Christmas so early. It makes me feel like summer is already over.

In story #2, I wonder if that woman was someone who had been trafficked at some point (maybe even as a baby, all the way to adulthood). If she grew up as a trafficked captive, that could have seriously affected her mental health. Perhaps she managed to temporarily escape her captors and ended up in those woods. Perhaps that ranger was in on it somehow - that's why he was so flippant about the whe thing, and placed more emphasis on the hikers being where they were "not supposed to be" instead.

Oh man! The second to last one is tough. I really want to know what the guy saw! This is a true cliffhanger but with no follow-up expected. No next episode, no next season. We'll just never know... I guess I just need to kick back, relax, and enjoy sipping on my cigarette milk. 😂🤣

Really great stories! Creepy stories from the woods are my favorites! The church in the middle of the Adirondacks is more than likely part of the old Underground Railroad of slaves, and the weird symbols and paintings in the hidden lower room could be of their African religions the people wanted to hide from the slave owners. The Adirondacks played a significant role in the Underground Railroad. How fortunate you were to stumble across this. I'm sure investigators would want to know also.

Damn I was hoping it would be a portal to hell lol….love the history but won’t lie and say I’m just a little disappointed in the truth lol

My question is why was the underground passage in the church warm. Generally any place underground is going to have cool air, right?

Sounds almost like a priest hole, which existed during the persecution of Catholics. A secret hidden door where priests could hide, but existed in England and in 1600-1700. doesn’t explain the tunnels existence either
