Unlike paints, watercolor paper or paintbrushes, these are some of the true workhorse items that help me every day. ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. Just a… maybe thing for you… but if you did a hole punch on each your swatch cards in the middle, you can then lay over the top of each other and check thru the open hole and see colours right next to (under) each other with no distractions or white space… just another way to look at/isolate just your colours that you might not have realised anyways… 🤗 In that vein… you can also make black viewing windows like the paint swatch books do to isolate the swatch (and/or a red cellophane viewer to view tones)

I have done this as well but I make a color gradient of the color and I punch a hole in every visible color change...usually 3 holes. I use a tiny heart punch because of how tiny it is.

A good but inexpensive electric pencil sharpener, the faber-castell dust free eraser, the tombow moon zero eraser, a good rubber grip bottom metal ruler (has both imperial and metric) this lis useful as a ruler but also with a self healing cutting Matt and a craft knife to cut perfectly straight lines. Various good ink pens, brush pens and fine liners I’d say the Kuretake Bimoji and the Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen India Ink are overall the best. The India ink however reactivated with alcohol so keep that in mind when using alcohol markers. Over all the pens I listed are the most enjoyable to use, blackest, fastest drying and really can be painted over when dry with wet media (I advise allowing any and all ink to ‘set’ into the page for a bit before erasing or painting over. Typically 8 hours. Also scan/save a lineart copy before painting the original lines) Geometric templates with various sized circles being the most useful and ellipse being second in usefulness. French curves and geometric templates are Really useful if you are using any Art Nouveau, or Art Deco elements in your art in particular or comic/graphic elements. Tilted drawing board. Soft large brush to wipe away dust and eraser crumbs. A good photography light (with a diffuser) to have good lighting while making art, filming and photographing. Faber-Castel 9000 pencils particularly 2b. A good mechanical pencil. Various coloured pencils to sketch in and use overall (the Faber-Castell ‘dust-free’ erase is not dust free, why did they call it that? It is however the best eraser! It erases and and all coloured pencils! I can draw and sketch with any coloured pencil now!) and more. Also for digital iPad Pro 12.9 , Apple Pencil and Procreate and VizRef (reference organizer great to split screen with procreate And I use it when making traditional art; my iPad becomes a great reference display to use!) Art pose is also a very useful app for 3D pose models.

I have a ruler that was my fathers. He was an architect, a builder, a pilot (we did that country flight), friendly, gregarious happy individual. He fostered my love of art. There’s nothing special about the ruler except it was my dad’s. And that is special enough. I am in the middle of branding myself (per your suggestion, so thank you!), Shawna Fine Art and I work in acrylics with ail and ink, in vibrant joyful colors.

Two things that I would add to my list are: a good pencil sharpener and the storage/display boxes for my markers, so I can easily access everything that I need

For me personally a good ol' exacto blade and some sandpaper is the best way to go when sharpening, unless someone is younger then electric sharpeners are good too

I too find that the most important things in my art room are the ones that bring an immediate emotional response. Like your father's pen. What a treasure. Hi Rebecca! The aqua bronze is amazing and there's nothing else like it but it is hazardous so I would be careful to not lean in too much and breathe the dust. As long as you're not getting really up close and personal with your painting and inhaling the dust, you should be fine. Thank you so much for watching 😘

I have watched this video many times. I am so close to buying the scanner. I think it would be very helpful, the question I have is printing artwork.( gift cards, note cards) Do you send it work out to be printed, or do you have a great office printer that can do the job. How do you find amazing paper to have it printed on or to use to print yourself? I love some of my new pieces,(thank you so much). And I don’t want to give them away without copying first.

I like your story about your father's fountain pen. I use a drip pen that I have had since grade school., Grade 7 which was 65 years ago! I also use my grandfather's quill dip pens that he used to architectural drawings. Experience has taught be to be frugal so I also shop at my variety and hardware stores as well as pharmacy for my "art" supplies.

Thank you thank you thank you for tip number 3! All my sets are swatched, but lately I’ve been painting directly from the tube and I never swatched those. I have been finding it so hard both to remember what I have, and remember exactly what the colour looks like on paper. Spent 4 hours this morning swatching them out. Looking forward to planning my first painting!

@@Pointebrush I have a circular lazy Susan divided into compartments that I purchased on amazon. There are 6. They are red, yellow, green, violet, blue and turquoise. I sorted my paint by colour groups, then each group into a sandwich bag, then into the colour coded bin. That part is working well. But I can’t wait to see how you do it!

The most excess purchase I made was a 12 pack box of Prismacolor kneaded erasers.Other brands may sell in bulk, those just happened to be the ones I spotted. For some reason, I'm always losing the pieces. Now I just reach into the box for a new one. I keep that box in one spot, so that whenever I do trip across the missing pieces, I toss them in the box. I am not organized like you are 😉😊

An art tool worth discussing: transparent rulers with zero marks in the middle. Very useful to me especially as I learn to draw. You want the ones with embedded lines so the lines don't cast shadows. Or wear off. I don't think they come in metric? Metric is useless in art in any case. Millimeters are too small to see easily and centimeters are too big.

Hi Irene! What medium do you typically use? I never use any fixatives on my watercolors or gouache paintings. Soft pastels are typically the only thing I will use a fixative for and even then, I'm not always thrilled with how they change the colors. Let me know a little more about what your medium and intentions are and I can see if I can be of help!

Well, I've been wanting to protect my greeting card illustrations from smudges and the elements, etc. and I know of sprays and rub-on wax that leaves a protective layer without affecting artwork/colors. Maybe even protect from fading. I haven't used anything yet, but saw a recent review about Dorland's Wax Medium that looked promising. I was wondering what your views are on that or if you use anything. Thanks. 😊

I use Dorland’s on my watercolor and gouache paintings, cards, etc. It’s easy to use and doesn’t change colors. And makes the painted surface waterproof. I really like it.

Fountain pen......! Everyone should use a fountain pen. At school, we could not use a fountain pen until we mastered a dip pen. Being left handed it took me longer than other children but still use my Schaeffer pen to this day, I'm 70 years old now and people comment when I use it, as they have never seen a fountain pen before, it's so sad 🖊️. I can't believe it. Actually, a lot of young people don't even write any more, just text or use a computer. So sad. X

My EPSON v550 photo ICE scanner is great but recently distorts my images making them look wider or fatter. Anyone have suggestion on how to adjust? Loved the Monte Blanc pen story.

I loved your list my supplies. It gave me some really good ideas. I’m curious if you use a light table for use with your tracing paper. I have some money from a grant that I am debating about how I really use it for supplies a light table and tracing table and tracing paper was on my list but the grant wasn’t fully funded so I have to reduce the number of supplies and I am trying to be careful at my choices. I need to take care to purchase those things that won’t be most valuable in the long run.

Hi Tara Sue! Thanks for watching! I used to own a small light box but found that I never used it. I just use tracing paper without it. Sometimes, simpler means easier to set up and therefore you’re more likely to use it more often for that very reason. Definitely worth playing around with tracing paper and seeing if it’s enough before investing on a bigger piece like that! Congrats on your grant!

Have you ever taped onto a window and used natural light? 😊 It works well in normal light.

Instead of a kneaded eraser, you could just use tack. It’s slightly stiffer than a kneaded eraser so it’s easier to use.

@@Pointebrush Oh, yes! It has more body than a needed eraser, though, but its not tough; it’s still very malleable. I find kneaded erasers are just to soft for my liking.

Can artist tape be used to stick down watercolor paper and will it prevent water creeping underneath to create crisp clean borders? Thank you!

Yes it can! The trick is to make sure that you really rub it down on the edges. The bone folder I used in this video make the excellent tool to do that!

It is lovely. Thought to be honest, it’s less about the actual pen in a material sense and more about having things in your space that inspire you. For me, it’s memories of my dad via this family heirloom but it could be different for everybody 💕
