much like the Gradius entry, Heretic from id software would punish you if you tried to use the cheat codes from Doom. The 'all guns and ammo' code would take away all your weapons, and the God code would just kill you.

I'm always surprised that videos on this topic (and there have been a few) never mention Heretic - the fantasy Doom-esque that takes Doom cheat codes, but does the opposite effect.

I've seen Heretic mentioned in other lists, possibly even at WC, so it seems like a case of not always including the same example, even if it's a great one. Typing IDDQD thinking you were being smart and the game taking a huge dump on your head was at the same time shocking and hilarious.

Conker's Bad Fur Day (n64 version): Successfully entering a cheat code will result in the little demon who mans the cheat room giving a response such as "You cheating ba**ard!"...just uncensored :) No actual penalty, though.

I'm surprised Animal Crossing isn't mentioned. That also had save-scumming detection in the form of Mr. Resetti. If you reset or turn off the game without saving (perhaps because something bad happened to your town), the next time you play Resetti will pop up and give you a lecture about saving before quitting. The more you reset, the angrier he gets and he eventually threatens to delete your save!

Other examples: Theme Hospital (PC/PS1): If you type in the cheats for all tech and infinite money, your turncoat of a receptionist will publicly declare that you’re cheating. Earthworm Jim (SNES/MegaDrive): Typing in the dev Beta-test cheat code will have Jim call you a cheat. Medieval Remake (2018): Typing in the cheat code once that used to unlock all items and weapons in the original 1997 Medieval game unlocks an achievement called “Old School Sneaky”. Blood (PC): Typing any of the cheats for this game will permanently blackball your overall score for your play through. Every time you reach the end of level stats you won’t receive a level rating. Instead you just get the bold, blunt words: YOU CHEATED!

Descent 1 and 2 both jump to mind about mocking you for cheating. Everytime you enter a cheat the announcer says "cheater" and your score is set to 0 for the rest of that play through. Also when you normally would score points instead of giving showing your points for the last robot kill it has a dialog that says "CHEATER!" instead. Descent 2 also mocked players by changing the gabbagabbahey cheat from the enabling cheating on Descent 1, to instantly setting your shields and energy to 1 while still calling you a cheater and setting your score to 0.

I remember the "it is a good day to die" cheat in warcraft 2 would make all your stuff indestructable and one shot everything, but the draw back si any of the magic users could instant kill any of your stuff.

I'll always remember my first experience with dev trolling. I had some 4x4 truck Racer type game for the ps2 where if you entered a code to spawn more money the text would literally say "congratulations cheater" at the end of the confirmation message.

How about "8 Allies Who Become Enemies." These would be allies who fight alongside you and then eventually fight you directly. Shinon, from Fire Emblem : Path of Radiance is 1 example (although you could do the list from just Fire Emblem alone) or in Mass Effect 3, if you don't help some allies in time they become corrupted by the Reapers and are turned into special enemy units.

Codename Iceman does something not entirely unlike Jade Empire: there's a dice minigame that you need to win to earn a key item. If you save and restore during the minigame, your opponent will snark about it. Do it three times and he'll refuse to play and leave... taking the key item with him. You will never see him or the item again.

For The Longing, they should honestly add in a second true ending for those who put in the time to make it to the end. You can see staircases in the background behind the King. The Shade should be allowed the choice to leave, instead of stay, and get the Well Bucket ending as a result, but genuinely earned.

Cheat codes are sometimes necessary, because not everyone is a super-intense-all-skilled-powerful player. I would never have gotten through Contra without the Konami Code. The first two (at least) Command and Conquer games didn't have cheat codes, which means I would get to one level that I Could. Not. Complete, and the rest of the game was lost to me. No gameplay, no story, just endless frustration. (I never bought the rest of the series, because why would I?) Star Craft, on the other hand, did allow cheats, so I was able to try each level a few times and only cheat if I had to in order to complete the story.
