Join the club. The Rumour in uk used to Vandoren put 9 did reeds in a box and send them to us and might let us have 1 good or decent one. Then as I traveled I found my friends in USA used to say the same thing. I was in the French clarinet players used to say they leave us one decent one and send all the good ones to the USA. Of course all of that is an urban myths humidity it’s got nothing to do with a Van Doren product! It’s an Urban myth! Packaging has improved the reeds. Vandoren put much work into their products. I’m sorry to say Simon old man all of this rich stuff is all part of the territory if you follow this lady teacher listen to her she’s very good and take her guidance God bless you . happy Clarinet playing - Bill. Our bodies change over time - just through natural processes and with the amount and type of playing we're doing - so what suited us 6 months ago might not suit us in 6 months time. A bit of basic mouthpiece care doesn't hurt either.

Hi Cally, Found your channel yesterday and really love your videos. I played in middle school and have decided to start playing again. I picked up a used Jupiter for a real deal but the mouthpiece is cracked. Staying under a $50-$60 budget, could you recommend a good mouthpiece for a beginner?

Hmm, I think if you can get a Vandoren 5RV Lyre that would be best, but the Fobes Debut isn’t too bad (you’ll probably grow out of that quickly though, lol)

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do you "try out a mouthpiece" without spending the significant $ to purchase it? My understanding is mouthpieces are not returnable? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Some online retailers will let you trial mouthpieces and just charge a restocking fee when you send them back (as long as you don't damage them). You can sometimes visit a shop and test mouthpieces in person. In Chicago Vandoren has a "Musician's Advisory Studio" where people can set up mouthpiece testing appointments.

Hi Cally. I’m mostly a bass Clairinet player but I’ve been struggling with reeds and ligatures lately. Any time I play leap or in upper clarion I squeak a lot. I ruled out the mouth peice because I got a new one a few months ago but could that still be the problem? I was convinced it was the ligature because when I switch out the ligature to the basic 2 screw Model ,it helps.

It's probably not the mouthpiece if it is only 2 months old. The ligature can make a big difference in response. When I switched to the Vandoren leather ligature it helped me out a lot! What kind are you using?

Do you keep two of the same mouthpieces or another model ready to go? This may ward against emerge y stuff or if models change…Sort of like folks do with two models of tennis shoes. I figure you have quite few Vandoren models in your collection to go to in case of emergency. Right now I have an M13 lyre as my primary and a BD 5 as backup with many other Vandoren flavors ready at a moments notice… but I don’t play at nearly the same level of scrutiny as you may have need😅

@@ducktapefashions If it‘s a problem with a ligature you can find out if you just replace the ligature with a ligature wax band (about 5$) - they make about the best sound if bound properly and can help a lot evaluating a ligature or ligature problems

Hello Cally!! I'm new to your channel. I have an important questions that I've been asking around including my band members and on random websites(haven't responded and I'm getting really impatient because we might have to play anthems right as school starts) I accidentally, irresponsibly dropped my clarinet and it falls right on it's mouthpiece. There's not a chip, but a bent on the tip and small holes between the rubber sticker. I tried blowing and it's only making airy sound... My reed was also bent, but I think the mouthpiece is a bigger problem. My band members doubt that it has to be changed, I don't know if I should really buy a new mouthpiece :(( My town doesn't sell or repair clarinet. I tried searching for stores around Malaysia but couldn't find any. What should I do, I really don't want to confront my band teacher because I've made the mistake of losing my instrument before 😭😭

Sorry to hear about your problem! If the mouthpiece is damaged you need a new one. If your reed is damaged too, first try a new reed. Good luck!

@@callyclarinet okay :( is there a trustworthy websites you knew of that sells clarinet parts? My Bb Clarinet comes from ammoon brand and I need the shipping to be as fast as possible, but I can't find any ammoon clarinets. I wanted to buy the yamaha mouthpiece but the seller said they're not sure if yamaha is would work with ammoon clarinet

I don't know that brand of clarinet but if it's a standard French system clarinet, any mouthpiece designed for that kind of clarinet should work, like Vandoren or D'addario or Yamaha or Selmer (stock mouthpieces are usually bad anyway, almost no one should be playing on the mouthpiece that comes with their clarinet). Tuning might be a little different so just check it with a tuner to make sure it is not wildly flat or sharp.
