Another helpful video. When last I considered bench work L girder construction with 1x3 pine was the standard approach. Using plywood, watching how you design modules, and maximizing surface area of the plywood has answered a lot of questions about how I'm going to approach my next layout. Thanks!

Due to Popular demand, I will be making the track plan, parts list and 1:1 prints available for this layout at some point. The example in the video was drawn with Märklin track so I will need to redraw it with Atlas before I can release it. Also for those curious, the project cost for this layout was around $5000. Yes I'm happy to build you a copy or a modified copy. please visit my website for details. www.modelrailroabenchwork.com

Genuinely it's really only the tools made in the last 15-20 years that are really junk leaving the store. Stuff made prior to that really does hold up regardless of manufacture.

@MRBenchwork

I totally get that. For my clients it's either a time issue or a ability/ lack of tools issue. Basically my service helps them skip most, if not all, of the woodwork so they can get to the track, scenery and hundreds of other projects that go into a model railroad. I realize it's not for everyone but if nothing else hopefully my videos serve as a source of inspiration or ideas for those who do wish to take on the benchwork task themselves.

I have a 10 x11 space that I will be using for an HO layout. I like your 8x13 layout but my space is too small for it. Could this design be reduced to work in my space?
@MRBenchwork
@MRBenchwork 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidboyd6463 Truthfully, Maybe, but unlikely unless you are going to go to N scale. This layout in particular is based on a 12 x 20 HO layout so it's already squeezed as much as is practical. Honestly it would really depend on your room's access point as to the feasibility.

Watching this series convinced me to subscribe and RING THE BELL. Love your efficiency of material use. Quick question: Have you ever or heard of using WING NUTS and Machine screws to join benchwork modules? If so, how would you do it? My RxR Club has a problem. Each Christmas and Spring/Summer seasons we take our portable module layout for STEAM Educational demonstrations. Repeatedly using wood screws to dismantle and reassembly the table units has resulted in benchwork getting chewed away. So what do you think of WING NUTS, or am I just a wing nut? ~Jim

I love your question and I'm going to make a video on this, but in the mean time, Yes bolts are 10000% better than using screws to secure together temporary layouts. The trick is to use bolts that are not threaded the full length. Typically these will be 5/16's or larger varieties and you may have to get bolts than are longer than necessary to get a bolt with an unthreaded section of 1 to 1 1/4 inches. The idea here is that the unthreaded part of the bolt acts like an alignment pin. Keep in mind that I said bolt, not machine screws. Hex bolts make assembly and disassembly faster as you can use a cordless tool to install them if desired and there's more to grab ahold of if something gets stuck. All that said, when I was setting up temporary layouts 6-12 times a year for shows my group found that C clamps were more than sufficient to hold the layout together and it made "fine tuning" the layout much much easier.

Thank you for your reply and suggestions on a layout that could fit in my space. I’d like to ask your recommendation on the smallest radius I should use to keep the curves looking as realistic as possible. I am modeling the 60’s so my locos and cars are smaller. Thanks in advance for your help, David
@MRBenchwork
@MRBenchwork 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidboyd6463 The largest radius you can fit is the real answer but if you can shoot for a minimum 22" you should be good for most things that are not excessively long like passenger cars, auto racks and such. That said, Pretty much anything made these days will run on an 18" radius but it will look weird and not be 100% reliable if it's much more than 40ft box cars pulled with a 4 wheel diesel loco.

Some people create their elevations on top of flat benchwork with foam. You create your elevations with the benchwork. Is creating benchwork elevations your recommendation over using foam on top of flat benchwork?

One thing of utmost importance, you are in a closed place, no matter how ventilated it is I saw the wood saw dust on the floor, please please wear a ventilated mask or have a device that sucks the dust so it does not get in your lung, last thing you want to have is lung fibrosis, take it from a physician, JM 2 cents, god bless.

@MRBenchwork 3 жыл бұрын
I do have dust collection, and an air filtration system but your advice is warranted. Honestly dust has been a huge battle for a very long time. I do wear a mask when cutting a lot of material and I do leave the shop specifically to let the dust settle. Keep in mind that what you see in these videos is a very edited down version of the build process and typically its time lapse because I have fans, and AC running. In most cases I'm only actually working in one to two hour increments.
