I think the bride price is seen as compensation to the bride's family for taking their daughter away from them after the family spent their resources raising the daughter. It is not fair to the bride's family to have spent all those resources on raising a girl just to give her away to a man's family for nothing in return. A son can continue to give his family resources after marriage. A daughter, however, belongs to the groom's family after marriage and can not really give anything to her family. I am not saying that I agree with everything I said above. That is how the bride price was explained to me by a Chinese woman many years ago when I lived in China.

I explained that in western culture, marriage is like a joint venture, the future marriage is paramount over everything including parents. Come to think of it, anyone who doesn’t agree their own family should come first (bride or groom) probably shouldn’t be getting married anyway. To the best of my ability, I would provide for my family, then if I could , I would try to ensure that my both our parents had housing, food, clothing and enough money to pay for medical expenses. I don't think paying for a bride price is acceptable. However, I am willing to cash out for things that are important toward a marriage. Instead of spending for a huge wedding banquet, I cashed out and went for a small wedding and used the money (from my parents) for a down payment toward a nice house (4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, newly developed). The house title and my financial accounts are in both of our names.

I have familiar problem from Vietnam. My ex girlfriend family require me money, that could compensate their son future mariage cost. That amount is ridiculous, i love her, but not that price, then i walk away. I am happy with my decision, save a fortune that hard working earned. As traditional gift, a pack of gold jewery is acceptable. The wedding party is just an occasion to introduce the couple to family members from both side, but many bride want to make it the chance to live as a queen, make it too big, too costly but they pay none percent of that. Many vietnamese girls ask too much from their mate, but give nothing on the table except Puss... what is their value? I wont buy that cheap bargain

Here in North America, son kind of experienced that situation, mother in law wants me (mother) to give my son $100,000 his inheritance even before I die so her daughter can buy a house. My son was so stressed of saving every penny he’s got, while she travel with her friends and families over the world, while he scraped penny to save.
