Yes. It amazes me that an eight year old had the composure and people skills to pull this off. Shasta also must have had an incredible will to live in order to chose the gamble of trying to talk him out of strangling her rather than just asking to be shot after that monster murdered her whole family.

Because it seems that some people don't understand how to read. I'm quoting what I've heard people say about the individuals in this topic. Pedophiles can not change. And anyone that says they can, or deserve a second chance, are just as bad. Final edit: Please stop replying to me saying you were one yourself, but changed. I do NOT care. @@AlcoholismAnonymous-xj2zo I guess they're not technically predators if they only consume stuff other pedos have made. It's still illegal tho and indicates that they potentially want to carry out these acts themselves (If you're into something like a fetish, then clearly you would enjoy doing it yourself as well). It's difficult to know what to do with these people. They're like a ticking time bomb which has a chance of not going off.

Slade dying at 13 was heartbreaking, he’s barely entered his teen years and he’s been murdered and died a slow and painful death. I’ve seen so many cases of teens being murdered and as a teen myself, it’s genuinely horrifying to know. And the young children being fed drugs and alcohol makes it so much worse, Dylan being shot and murdered at 9 years old is horrific. This entire case is disgusting. That man is a sick sick man and should have never been released after his first count of S/A. They looked like such sweet kids, Slade and Dylan looked like they could grow up to be beautiful men and that disgusting man Joseph took that away from them. He traumatised Shasta at such a young age, who would ever even think of doing something like that.

Happens all the time. People who were put in jail for having weed were still in jail serving their sentence AFTER weed was legalized where I am. Since emotional abuse and sexual abuse is something that kids don't really know how to explain and it makes it easy for offenders to get away with. Since sexual abuse has only one real way of being proven, through tests like vaginal swabs being the only clear cut evidence- It's normally word against word in court. My abuser got away without being put on a registry, having his life unaffected completely because I can no actual proof. It was only my word against his, and since the court doesn't take word as proof- I lost.

The whole situation is beyond heartbreaking. But what I also found heartbreaking is how she was in a correctional facility as a teenager relating to her drug use. It just reiterated how incredibly flawed our system is. Despite her history, her pain, her trauma, her PTSD- she was still punished for merely trying to lessen her pain. The courts aren’t trauma-informed by any means, rather than getting her the help she needed they punished her for self medicating her own trauma. I find it both incredibly disturbing & ironic that a child who was severely traumatized by the murder of her entire family + being sexually abused, was locked up in a correctional facility, meanwhile the very man who had inflicted such horrific damage upon her was released from prison (prior to) murdering her family and kidnapping her. The very system that punished her for her addiction in response to her trauma, is the same system that allowed this predator back out on the streets which ultimately resulted in what he did to her in the first place. The system created a situation in which this man victimized further children, and then punished the victim as she struggled to cope years later. She was just trying to survive the pain she was going through. Gabor Mate made a statement that I think fits here: “Addiction is not a choice that anybody makes; it's not a moral failure. What it actually is: it's a response to human suffering.” Being sober for 6 years myself now, I’m so proud of her that she was able to overcome that. She had unimaginable hurdles thrown at her at such a young age, and yet she SURVIVED in so many more ways than one ❤️ she survived what he did to her and her family, and she’s continued to survive every single day since. That’s the definition of a true survivor. Her strength is an inspiration and I hope she continues to heal & thrive.

This part is always confusing to me, because there is this version and another one in which it's not mentioned the squirrel game but she says that she was on one side of the Jeep and Duncan and Dylan on the other, so she could not see the nature of the first shot but she remembered that Duncan was apparently looking in a large transparent box for some beers and that apparently the shotgun that was also there went off. When the first shot rang out she ran over and saw Dylan screaming and begging for his life and Duncan telling Shasta that it was an accident and then what you said in the video happened. After the fatal shot Shasta remembers Duncan was crying and he told her again that he didn't mean to and he shot him again so he wouldn't feel any more pain. Maybe by that time he had grown attached to the children and truly regretted it or maybe not and it was truly on purpose (at least the first shot, even Shasta wasn't sure). It was days later that he made the ultimatum to Shasta I'm with you, I really wanted both of them to survive and I can't stand the fact that maybe (in the case it was accidental) he would have survived

Even in his last moments and all the pain he felt he still built the strength up to get back in the house and pass away next to his mom, i’m sure he was so scared, terrified. She doesn't deserve to be in the same place as her abuser: jail/prison. She has severe ptsd and trauma and used drugs to cope like many others in the world. I truly believe drugs should be decriminalized. And I also believe that people struggling with addiction need different help than jail/prison. They need a rehabilitation therapy center. I get that drugs are illegal and that it's a crime but if you look into this issue it's much deeper than that. The system views things as black and white when life in reality is more grey and inbetween. Many people with drug issues are just struggling with untreated mental health issues and a lot of their addiction can be avoided or treated in the first place with childhood trauma screenings and trauma therapy. The reason this isn't happening now except in small areas where they are doing childhood trauma screenings, is because of the prison industrial system. They make money off of putting people in jail and prison. It also makes the population easier to control. Sometimes I honestly wonder if the leaders of the u.s. secretly want all humans in the u.s. to be incarcerated. It really feels that way sometimes. She shouldn't have gone to those places. She needed to go to a mental health and trauma inpatient hospital or rehab. I swear to God things do not have to be this way and us as u.s. citizens shouldn't put up with it. People with drug offenses shouldn't be put in the same place as rapists and murderers, but they are and it's not right. We all know that. Something needs to change and change soon. What happened to her should not happen to others. It's common for victims of severe trauma to use drugs so instead of punishing them we should be working towards healing and curing them.

I don't see her time in a correctional facility as a prison. It was drug-related and it seem to have helped her to become a productive adult. However, in cases like Shasta, it is common to turn to drugs and alcohol because of PTSD (anything to numb the pain, there should be some other type of facility for one reason as being labeled as her abuser and a killer. IMO

Then he let Dylan go...when Dylan would wake up..he would wake up screaming because he was horrified at what the man had to him but also horrified that he was still alive. He clearly underwent his own trauma. A a completely evil psychopath does not feel remorse and would have strangled her in a heartbeat. He kept her alive and was easily manipulated by a child, suggesting he does harbor passion and empathy of an insecure and broken person. Most likely was abused as a child and suffered isolation from the decades of confusion. A 15 year old molesting other children clearly learned such behavior. When he took out her brother after he had successfully hunted a squirrel, it seemed like he was aware and guilty of the sexual damage he had done on the boy, and quickly took him out in a moment the boy's last thoughts was relief.

No one is thinking when they are in survival mode. Plus he just saw his little brother and sister abducted. Maybe he was using the last of his strength to save them. Bless his heart. Such a terribly, heartbreaking story.

The fact that so many people instantly recognized her is crazy too. even just someone out front nodding to her acknowledging that he knew what was going on. It's incredible to hear.

Her marrying and having kids with the man that was related to the girls that she heard stories about being murdered is crazy to me. It’s such a little detail, but it’s insane to me like the world so small or it was just fate like I wonder how she felt when she found that out

I am a grown man crying watching this tragedy. I remember this story but didn't know all the vile details. God bless you Shasta. You are a strong amazing person. Your 1000 times the person I am. I hope only great things for you.

Dude, you're a "man", and you're crying? Pussy. (I'm not serious, but there was no point to say you're a grown man, everyone already knows that both genders are, in fact, human beings with human emotions).

I hope that Shasta is doing better now. Bless her heart. Traumatic loss forever breaks something inside. I can’t imagine losing my whole family at such a young age.

The judge at the trial said he was the most evil man he had met. This story is so disturbing because he killed Shasta's family, abused Shasta, and did other horrible things. The fact that Shasta survived this shows what an amazing and smart person she is. This made me cry because of what he did to Shasta and her family.

She's so strong for this. The things that she had to go through are worse than anything I could come up with, and yet she stayed strong throughout all of that.

If they would have just left him in jail for molesting at the age of 15 💀 People should know the outcome of this you kill an animal you’re raping since you’re little you’re abusive you’re manipulating come on what’s bound to happen you’re gonna be a murderer🤦🏻‍♀️

Right! It has been proven for a while now that these peoples brains are wired different. They will NEVER change. They may, in jail. But after they will be confronted with the things they 'desire'🤢... they will do it again in the end.. They should be locked up forever, because they honestly don't have control over this shit. Just like we don't have control over who we feel atracted to. Again it has been freaking proven, so why are these people still being released on a daily basis..?

This is the strongest young person I have ever heard of. No child should EVER have to handle what a horrible situation. There is no punishment harsh enough for that monster who destroyed this innocent family. My heart breaks that lovely girl.

I'm still trying to understand why a level 3 sex offender is allowed to roam the streets freely. She should not have gone through this horror in the first place. I just hope she's able to heal totally from this nightmare the court caused her 😢

This must be worst crime I've heard of. This type of psychological torture of a child and ontop of all the violent murders it is ridiculous. What an amazing young girl, strength and intelligence.
