I think John Sullivan from the Old Spice commercial is also Nicole's boyfriend in the Van De Kamps commercial. I loved Gemco. I used to go there with my mom as a kid in the San Francisco Bay Area. That's where I bought my Cyndi Lauper She Bop 45.

I have Super Breakout, and I love the Progressive mode, when you reach certain point thresholds the wall moves down with more and more layers! That Old Spice ad voice over reminds me of those old timey newsreels! The Jack In The Box ad reminds me of the way I say NooooooooOOOOOOOooo!! I guess the Van DeKamps mexican meals never attained that "American classic" status; they needed to flop around in the freezer more! We had a similar Black Angus restaurant chain in the East: Ground ROUND

Great set!!! I forgot all about Campho Phenique. They use to have a ton of ads... I used to LOVE winchell's donuts. Especially those brownies and cheesecakes. I've heard the only one left is somewhere in San Jose. By the way, I played Breakout a few years ago on an Atari compilation I got as a gift and I found it a bit tough.

Yes, that's Dan Gilvezan in the Jack in the Box commercial. He was the voice of Bumblebee (and others) from G1 Transformers and Peter Parker from Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, among many other voice roles.

One thing I'm noticing throughout a lot of these early 80's car adds is how the American manufacturers compare themselves to foreign imports. Like from the Buick Sentry commercial in this batch. "Looks like a Mercedes." And all of the others comparing their cars to Hondas and Toyotas. It's a fascinating sign of the times. It was the beginning of the end of Detroit. American cars had a terrible reputation for being gas-guzzling clunkers and this is their response.

I still miss Van de Camp's. Along with the food being perfectly good, it's the only frozen Mexican dinners I've ever seen that came with sauce packets, including guacamole. Why has a simple thing like THAT never been popular?

Those are my faves! the quality on this particular volume is fantastic! looks like "Gemco" lady was trying to wear a wig, but didn't pull it far enough onto her forehead Diet Shasta FTW!! Lipton Cup a Soup-sodium bomb everytime I see a Jack in the Box ad, I think of the salmonella/e coli scandal f/ the 90's I thought Van de Kamp's mostly did fish

1:02--Wincell's must be a regional chain; I've never seen them in my home state of Iowa. Their baked goods sure look yummy! 1:32--I was really into the Atari 2600 back in the day. I had both the original Breakout and Super Breakout. 2:00--This must have been about the time when solid/stick deodorant began to overtake aerosols and roll-ons as the dominant format. 3:32--I love the Shasta jingle. I believe Shasta soda (or "pop", here in the Midwest) is still around, but it's hard to find in my area these days. 5:13--What ever happened to Lipton Cup-a-Soup? 5:23--I don't recall ever seeing Van de Kamp's Mexican style meals! I know them mostly for their fish, which you can still find in just about every grocery store.

There used to be a Winchell's a mile or so from my grandmother's house. I haven't been back to her old neighborhood since she passed away, but since the nearest Winchell's is now 250 miles away, I know it's still not one. I understand the desire to want an updated portrait, but to hide away the baby picture? Pre-CGI, that poor woman had to keep the same pose while holding the various cans of Shasta. Apparently, WWIII was more about preventing the war than actual fighting.
