80's Commercials Vol. 899

These commercials aired on NBC on May 24th, 1985
1. New Coke (With New Edition. This almost makes me want to try New Coke!)
2. McDonald's (She was immediately fired from her modeling gig after her next weigh-in)

5. Toyota (The actor here is Squire Fridell, who started playing Ronald McDonald in McDonald's commercials that year)
6. Great America (An amusement park in Santa Clara, California. Originally built/owned by Marriott, it was later owned by Paramount in the 90's/early 2000's and is now owned by Cedar Fair, who renamed it "California's Great America" in 2007. Despite living about an hour away, I haven't visited the park in a very long time, the last time being shortly after Cedar Fair took over. A lot of the Paramount themed rides I grew up with like Top Gun and Drop Zone had to be renamed to generic names after the Cedar Fair acquisition)
7. Miller's Outpost (When grapes start singing to you, it's time to lay off the moonshine)
8. Diet Pepsi (With Joe Montana and Dan Marino. This was a few months following Super Bowl XIX, where the Miami Dolphins lost to the San Francisco 49ers. Dan Marino would never appear in another Super Bowl)

'We weren't that smart, and we weren't that dumb', was the quote from the head of the company; there was an entire book written about this incident called "The Real Coke, the real story" I think. It was written by the Coca-Cola beat reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution-Coke's hometown newspaper. Yes of course they have a Coca-Cola beat reporter. Really good book. There is an alternative theory, somewhat more believable, that it was Coca-Cola Corporation's attempt to cover the change in flavor from allowing bottlers to start using hfcs instead of cane sugar.

I was just a kid at the time but I definitely remember trying it and thinking it tasted weird and wrong and too sweet. It kind of *was* Pepsi-like, although I also remember Pepsi being better in the 80s? Maybe that's a nostalgia filter though.

The one calorie most likely came from caramel coloring or some other additive. At some point they started marketing Diet Pepsi as containing zero calories. "In the United States, Diet Pepsi is marketed as having zero calories, as FDA guidelines categorize products with fewer than five calories per serving to be labeled as containing "zero calories"." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diet_Pepsi The difference between one and zero calories is negligible.
