These commercials aired on USA on July 4th, 1988. Thanks to my cousin David for recording these.
1. USA Movie Commercial Bumper
2. Ambervision (Incredible sunglasses, and amazing music)
3. TV Guide
4. USA Movie Commercial Bumpers
5. Reebok (Finally, a commercial that uses the word "Hobgoblin")
6. Philadelphia Cream Cheese (For bagels only, please)
7. Encyclopedia Britannica (I remember these commercials airing ALL THE TIME on Nickelodeon in the 80's)
8. Promo for "Street Hawk" (Who cares about plot or story? If it's a guy riding a motorcycle at night, count me in!)
9. Promo for "The Brood" (Terrifying. I must watch it.)
10. Promo for "USA's Thursday Night Fights"
12. USA Movie Commercial Bumper
13. "Planet Of Dinosaurs" End Credits (Except for the kid, all of these people look like 70's porn stars)
14. USA Movie Commercial Bumper

LOL yeah, I remember those Encyclopedia Britannica commercials from Nickelodeon! In fact, my mom bought the books for me. It's over 20 years old but it's still in wonderful condition. The set is at her house today, along with that same "three volume desk reference set"! A dictionary, thesarus, and quototation book. When I stop by I sometimes sit down and look at them. :-) and i just found out...the guy from the commercial has a channel on youtube. he's babyboy71!

The kid in the Britannica commercial is Donovan Freberg. His father, the legendary Stan Freberg, is the voiceover.

Also, I love that the USA Movie bumpers look and sound like they're from the 70s even though this is 1988.

You never heard of the "The Brood"? You're missing out. One of the major cult horror movies of the era. The director, David Cronenberg, was the king of gross/disturbing/smart sci-fi/horror flicks, most famously "The Fly." He's more mainstream now - you probably know his last two movies, "A History of Violence" and "Eastern Promises." This has been Movie Geek Corner with Yohei72. Thank you for watching.

wow! the Ambervisions commercial was 2 min. long. man, commercials were so long then. Those Encyclopedia ads are some of the most classic of all time. i remember that guy's high-pitched, almost cartoonish voice. he's kinda got bad teeth tho

Even if you got the encylopedia britannica you would still have to go to the library. I remember in school when I had to do a report I was required to have several different information sources in my bibliography and only one or two could be from an encylopedia.

"I wouldn't have to worry about going to the library!" It didn't occur to me at the time (and, yeah, I remember that commercial, too), but that's hilarious. Any halfway-decent teacher would flunk a student for using just an encyclopedia as a source for a paper.

1-800-USA-1000 was like the number for EVERYTHING that you could possibly subscribe to or shake a stick at on USA Network in the 80s! Where can we get UV-400 and CR-39 glasses these days? Not with BluBlockers! Where does Encyclopedia Brown get off that a computer doesn't help with schoolwork? (Fast fact on that ad, famous adman Stan Freberg did the voice over, and his son Donovan is the kid and yes, they did appear on Nick like crazy)

Volumes 89, 90, and 91 air date is July 4, 1988 according to this guide: news.google.com/newspapers?id=WoZGAAAAIBAJ&sjid=bzMNAAAAIBAJ&pg=2433%2C279367 "Planet of Dinosaurs" is listed at 10 a.m. at the bottom of the third column in the Monday daytime movies section. "The Brood" can be found on p. 15 of the paper (p. 30 of the Google News navigator) at the top of column four. ETA: I corrected 80 to 90. Sorry for the typo.

Thanks for that info. I knew it was in the Summer of '88...just didn't know the exact date. I usually do research when things aired using old TV listings, but it can be a lot harder to find accurate cable listings from back then. "Planet of Dinosaurs" is somehow an appropriate movie to air on the Fourth of July.
@JohnnyUtah15
@JohnnyUtah15 10 жыл бұрын
80sCommercialVault You're welcome. Yes, accurate cable listings are harder to find, although I haven't searched too often. Google had disabled the search feature for the News Archives but it can be searched from the Newspapers Index news.google.com/newspapers I tried too many keywords for the movie including year and network, so I just put the title and found it on the second page of results. I'll have to look for the movie,

got to love 80-ies .. at least they bullshited us directly. I hate that most modern ads are more concerned to give us subtle messages about products, focusing on something else (boobs, smiles, cuteness). We want straigt product advertisements. Stop wasting ours and your time with bullshit

Ahh, the 80s, when I had both a subscription to TV Guide and my own set of encyclopedias (World Book, not Britannica). Yes, I was a weird kid. I don't quite know how showing a bunch of surrealistic images sells shoes. Given how much encyclopedias cost, the kid really should have gotten his parents' permission first. Plus, bragging that your space article goes all the way up to the moon landing is probably the wrong track to take in 1988. And yeah, the kid still should go to the library.

We had a Funk & Wagnall's encyclopedia set back then. My parents eventually got rid of them when they moved. I think they ended up throwing the set away because they couldn't find anyone interested in buying them!
