80's Commercials Vol. 92

These commercials aired on KTVU on March 6th, 1985. Thanks to my Aunt & Uncle for recording these.

Jeesus, even 25 years ago they still had those Disney anniversary commercials. I spent part of my youth in Orlando and it seemed like they were celebrating some kind of anniversary for Disney World every single one of the 10 years I spent there.

0:44--I love Wilt Chamberlain's lines in the USA Today commercial! 5:32--"Otto Matic"--what a great name! It reminds me of the movie "Airplane!", featuring an autopilot which is an inflatable dummy named "Otto." 8:03--I remember that when Datsun was transitioning to Nissan, they still said "At your Datsun dealer" for a while after the vehicles themselves had been rebranded. 8:33--What? They showed movies "for mature audiences" in prime time on free over-the-air TV back then? I thought that's what pay channels like HBO were for.

I'm pretty sure I've gone for every anniversary year too. 2000 is the only year I'm fuzzy on. Hopefully I'll make it for the 55th as well.

I saw those new Chrysler "Imported from Detroit" ads, and the first thing I thought of, was THIS ad and that Cadillac said it a LONG time ago.

@MeInTX He meant the last pass he threw before making that statement...not his last pass ever. Communication in general is cheaper these days because of improvements in infrastructure/technology as well as the obvious effects that internet-based communication have had on the world. The only competition a long-distance call would have had in 1985 was a pen and paper...or maybe a telegram (LOL).

I'm guessing in the print/TV advertising world of the 80's, a name change like that would have been a slow process and not something you could do overnight. This would have been only a few months after the name change, and it only refers to "your Datsun dealer".

2:00--Safeway is primarily a Western chain. I'm from Iowa, and we don't have them here--but it seems I remember seeing one in Des Moines years ago when I was a kid.

Adjusted for inflation, $384 is now around $925. It also says below the price "each way with round trip purchase" meaning the actual flight would have cost $769 (which adjusted for inflation is $1,851).

Airfares have gone down around 50% over the last 30 years after the airlines were deregulated in the late 70's. Safety records with airlines were also much worse and security measures pre-9/11 were practically nonexistent. Yes, the airplane seating was a lot roomier but IMO there's not many reasons to romanticize flying back then.

That wasn't Joe Namath's last pass, as any quick KZbin search will reveal... That ad reminds me I should probably plan a trip to LA around 2015 for Disneyland's 60th. I will never believe that 76 cents a minute for a phone call was ever a bargain, especially since AT&T now charges 8 cents a minute to the UK. Did people in 1985 really not know where Australia was? Shampoo is a really good movie, but it has an awful title. It sounds like it should be on a double bill at a drive-in.
