Oh, and if you can find it, there was a band from Italy in the early 80s called DIOXINA which were touted as a punk band, but they sounded like an Italian Metallica to me. Also Living Death out of Germany is worth checking out.

I hear you on that Testament claim, they have released more commercially driven albums, but there is still enough musicianship and creativity to make these essential purchases! The one downside about the debut is that, if you take away the stupid 'These Boots' cover, you're left with only 7 songs and an album of less than 28 mins. Compare that to Kill em All and objectively speaking its kinda hard to put 28 mins of greatness ahead of 51 mins of greatness.

I was in the Bay Area when all the great thrash was happening. Saw Exodus so many times, I've lost track. Sacrilege B.C., Vio-lence, Death Angel, Possessed, Attitude Adjustment. I could list so many more. What a great time.

A bit of a lesser known band, but Atrophy's 1988 debut album "Socialized Hate" is one of my favorite thrash metal debut albums at the moment. It's filled with lots of great guitar work, great drumming, and really good vocals. The band has been compared to other bands such as Testament, Forbidden, Nuclear Assault, Sacred Reich and Vio-lence. As of now the band has only put out two albums and are supposedly working on a third album but that has yet to be released.

Kill em All is a great album, but Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are damn near perfect albums which vastly improved on everything they did in their debut.

I knew you would not like Killian's vocals. It's an acquired taste but his chaotic and maniacal delivery fits PERFECTLY with the frenzied riffs on Eternal Nightmare. My personal favorite album of all-time. An 18 year old Demmel wrote 90% of the music here. And yes, the album cover is incredible.

I actually prefer Oppressing the Masses as it was one of the first thrash albums I heard back in high school outside of the Big 4, but Eternal Nightmare is a fantastic debut. I was lucky to see Vio-Lence perform in Philly last year and they were KILLER, as is their latest EP. Too bad Perry Strickland is gone, now they will probably never follow it up, but at least I got to cross them off my concert bucket list (which I thought I would never be able to do).

Long story as to why. Anyway, both of their albums are great but very different. Oppressing is not as frenzied, has more midtempo material and Sean's voice is a bit more controlled. It's also natural to prefer an album that you had your initial impressions from. I just love EN's rawness and those style off riffs.

Great list. I'm 52 now, so I bought nearly all of these as they came out, or at least had tapes from mates! Total favourites from the time.. Testament, Kreator, Coroner and Death Angel's first records are more or less the best from the debuts of that time. Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Voivod- all totally made much better records later on. Big shout for the Celtic Frost record as well.

I'm your age and honestly I don't think you can rank these properly unless you grew up in that era. These bands meant more to people of my generation than just how well they were produced or what technical skill level they have. If you were at a bon fire and tried to throw some of those "perfect" albums on you might get thrown in, but "mid" Suicidal will keep it going. Even though they might not be "perfection", Suicidal was very influential in the anit authority, skater and BMX scene (btw, I consider Rocky George to be in my personal top 4 with Friedman, Vai and Skolnick, he was revolutionary to a lot of kids). When I first head Slayer, Suicidal, Anthrax, S.O.D., Testament and Metallica that was all brand new and game changing. We would pass those tapes around in middle school secretly like it was contraband, and there was no YT or internet so the only way to even hear about them was in underground ways. I'm talking about someone's cousin in San Fran or NY taping a radio show and mailing it to OH so that band has to be something special to grab that kind of attention. We didn't have hi-def headphones to parse every note. We didn't care about guitar skill. They got your attention with the attitude and raw energy that punched through that fuzzy tape. Sh*t that scared your parents and p*ssed Tipper Gore off (Simon knows what I'm talking 'bout!). That's no disrespect to the list, a lot of those bands are great. And I guess to be fair is what do you consider great debut. Are you looking at it on a technical scientific level or how it changed the direction of metal music as a whole. I hope not sounding like "that guy", but to me its not a fair comparison if you didn't live through it and are judging it after 40 years of metal evolution. That's just my humble opinion.

@@BulletProofSoul1029 There was so much punk energy on all those early debuts.. especially Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax's first records.. Just get it made and released. Thrash totally changed Metal forever. Completely changed me. The heaviest and hardest Metal available early 80s was Maiden's first 3 records, Venom and Motorhead. For me, I always thought they were the top influences in early Thrash bands, and obviously the punk scene, especially The Exploited, Discharge and GBH. When Ride The Lightning and Spreading The Disease hit the decks though- fuck me that was the gamechangers. You can't make a second record without recording the first, but hell man, Ride The and Disease just changed me forever. I don't know how many hours I logged in air-guitaring to those albums, but the cut down pool cue I used as an axe had a worn away groove where the fake plectrum would hit. Both Anthrax and Metallica just were my favourite bands in the world for like 6 years solid.. seems longer.. And Justice For All is my favourite record ever made still.. those riffs and chugs \m/... When Testament came out in..87?.. That was gamechanger for me as well. I was in residential art college for a week out of every month on a job training scheme, and that Testament tape was worn out and snapped in our dorm. Stellar days.

@@SimonChinook Totally agree. The first time I heard Suicidal Tendencies "I Saw Your Mommy" and was like "WHAT IS THIS!" There was a girl in my neighborhood (in OHIO) who was the 2nd ranked female BMXer in the country. She knew a lot of California kids from being in that scene and they bring California punk and thrash music to town when they had competitions in the Midwest. That music grabbed you and shook you by your neck. I couldn't tell you or care what "mode" or "phrasing" they were playing in, all I knew is I felt that sh*t in my soul. Same for Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, Voivod and even punk like Bad Brains and Dead Kenned even Janes Addiction. These guys a couple years older than me used to have parties and jam at one of their grandparents barn in the country and they played "Whores" in like '86 and man Navarro was something fresh and different too. I can remember even now the circumstances around hearing those bands for the 1st time. On a sided note most these guys played Ibanez and I've been in love with that era's RG5 series since. Anyway yeah, to me it was about being on the forefront of the movement where your taking a chance because its new and never done before, but you don't care because your about your art without the old rules. And it really was art because now after knowing a little bit more about music, its more impressive knowing they still had knowledgeable about composition and theory. They weren't just creating something new based purely on chaos (I know some Slayer haters will disagree, but eff 'em). It reminds me a lot of the J-Metal scene today with all the great talent coming from the young kids in Japan. Especially the ladies in Nemophila. If your not familiar with them, I'd recommend going on their official channel and starting with some of their live rehearsal covers playlist, especially AC/DC and KISS, as starter then go to their originals. They're honestly my favorite band at the moment. A lot if talent all the way around. Any cheers, bro. Great chat.

Fantastic. I know Thrash isn't your favorite, but you did the genre proud today. I love seeing Kreator's debut so high. It's almost barbaric and I love it. Not a huge Exodus fan so maybe they would be slightly lower for me. I agree that Welcome to Hell isn't very thrashy, but if you're going to include it, it's got to be perfection. I love Slayer, I don't love Tom's vocals (except on Reign in Blood), but he brings a wild energy on Show No Mercy that fits the music.

Very good list, agree with 99% of it. I would put Vio-lence at the top as Eternal Nightmare is just a thrash masterpiece. It took me a long time to appreciate Kilian's voice, much similar for it taking a long time to appreciate a voice like King Diamond's. Once you get adapted to it though it really allows you to soak it in and appreciate the body of work. It helps define Vio-lence, you couldn't have that band without him. Eternal Nightmare just stands by its self, it's an amazing album.

I fucking LOVE Testament The Legacy! Those "chopping meat with a butcher's knife" riffs are simply amazing, and the entire album is a scorcher. Holy fucking shit, First Strike Is Deadly, Curse of the Legions of Dead, Raging Waters, Over the Wall, etc etc.... Ecstacy (to me). Also I LOVE the original production, which makes it all sound so sinister and evil. First Strike Still Deadly remake had none of that sinister feel to it. Talk about evil sinister vibe, Exodus Bonded By Blood is also on my top tier. Holy shit! Other favorites out of the list: Annihilator (Aliiiice IN HELL!), Kreator, Metallica (debatable though. See below), Megadeth (also see below), Death Angel (Mistress of PAAAAAIIIIN! Lady Domination! ... ), Forbidden (!!!!!! FUCK ME IT IS SOOO FUCKING GOOD!... Through Eyes of GLASS!!!), SOD, Heathen (love that album, Vio-Lence, and Slayer (see below though), Possessed!! For me Thrash became boring when it got that touch of cold perfection in the later 80s. It began with Testament's debut album. You know, I loved the Legacy Demo#1, but then I was dissapointed, when The Legacy came out. It was so clean and polished.

Glad to see that you put Suicidal Tendencies and D.R.I on the list. I used to get into arguments with people about the first Suicidal Tendencies album. Everybody insited it was a punk album, but the lead solos made me think it was a heavy metal album/band. Have you ever checked out Second Coming by Battalion of Saints? That's another band I get into arguments with people about them. Sure, the hung their boots in the punk camp, but Second Coming reminds me a lot of Show No Mercy by Slayer. Any thoughts on Discharge? (Especially Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing) or G.I.S.M from Japan? Now THAT'S "CROSSOVER"!

I'm surprised to see Coroner this low, it's ome of my favorites! A few great albums missing from the list that I think you could like, most glaring omission being Infernal Majesty - None Shall Defy. I'm also sure you'll like others such as Rigor Mortis' self titled, Hellwitch - Syzygial Miscreancy, Ripping Corpse - Dreaming With the Dead, Demolition Hammer - Tortured Existence, Skeletal Earth - Eulogy for a Dying Fetus, Protector - Golem, and some tech thrash: Watchtower - Energetic Disassembly, Sieges Even - Life Cycle. Mekong Delta - self titled, and Target - Mission Executed (those last two aren't the bands' best albums, but still worth checking out, and I also recommend checking out their later material) Also happy to see Toxik rated this high. A fantastic album imdeed! Okay, they all are, not a single bad album on this list (although DRI and ST's albums aren't very high on my list either. I love many of DRI's later albums but ST just never connected with me). Keep up the good work my man! Also: WHOAH! I see that Sacred Reich's Ignorance is not on the list! I know it's impossible to include everything, but this is one of the big ones!

Just a point about timing. The argument in favour of Kill'em all is that it was ahead of its time. No point comparing Kill'em all to The Legacy (for example) which came later.

Awesome list! I'm 51 and grew up immersed in all this stuff... Great to see Kreator so high (most days Endless Pain is my fav Kreator album). For me: Coroner, Forbidden and Destruction would all be in the Fantastic category, and Annihilator, Toxik and Venom would be lower - no way those albums are as good as the others in the Fantastic category. Man- that Venom LP.. first time I heard that was NYE 85 ish when I was 15, with my mate Paul in his neighbour's house, Steve, who was a huge metalhead and a few years older than us. He put it on, gave us some awful cider based punch and our first joints.. Love that record to this day. Cycle ride home was interesting.. lot of giggling and crashing. It's weird, but I can't remember when they started calling it Thrash.. it was all metal still mostly early 85 as there just wasn't a lot of bands a round getting signed.. mostly, if anything it was called speed metal.. Venom definitely called what they did Black Metal from the get go, early 80s onwards.. and that's pretty much the only genre I remember in the early days, which was largely self publicity from Cronos and the lads. Thrash only started to stick, from my memory anyway, around the end of 86 and into 87 as the band explosion in the wake of Metallica and Anthrax, who probably lead the way in terms of visibility at the start.

@@MetalTrenches Totally mate.. this kicked off a few.. like getting my first Metallica and Anthrax t shirts and instantly cutting the sleeves off.. Damage Inc and I Am The Law respectively.. my huge white Nike high tops as well.. ripped jeans and leather painted jacket.. I painted the Ride The Lightning cover on it. I was so lucky that Thrash hit at the time I was turning 16. It was having your own thing.. even traditional Heavy Metal fans looked at us weird as we had that goofy Anthrax and early Metallica look.. especially the baggy Bermuda shorts and a leather jacket haha. That period, 85- 89.. before the Black Album landed and fucked Thrash almost overnight, as well the rise of Grunge.. those four years of pure Thrash were amazing. I see the same look and feel for the younger generations of Metal heads now with the rise of New Wave of death metal and deathcore.. they are totally loving it and look like they belong to something.. it's fucking awesome.. Metal is probably the best it's ever been right now in terms of bands and sounds.. last 10 years have been truly exceptional in terms of releases and shows.

Although we have very different opinions, it's great fun to hear different perspectives on something we all hold very near and dear here. Not complaining you didn't include it (I realize there's probably 50 more debuts you could have included and people would still whine about something missing 😂) but for me, one of the absolute BEST debuts, if not number one, is Rage's Reign of Fear. Great list and you do a good job explaining why and where you rank the albums. I started listening to thrash in the late '80s and I think it's hard sometimes to compare a 1983 release to a 1986 one, say. It all evolved so quickly, with every band trying to find their sound.

Each their own ofc but Kill em all should be way higher. It's one of those albums that made thrash metal. Kill em all was released 5 years before the legacy from testament for example. Metallica set the example with that album and encouraged other bands to play thrash metal. (And bonded by blood should be way higher , classic)

Speak English Or Die is a complete and total timeless masterpiece that needs to be studied and honored until the end of time. I loved it when I was a teenager in 85 but time has since seasoned it to perfection and now it has sacred cow status. I would have put that album in perfection (because I'm not pussy whipped or part of the douche crew),but that's okay because I think you got everything else correct. Although I would have put Bonded By Blood and Killing Is My Business( the final kill mix of Killing is Megadeth's best album. There I said it!) in perfection as well. I don't think it is a hot take at all to like Morbid Tales better than To Mega Therion because it is better. I think people tend to get blinded by Mega Therion's God like album art.

Powermad's release in 1989 Absolute Power was a classic and would be very high on my list, it was their only full length release until 2016 or so - that album is just a banger! Nuclear Assault would be much higher on my list, while you may not like John's voice the songs are just killer, everything fits together and is very solid...although the cheese factory production leaves a lot to be desired.

@@robr9170 Powermad suffered from poor marketing and label support, I think they might have been huge if they got more support...Nuclear did get better and production improved on future releases...I love Survive also🤘. They fell off quite a bit after Handle with Care, but it was still decent stuff in the early 90's, I thought Third World Genocide was just ok around 2005

You do make a good point, when I was a teenager... 1983/1989 Bathory was totally considered a thrash band. In fact Thrash covered an awful lot of different styles, which is probably why Thrash seems less generic than newer genres. I mean put Celtic Frost next to Slayer next to Megadeth next to Bathory, they all sound completely different and individual, compared to say NWOSDM which all sounds very similar.

Pretty much all the staples of that period here. Great you included Fear of Tomorrow, the title track rips! But Infernal Overkill is still, for me, the, thrash album bar none......ok, tinny sounding drumming an understatement, and not gonna go overboard on the vocals, lol, but irregardless of those things, the riffs slay and the whole thing produces an atmosphere of which seems to have been a thing of that era. I had most of these albums at the time, and i was more up for what might follow from Destruction than any of them. And yeah, sophomore albums a great idea : ))

Nice one, although more than a few are not 100% Thrash (as you mentioned) and missed a few notable ones - Sacred Reich being the one I missed the most. Also there's not a single Brit band, great debuts there - Sabbat and Xentrix for example and then personally there are two 80's debuts I personally love - Watchtower and an ultra uknown christian band called Sacrament (ops this one is from 1990, actually). Also in the hybrids crossover/thrash, Acrophet had a great one. Anyway, there's a lot of great stuff in that era ;)

Man watching this tier list made me realize I was WAY TOO HARSH on a lot of these albums in the discord lol. After watching this video im definitely remaking the list because there are some I enjoy better than others. I think its cause felt pressured with some of the people in discord since didn't wanna make them mad, but in doing that, feel like wasn't really honest with my tier list. I do agree that all the albums are worth a listen, its just there's certain styles of thrash i enjoy more than others, like Im more into the heavy metal/speed metal side of thrash. There's like a couple personally im just not a fan at all like D.R.I. and Sepulturas, but the rest I had fun relistening to, just maybe I wont try cramming these in the span of 4 days lol. Also nice tier list and hope you do a sophomore video because one of my biggest issues personally listening to all the debuts was that I like they're sophomore album more, but there are some debuts i prefer and some that grew on me a lot more than i thought they did. Hope you make more of these tier lists and show off more new music too since been helping me expand my taste in music by a lot.

When those came out Anthrax, S.O.D., and Metallica, followed by Manowar, then Wasp for easier listening, were the biggest bands in my school. Surprising for a podunk Ohio school of around 400 total students. Teenage me would have a vastly different list. Current me, especially since these are the debuts, align pretty close. Except Possessed. Never could get into them. Much preferred Infernal Majesty for the blackened thrash. But it's your list and a damn fine one.
