First of all let me thank you for all your videos. I recently had to replace head gasket and cylinder head (corrosion in water jacket at rear which caused head gasket to fail on No.6 cylinder) and your videos were very helpful to watch, although doing the job while the engine is still in the car is quite a lot different and difficult (Did the entire job by myself.....took me near two weeks doing it!!!!......but I tried to do everything exact with no shortcuts as well replaced near all hoses). I did not do the timing chain, although maybe I should have. (engine has got 395000km on it), On your video you said to do the timing chain one has to have the head off, but I have read online some people taking the timing cover off with head still on. I also asked a retired mechanic who told me that some work shops remove the timing cover without pulling the head, as well I think he said they remove the dowel pins so they can get timing cover back on, but he said it was not something he would do. Can't find a single video anywhere of someone actually doing it without lifting the head. Was also told by retired mechanic that oftern mechanics just replace the timing chain with a removal link chain and replace it without ever removing timing cover, but then I wonder what condition the tensioner guides would be in. Personally I would rather put a genuine Toyota timing chain and new guides in. Anyway just wondering if you know of any mechanics which have removed timing cover and replaced timing chain without removing head? Thanks again for all your videos......A lot of people here in Australia still drive the 80Series.

I've seen someone do a timing chain without pulling the head. It came to me to fix the head gasket that was puking oil after being mangled by the timing cover removal. I'd never do it without pulling the head and replacing everything. The guides are very common to break.

@@OTRAMM Yeah that's what I thought would be scared of happening, but I really don't see why that section of the head gasket could not carefully be cut away, because that section of the head gasket does not really do much, hence a modified seal of some description could be customised. Maybe the timing cover would need to be modified by shaving the top of it to suits some type of custom seal. The biggest problem i see in such a mod would be the top two bolts of the timing cover, but maybe some custom precision spacer on top of the timing case where the bolts are could solve this or better still somebody designs a new timing cover casting to incorporate that and sell it as a kit. Why the hell they ever needed to designed it in such a stupid way is beyond me, but surly with the amount of 80series still out there someone smart could design a modification kit and make money out of it. If I had the time and a test bed 1fz fe I would almost be tempted to design a mod kit. I think quite bit of money could be made out of such a kit.

Thank you so much, that was really helpful and informative.... it looks like the same procedure as the LC100 (same engine). I have gone through the same steps as yours few years ago but surely not as professional as yours

When you're breaking the main bolt free, you can rotate the socket on the breaker bar square drive to get different angle options.

Yeah, I tried that between video cuts and didn't get anything better. Usually that works though.

Thanks for the video. You mentioned you were going to list the specs on the crank holding tool in the description, but I can’t find it 😢. I have a buddy with a plasma table and I want to build a tool for my two 80’s. Thanks!

This more of an oil pump replacement question. Is there a reason you can't pull the oil pump and swap in a new one by just pulling the cover? I know the FSM say you have to remove half the engine, but isn't that just to get the gear set? It seems luke you could remove the cover, pressure relief spring, and then slap it back together, or am i missing something?

The outer portion of the pump is part of the timing cover. So, technically the timing cover is the oil pump. I've never seen or heard of a 1fz oil pump failing.

@OTRAMM that make sense. Thank you for the quick reply! Good to know, just one of the niggles that I couldn't find in the fsm or forums.

Amazing video! If the radiator is removed is there a reason you wouldn’t use an impact driver to remove the main pulley bolt? Thx.

Thankyou OTRAMM, doing this job soon on our FZJ105 here in Oz. That little O'RING you mention behind the timing cover, if it is leaking, is there anything that can be done to slow down the leak, and not do a whole engine out? Love your channel, thanks heaps.

The timing cover o-ring is under full oil pressure so I doubt there's anything that will slow it down without replacing it.

We actually have a company that stocks our bins with JIS hardware. I think they're a fairly local company but they're awesome. They're the only ones near us that keep a wide variety of JIS in stock. Fastware is the company.
