80 SERIES - TOYOTA'S BEST EVER?? Roothy
When it comes to maintenance my cousin Darcy reckons you don’t touch things until they’re busted. His 80 Series was a case in point. In 200,000km of hard use the poor old thing’s never had more than book servicing from the local dealer and it only got that because Darce planned on trading it on a new model sooner or later. As far as ‘accessories’ goes he kits them out in typically rural fashion, a bull bar built by the local truck engineers and the optional tow kit for the horse float. It’s hard to see the value in a snorkel when you’re used to taking the tractor to town when it rains.
That’s been Darcy’s form for the last thirty years - buy a new Toyota ‘for the farm’, pound it silly on the corrugated track to town and then when the thing’s splitting it’s visors, the suspension’s pancaked and the muffler looks like a moonscape, trade it on a newie.
No worries when times are good and a bloke’s got chits in for drought assist and flood relief at the same time but a couple of things - called El Nino and John Howard - have pretty much stuffed up life on the land. At least the new Toyota buying part of it anyway.
That’s what Darcy told me four years ago when he decided to keep his ’95 for a bit longer. I tried to convince him to spend some money on it back then but apart from a new scented tea bag hanging off the mirror not much changed.
Now I’ve got a bit of a personal interest in my cousin’s truck because we borrow it for family holidays and such when a bit more comfort than Milo’s split bench and flap air conditioning can make all the difference. That’s the difference between me sleeping inside the tent or up on the roof rack in the rain…

I'd include the 105 series. Basically a 100 on an 80 chassis.

I'm 99% sure that's my old 80 series that I sold about 11 years ago with all the mods I did to it back then. He saved himself a lot more than 10k I can assure you of that! Regretted selling her ever since. Good to see she's still going strong.

Still got my old girl. 1991 GXL 1HZ 618600km on clock. Unopened motor just kept servicing up. Had her 10 years. Bought her in May 2011 with 422000km on clock stock standard for $7500.Can't bring myself to sell it. Bought a new DMAX in May last year but still love driving the 80.

I've got a 1992 80 series 1hz non-turbo and love it. I purchased it approx 18 months ago and have been doing some work on it and itching to go out and use it... I'm just waiting for the bloody covid curfew and restrictions here in Melbourne to finish then I'm out there exploring our lovely country...

@@elmo8348 The 1Hz that's in mine is an old fashioned old technology power plant. And that's it's beauty. No puters, no limp home mode, nothing that can't be fixed by a good bush mechanic. Treasure it because AFAIK there won't be many similar engines in the new 4wds.

Worst thing I ever did was to sell my family 80 and buy a 76. The 80's still going, and my mate reckons he's still happy with it. The 76 is long gone...

I did just sell my 80 at the start of Covid, but to my brother. I'm not too worried as it'll give life to his other 80 and get him out of the bloody Falcon wagon he's been driving. 😂👍

I have my 80 1hz manual 20 years now, since I was a teenager. Twin arb lockers, powauto PTO winch runs off gearbox, lifted, big wheels, roof rack, all around steel sliders, custom front and rear bars. 375,000k on it now. Guy knocks on my door and says I’ll give you $5k cash. I took his number, never called him back 😅

After being almost killed in the high country earlier this year in my 90 series, I picked up a 1HZ 80 series a few months back with a few goodies. Still yet to take it offroad due to my injuries, but I will eventually. 🤠

ROOTHY THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE 76 V8 CRUISER IT HAS MORE POWER THAN ANY 80 SERIES AND WITH A LIFT , COME ON IT IS GREAT. YES I THINK THE 80'S BODY IS MORE SOLID BUT WITH EXTRAS. THE 76 IS GREAT. YES YOUR 76 WAS STANDARD BUT TO SAY IT IS DISAPPOINTING I DO NOT AGREE. I DROVE BOTH SO THINK BEFORE YOU TALK NONSENSE.

Mine was hot rodded by the end of it - but still only as comfortable as a good 45 series, no room inside, no comforts - awesome truck off-road and heaps of power, even strong, but a good 80 can do most of that and more - sorry, people hate the truth -
