It working great so far! I cloned the HDD into a 250gb SSD PCIe and boy is it fast now! That was the only problem with the laptop -- the slow HDD. But now I have no complaints thus far.

but how's the thermals? I got the i7 8750h with 1050ti and it does get up to a max of 50-60 C when doing some gaming. And that's some light gaming, haven't dared tried pushing with higher settings.

You can upgrade the panel to a brighter, lower latency , 120hz, better color reproduction screen for around 100 bucks too. Upgrade is easy as included in the link below. www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/8kffll/120hz_panel_for_dell_75677577_or_similar_g_series/ kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4ncY4Rpq9dsgJY

Fantastic review, one of the most thorough and well structured ones I have come across for this model! Thank you very much! I'm on the look-out for an respectable laptop with good decent hardware performance like this for Illustration purposes. So that means running some of Adobe applications like Photoshop, Illustration as well as a few other art applictions like Blender. With a budget of less than $900 (still a student) this fits the bill perfectly. I just need to ask a few quick questions, how has editing experience using this laptop been like for you? More specifically photo-editing and video-editing have you ever experience constant thermal throttling on this device when editing large media files? I can also tell that the screen looks pretty dull and color accuracy would be an issue, especially for video editing and photoshopping. In your opinion do you think this laptop gets a pass for use in media files editing? I use mostly Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for my work. hope to hear from you thank you so much!

Nicholas Tcs For student use I would value performance over color accuracy. It's also not impossible to recalibrate the screen, a service I would look into. And don't forget to use an SSD for your boot drive.

Just got mine. I7-8750, 8gb DDR4, 128gb M.2 SSD and 1tb 5400rpm, 1050 ti, 15", for $729 from Walmart. Swapped out the 128gb with an Adata SX8200 480gb. Read/write scores went from about 550/420 to 1900/1700. Second 8gb stick is on its way, for a nice total of 16gb. Total investment is $948 for a pretty sweet laptop. Looking at replacing the screen with the $90 120hz N156HHE-GA1 - the original one is a bit dark, but usable, for now. Will eventually swap out the 1tb drive with an SSD. I've had the same I7-2640m Lenovo T510 laptop for almost 5 years. I was overdue for an upgrade. Lol. Note for replacing the M.2 drive, with an NVMe drive: You will need to create a special Dell USB recovery drive, from their website. It has the Windows OS and drivers and Dell software on it. It was pretty easy once I figured out what I was doing. I'm very happy with my purchase. Even taking the bottom cover off is a piece of cake. I've done it like 8 times now. Lol. Great performance, looks nice, and I haven't had any problems with heat. :)

Make sure that 120 Hz panel is the Chi Mei display, not AUO. When connected to a Dell G3 the AUO screens have a poor color bit depth resulting in sharp color gradients that are painfully obvious.

I have a dell g3 15 with 1050 and i7 8750h, I recommend to undervolt with intel XTU the CPU with -0.140 and the GPU to -0.100 and ur throtelling problems will be solved, the performance hit is negligible "around 7 percent for me but degrees are 70s for the gpu and 75 to 80 for the cpu at maximum load with almost no thermal throttling" yet bare in mind the fans are before and after adjustment soooooooooo loud, loudest fans i have ever heard in a laptop yet even with my cool temps u think u gonna burn ur hand when u touch the back of the laptop just by hearing the fans.

The one I bought from a dell store came with only 4gb of RAM, i5, and 1tb hard drive. I tried to use Adobe premiere pro cc and it's lagging and would say 'not responding'. I also noticed that it takes about a minute or two to boot up, and even just by right clicking the desktop, the box where i can do refresh takes 2 to 3 seconds. I'm not very techy and I just want to do video editing (not 4k stuff) What do I need to do to make this laptop faster? Appreciate your help!

Best to get an NVMe SSD and slap it in the M.2 socket, then clone and wipe the HDD to use as additional storage. A bit more expensive for the M.2 but you will get the benefit of faster transfer speeds, additional storage space and an easier cloning experience. You will have to give the NVMe a drive letter, before rebooting or it will boot back to the HDD, in my experience.

Gamontute Studio It'll be fine. CPUs are designed to take the heat. The fans will wear out before the CPU ever gets damaged. And if the fans do wear out, the built-in thermal protection will downclock the CPU automatically.

If temps are your concern, just disable TurboBoost in your BIOS. This alone got my temps @ 73c GPU & 80c CPU after 1 hour+ of Battlefield 4 at High settings. I undervolted the CPU -.09V and disabled TurboBoost and got max temps of 71c GPU & 77c CPU (I'm running an i5 8300H and 1060 Max Q in my G3)

Theje Will disabling the turbo-boost affect the gaming performance?? Because it wont increase above 3Ghz,since turbo-boost is disabled.
@Slap_Tech
@Slap_Tech 6 жыл бұрын
Disabling turbo boost will clock the CPU at a max of 2.3 GHz. And after gaming with the turbo boost disabled, 3dMark Fire Strike benched at about 6300 (not bad) and Witcher 3 gameplay was virtually unaffected. The temps had a maximum of 74 degrees after playing Witcher 3 for about half an hour. Loading times were also unaffected. I give gaming with turbo boost disabled my full endorsement.

That is a PCIe slot so getting an NVMe drive will suit you just fine.

I have bought the G3 with 128GB ssd. Can I just replace the HDD? And upgrade the ram?
@Slap_Tech
@Slap_Tech 6 жыл бұрын
Should be easy to swap out the 2.5" storage drive with an SSD. After the swapping is done, go into Disk Management, find the unallocated partition and give it a drive letter. I also upgraded this G3 post-review with an 8 gig stick of Crucial DDR4 (PC4) 2666 memory. It was the cheapest RAM I could find and it works great!

of course while gaming the system has to put in a lot of work as as a result a lot of heat is released but not that much that it might burn your fingers but a ok amount. If you are worried about heating try undervolting the cpu

All Soccer Fortnite will run 60fps in High (not Epic) details most of the time, will dip when the magic missiles hit the fan. PubG is best left to medium-ish details at 1600x900.

If the Dell G3 has an equal or slightly slower GPU or CPU I'd still go with the Dell. Overall the Dell has a better keyboard, speakers and touchpad period so it's much more comfortable to use. But of course if your job or hobby has you doing CPU intensive tasks and a relatively cheap Acer has a better CPU or GPU you need for it, I can't fault you for going with the Acer.

Is it really worth it to switch to ssd?
@Slap_Tech
@Slap_Tech 4 жыл бұрын
If you're looking at only numbers and read/write speeds you're not getting the whole story. SATA HDD's read/write at about 230MB/sec (if that) while SATA SSD's read/write at around 550MB/sec, which is only 2X faster. But that's only half the story. The real beast is in the seek time, where SSD speeds really shine and is about 13X faster and THAT is what makes the HUGE difference.
