The fact that Low team couldn't finish their stuff in time is the epitome of DIY armor. Often it can be much cheaper, and more suited to your taste and application, but it takes A LOT of time and attention.
@lol_surprisefoo3 жыл бұрын
So to be honest, IF you place value on your TIME, DIY projects can be time intensive and therefore VERY expensive. A production fab shop can pump out these assemblies much faster than I would using the same assembly fixtures and tooling. Whatever I made for myself was far more than a production piece. They were works of art.
@CanadaBud233 жыл бұрын
@@lol_surprisefoo It really does depend on a person, very case by case. For me I pretty much fab everything. I find out quite often what I make is superior to what is bought/available but very focused on a specific application. While manufactured products are made to try and cover everyone's needs in the same product which doesn't always work, but that's just the nature of manufactured products and trying to make as many people as possible happy. Despite the the skill and experience I feel that I am very "cost effective" in labour. Some people think they are so valuable in time that they try to justify a very high rate and/or would put off work based on that alone. Honestly in my opinion only, I think people are only worth maybe a quarter of what they say realistically. From my perspective usually that stems from a big ego, or a large chip on their shoulder. Anyway that's what I think. With that said, with people in the "I think I can't do that" catagory, they can. And the great thing about us is the ability to want to learn. Building your own stuff is the best teaching/experience tool you can use. My favourite saying goes: How do you build a cage? -Best way is to start fukin up some tubes!
@volundrfrey8963 жыл бұрын
@@lol_surprisefoo It's not really a question of valuing your time imo, most of us have spare time for hobbies... at least anyone who have time to watch this video does. So if you enjoy building things then that's a great hobby and use of your spare time, if you don't then it's not and you should just buy the parts. You should see it as an alternative to watching TV, not an alternative to working.

I can honestly say that I am totally impressed with the custom work. While I agree the choices made were much cheaper -- the $800 vs $4000 -- the cost of all the custom work wasn't clear. (did I miss that in the video?) Two questions I think most of us in the "real world" might have, or at least I have... 1. What would that labor typically cost someone who didn't have connections and friends? 2. What's the difference in added weight between the custom work and the expensive stuff?

Most definitely. I've got a project car in my garage and like doing the fabrication myself. I'm only limited by the amount of tools I'd need to make more custom parts. Of course money becomes an issue with both, but ya really can save a boatload of dollars if you're able to do it yourself, as long as you have the tools, time & material. Plus their's more satisfaction in your work when you're fabricating & installing yourself. Hopefully some day soon more project comes together & works great.
