great video and wished these videos existed years ago when i had bought my e90, not too much info was out there was people were just trading them in for upgrades, turns out these engines are one of the most reliable engines i can think of and fairly easy to work with no experience given BMW reputation, took me awhile to find out the tuning and mods are extremely limited for n52 models especially for the minimal gains achieved when you look at money you pay to gains ratio, but in the long wrong these things are the tacomas of the sedan world and go to my grave stating that, so investing money in good parts and maintenance will be really rewarding with a fun & amazing daily driver, some things Ive learned and want to point out over the years there's two variants of the n52 engine, one being from the UK and the other being the US domestic models, the UK models have a different engine cover (grey) and came with a much bigger air intake compared to the US e90 models which i believe were produced in mexico, grabbing an OEM original air intake on eBay from overseas is your best first upgrade to get that simple mod knocked out the way, aFe also makes aftermarket intakes but from my research, its hard to justify paying the bit of extra money for minimnal gains on an aFe air intake , over what BMW engineers had intended for their cars, although an OEM air intake can cost around $300 even less, its alot for minimal gains so going with an aFe aftermarket 3 stage inake is justifiable due to availability , cylinder air filters are what originally came with 328 models but were downgraded for the US e90 models with charcoal flat air filters, a common mod is doing a charcoal delete to increase airflow if you rather not upgrade the air intake (the charcoal filter for smog and cleaner air airntake reasons i believe so heads heads up on your state policies) just helps the engine breathe better, there is also an upgraded aftermarket clamp on silicone hose, that can be purchased on ebay for about $30 which connects to the air intake and improves airflow over the stock plastic OEM tubing which i believe the aftermarket hose just has better aerodynamics with the way its shaped, the upgraded air intake and mentioned silicone hose take more or less 20minutes to swap out and should be done together IMO, super easy also a begginer suggested part upgrade you could do in less than 5 minutes with the upgrades above is a minor upgrade which is heavily debated, is the e90 aftermarket front grill air scoops, for as long as i can remember there has been mumerous claims, that they are worthless "ricer" upgrades and others claiming they do help with aerodynamics depending on your ride trip, there was a poster who dyno'd his e90 and posted the results being no different than having them off, but the counter argument there is i remember reading, you need to be cruising at high speeds to receive high air flow thru the grill intakes which makes sense, when crusing highways at higher than usually city speeds completely make sense to me vs a stationaired dyno test with no cool air flow being pushed thru the grill, i have not heard much updates on effectiveness of these air scoops which only are a few bucks so that debate is still "up in the air" (no pun intended) considering the test anyalsis for something so more minor on 20+ year old cars right now seem rather "pointless" as it stands, but personally i believe they work for long drives & touring which this car is amazing and kinf od built for in general. if you chose to hold off on the mentioned above upgrades/mods i would HIGHLY suggest high performance spark plugs and metal ignition coils as your first official maintenance and upgrade tune, for around $150 you can grab metal ignition coils, the plastic Bosch ones (oem) are okay, and get the job done i guess, but it would only make sense to get the better high performance metal coils with how much fun youll be reving the engine, blew out my fair share of plastic oem coils revving it pretty good just having fun as a daily which i believe the engine can endure alot more stress when having fun revving it but the plastic coils are just notorious for giving under that amount of stress (depending if you drive it hard or not, which i honestly do) as for spark plugs i prefer NGK iridium but honestly up to your choose personally after you finish the some of the easiest bolt on upgrades/mods that take no less than an hour all combined i think it would be wise to invest into some quality wheels which will without a doubt change ride quality depending on your setup and of course your model, being AWD/RWD the stock BMW tires are pretty trash due to being run flats which i guess serve there purpose for what they are but a new set of tires and even rim size will drastically change how the car drives and turns alone, i went with wider/bigger tires on my AWD and mpg slightly went up due to less time to travel, buy being wider had more friction on the road, and being wider the turning wasnt as sharp but man can i blast thru corners... the correct wheel setup can change alot of factors specially when you start setting up suspension kits down the line after all that i would then start to focus on the bolt ons mentioned in the video from the exact order, 3 stage manifold then headers and either an exhaust or suspension upgrades cause these seem to be where this is majority of investment for parts comes in compared, to other parts after all that theres really not much you can mod/upgrade outside of proper maintenance , and this is where i would start messing with ECU tunes because then you can get the full power from all the upgrades that have been added with some tuning, the reason you wait for this being a final step is because not many people know or mention the ecu will tune itself over time, minimally when you've added aftermarket/upgraded parts the more you drive your system pulls the data and statistics and the ecu will slowly adjusted itself but yeah youll still want to send it in for proper tuning to match your setup somewhere along the lines of your project you'll want to grab a throttle mod chip this will help with giving instance throttle response when pushing the pedal for extra fun and performance really unlocking the cars potential from manufacture down tuning ( even base model bmws have tons of power they just dont want anybody I.E. elderly clientele to go full petal to the metal so theyre down tuned from the factory before reaching consumers.. lame but understandable considering the targeted clientele for bmw love to beat and drive the hell out of the latest models before upgrading) but a chip can also help with lead foots putting it into Eco mode also a $80 hood sway bar is worth the money for what you pay, another simple bolt on, also a m series steering wheel upgrade can greatly change the quality of life and drive of the car cause after all its what youre using ever time you drive, which is a worth wild upgrade down the line cant really think of much performance wise, after that its kind of just cosmetic upgrades, even even upgrading seating and the infotainment systems, body kits and headlights are also popular, though some people really do prefer trying to stick to OEM if anyone can mention other upgrades mods or cosmetic features feel free to let me know as this is just what i can think of at the top of my head thru the years i know alot of the n52 crowd gets tons of slack from n54 fanboys but the reality is the n52 is a much better reliable daily driver and lots of fun, with the car market heading the way it is i believe these will be more sought out for just on the engines alone if you want a super reliable cross country touring car with comfort and a good aspirated sound, i personally do not see any other perfect daily driver besides maybe a porshe vr6 955 that offers the same comfort durability and reliability. defintely not the most luxurious, fastest or prestigious cars but theyre built to last when taken care of. the n54 is a fine car just too sporty for a daily unless you have the pocketbooks but even then more prone to maintenance issues. these cars are just a great all around sport sedan with good specs and fun to drive to its limits without fear or something breaking at the end of the day

The N52's high torque @ stock is impressive IMO. When I first bought mines I had to be easy with the gas pedal while turning corners because the RW would spin and I would unintentionally drift a bit. I ran the VIN a while back and the specs said I had the N52 engine with 230HP vs the 215 most people have so i guess I lucked up. As for mods the car came with an AFE cold air intake and the sport suspension system so the car is lower than most stock e90's. I would get pretty good sounds coming from the engine, you could hear the air being sucked in and people thought I actually had something nice under the hood....Nope!😂

yeah man the engines on these things actually sound damn good even just for being stock they got that nice aspirated sound that you just dont really here no more, the power on them is jusut enough to have fun in the cities revving high enough to let the engine rip without completely hitting top speeds, they really remind me of the 2000s m3s that are now classics, them being not complete power houses but just build perfect where you can let the engine breathe and wind with high rpms and not having to worry about picking up too much speed, literally funnest cars to be driving outside of sports cars, and for the n52 to be the last naturally aspirated engine from bmw just makes it that much sweeter, a good intake, exaust headers and manifold are keys to letting them sing

I have a 2007 BMW 328I Coupe, what price range should I be looking for on the headers, 3-stage manifold, and tune for the manifold
@8020Media10 ай бұрын
Prices can vary significantly on some upgrades, especially headers. The 3-stage intake manifold should be right around $500, another $600-800 will get you a solid set of headers (though, they can get up to $1,500+ depending on brand), and about $400-500 for a tune. Ultimately, about $1,500-1,700 should get you a quality setup with all three of these N52 mods. If you go to a shop for install then I'd factor in another ~$500-700 in labor costs.
@garrettstiles78086 ай бұрын
Add another ~$700 for new DISA valves. They’re ticking time bombs if you reuse the ones you get on a used 3Stage intake manifold, and cheaper to do before the install. Just beware: I did this same set of upgrades on my ‘07 328i and it all ended up a good grand or two beyond what everyone said it would all cost. Build some realistic cushion into your expectations.
@ripppking16 күн бұрын

@garrettstiles780816 күн бұрын
@ because I didn’t want to pull the manifold to get to the bottom one again I just went OEM. ~$700 unfortunately (which is insane) but I wasn’t willing to roll the dice. I also just had the top end rebuilt for like $4k and wasn’t willing to risk tiny rubber and plastic bits going into a half-new engine. From everything I’ve seen there are no consistently reliable ones other than OEM. You either go: 1) new OEM (reliable but stupidly expensive) 2) used OEM (reliable and cheap but unknown how much life is left in them) 3) roll the dice on cheap chinesium ones, a third of which won’t last 5,000 miles and another third of which won’t last 20,000 miles. If you have the free time to do the manifold yourself and do it again, and it’s not your only car, and you’re willing to risk plastic/rubber bits going into the motor (think you’ll need a rebuild soon anyway), then I’d roll the dice on a set of off-brand ones.

You could go further and do all the mods I discussed in the video. However, as I mentioned towards the end, I wouldn't go chasing huge power gains with the N52 and you may be better off focusing on other mods like suspension, control arms, etc. I'd personally do a tune, intake manifold, & coilovers to start. E - The mods we've listed. No different across models since it has the same engine.

@@8020Media yeah it has 3 stage intake factory it needs header. and IDK if they are a tune for it. I put sport mode on it myself and that Titans the steering column changes the transmission and I can't find if it gives me more HP seems like it but could be the way it changes the transmission. It has factory air box with k&n filter.

Well, that’s 275 that’s normal throw a turbo or supercharger on it and that shit will be reliable still you won’t blow up the motor unless you’re dumb you don’t know what you’re doing. Could explain why a lot of people say you go n54. Although At max you will probably get up to 500 to 600 to the wheel. On stock internals.

I’m getting code p0015 on my bmw 2011 528i
@8020Media9 ай бұрын
The VANOS solenoids and cam position sensors are two likely culprits of P0015 on the N52. Have you tried cleaning or replacing anything yet? I'd start with cleaning the VANOS solenoids to see if that gets rid of the code. Otherwise, cam position sensors have become more and more common issues as these engines continue aging.

Spud - We can certainly look at doing this in the future. This is a simple mod list. Cams are certainly more complex.

This list + MILVs. Beyond that, you’re into one-off territory and well past the cost-benefit ratio of the N52 platform.
