Watched this video, remembered I had an old band brake in the garage, plugged in my welder and finally made a brake for my mini bike. Thanks! ha. Only bad part is rolling backwards, it likes to grab (possibly because of the direction of wear on the go-kart it was previously used on, because the band would only work good for me placed a certain way). I actually welded a post to the frame instead of mounting a bracket / post to the motor. Silly me wasn't thinking of chain tensioning at the time... oops. Well it works though! little jittery as all band brakes are, going to add a spring tomorrow to keep it more stable during a free roll / coast.

Good video going to get a set of band brakes for my off road lawn mower. And I remembered seeing this video awhile back. Y'all do some really good work on whatever you work on. So thanks all your video's keep them coming. hopefully next week I'll get it done. I think it will work real good about 20 times more brake surface then the little stock disk brake pad's. Their just not make for off road and mud riding.

Picking up a used mini bike tomorrow, I think I'm going to follow your setup. Q- when tightening/adjusting the cable, does it hold the band in place so it won't drag on the drum?

I was thinking that maybe you should flip the band so as the clutch is spinning and the band clamps it would be pulling at the bolt instead of pushing. the brake may work better if it was working with the rotation instead of against it. like self actuating drum brakes on a car.
@805ROADKING

@805ROADKING
@805ROADKING 8 жыл бұрын
+0MARLBC Nah, it's not a stupid question!! There is no forward or backward with the clutch, it will work in either direction!! It depends on how your chain lines up with the rear sprocket, that's how you determine if your clutch teeth face in or out!! The band brake will work either way!!☺

great idea, but i heard of people having to take off the band brake because it would make the clutch so hot that it had to be greased before every ride. does it heat up the clutch or is it working alright for you guys?

@lastotallyawesomebleach204
@lastotallyawesomebleach204 10 жыл бұрын
805ROADKING yeah, either that or they were using the wrong grease, or they were too hard on the brakes, or they had a faulty clutch to begin with. whatever the reason, i'm no longer discouraged to make one of these things.

I woulda flipped that so you were using the bottom mount holes in the shaft side cover. Then woulda made a pedal brake outa rod and metal. Seems like that hand brake would be hard to squeeze? But... if it works why change things. Just thinkin out loud so to speak. :)

Isn't that bad for the clutch
@juliemoon4893
@juliemoon4893 7 жыл бұрын
one would highly doubt that using this for intermittent braking (which stops entirely or almost at least the motion of said clutch drum which cause no more slipping for any longer than riding) would cause more heat than the slipping clutch pads would cause trying to pull an adult with a kids toy.....The last thing I would really be worried about is the clutch not lasting as long. Maybe it rusting...
