80th anniversary of the deportation of Danish Jews to Ghetto Theresienstadt

On April 9, 1940, Nazi Germany invaded Denmark, whose government decided to capitulate
in order to maintain its ruling institutions, and with the promise that no harm would befall
the Jews of Denmark. In August 1943 the Germans declared military rule in Denmark
and planned to deport the Jews for extermination on October 1 and 2, 1943. In a
rescue operation assisted by the Danish underground, 7,200 Danish Jews (94%)
managed to escape to Sweden by boats. 475 Jews were caught by the Germans and
sent to Ghetto Theresienstadt.

ב-9 באפריל 1940 פלשה גרמניה הנאצית לדנמרק, וממשלתה החליטה להכנע כדי לשמור על
מוסדות השלטון, תוך הבטחה שיהודי דנמרק לא ייפגעו. באוגוסט 1943 הכריזו הגרמנים על ממשל
צבאי בדנמרק, ותכננו לשלח את היהודים להשמדה ב-1 וב -2 באוקטובר 1943. במבצע הצלה בסיוע
המחתרת הדנית, הצליחו 7,200 מיהודי דנמרק (94%) לברוח בסירות לשוודיה. 475 יהודים נתפסו
על ידי הגרמנים ונשלחו לגטו טרזיינשטאט.
