#82 Expanded Clay Screed | Renovating our Abandoned Stone House in Italy

We bought this stone house in Italy during the pandemic in 2020. The house was a ruin and we saved everything we could, unfortunately that meant only four stone and clay walls! The back wall, against the terrain, was close to collapse; the roof beams were eaten and basically reduced to dust; the inside separation walls were easily taken down and the whole project turned into a heavy renovation/rebuild.

Love learning about these more efficient and eco friendly building materials. I had hear of the expanded clay for use with pizza ovens, and insulating them. Didn't think of using it fo a floor. Well done. Love seeing the happy dog with the muddy nose too!

While the hemp block is a great insulation, I don’t like its texture. Too bad they can mold the outer surface with a more attractive face.

The hempblocks are made to be coated, with a lime based plaster ideally. The rough surface of the blocks assure a perfect grip for it! We will do it soon ☺️
