I have that same splitter and am pleased with it. I added the optional 4 way wedge which is very easy to take on and off. The side wedges were rather short at about 2" or so and sometimes would have to pull or chop upper and lower pieces apart.. I cut the side wedges off and welded on 5" per side wedges. Works good and completely splits upper and lower. This 4 way really saves time.

Great tip! I have the same set up with the CL 25 ton splitter and a compact diesel tractor with a loader. My only suggestion to you would be to unhook the splitter, spin the tractor around and split directly into the bucket. Save your back anywhere you can.

My splitter has an adjustable rod (for different log lengths). This rod mechanism trips the control lever on the back stroke to stop the ram from cycling all the way back. Make sure you keep your chain out of the dirt Ed. 😊

Yep, they're expensive. I have a cheap electric splitter from Harbor Freight...doesn't seem to be too bad of a splitter for the money, its slow of course because its electric, and it requires 2 handed operation but beats using an axe or wedge and sledge, or splitting maul. I'd love to have one of those fancy expensive splitters but for what they cost and the amount of time that it would sit between uses, electric was the way to go...sure if you are splitting wood every day one of those gas powered 20+ ton splitters would be fine, but I only need a log splitter maybe a few days a year when I get firewood that needs a bit more splitting than will fit in my stove.

This is an interesting idea, definitely worth a try. I have been splitting some large ash with the splitter in the vertical position and I am wondering if you or your followers have a solution for positioning the round and holding it there? The backplate is off the ground, this along with the size of the round makes it difficult to get it into and remain in position for splitting.
@MyClutteredGarage3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Edward. You can build up around that back plate with wood or concrete pavers. I think that would help a lot. Thanks for watching and commenting!

How is this working out Ed. I have tried this myself a few times in the past. My experience….Eventually the block of wood collapses. Also I realized the cleat/ridge at the base had the purpose of keeping the round in place. The challenging pieces would slide off block of wood. So I gave up on the idea. But I am curious how it is working for you and what you have learned.
@MyClutteredGarage2 жыл бұрын
Hey Gerry. Honestly, I haven't used it heavily yet, but so far so good! I think that using the 6x6 in the cross grain position helps. Several people have commented about using cylinder stops. Maybe that would work better for you?

@brianlowe7533 жыл бұрын
Ok good idea and why aren’t you tossing splits onto your County Line carryall ?🤣
@keithrayeski31472 жыл бұрын
So, here’s my penniless observation. This mod was in the interest of saving the couple of seconds for the wedge to contact the wood from fully returned. So we insert a block of wood that now, we have to wait a couple of seconds for the wedge to fully return so we can drop the piece of wood to split,,between the fully retracted wedge and the block of wood? I think I got the math there right?🤪🤣 Now this will presumably speed up the waiting time by moving the wait from the front end to the back end. Keeping in mind that this will speed things up and we all know that if we are working with 24 tons of crushing power between a hard block of wood and a wedge shaped chunk of steel, speed is always better than safe! 😉😁 Not to mention that, if you find yourself into a knot, you may find you are putting that extra crushing force onto a block of wood instead of the steel end plate created and designed for such force. It’s a cool trick but….I’m thinkin I’ll stick to the way I’ve been doing it. Just an observation. 😁👊🏻
