Andy, That was a lovely and obviously heartfelt tribute to Mellissa and the work she does. You are indeed a lucky man to have a partner who is so in tune with the idea of moving aboard Melody and sailing the world! It is a huge undertaking and lifestyle change. Everything you do Andy is one step towards realising your family dream. No matter how small the step you make is, it’s one thing less for Melissa to do. She’s a very positive lady and she has a drive that isn’t often seen. Good luck with the house and the radicalising of its contents. Really enjoyed this episode and look forward to seeing you all aboard again.

I don’t know it’s strange isn’t it, sometimes it stays and sometimes not. I have a feeling it’s maybe got something to do with mobile phones because if I put a thumbs up on a video from my laptop or desktop computer it’s there for good but when i do it on my phone sometimes i find it’s gone when I re visit the videos.

your choice for the interior ply is perfectly adequate imo. it will last a long time. the difference for marine plywood is the amount of voids within the sheets and the glue, which is not waterproof but water resistant. people have built hulls with exterior grade plywood and never had a problem because they knew what they were doing.

Andy, You are doing a great job on the panels. To make them last, after the stain has dried really well if you seal the wood with 2 coats of epoxy on all sides and edges, there's no reason they won't last a very long time. The edges, just like the end grain of any wood will soak up a lot so a few extra coats on the edges till it doesn't soak in would be extra insurance. If there are any voids along the edge fill those with thickened epoxy. With all of this work you'll still be cheaper than marine plywood an even marine ply would needs to be sealed to keep it from absorbing moisture from the air, moulding and/or rotting. Keep up the Great Work!!

"It is what it is" you said in closing. That is so true. I put that on a sign over my work area and my manager hated it. I told him to stop making promises that we would get complex work done in a short time. He really didn't know what had to be solved first. None of my work was straight foreword. Boat work has many complications to sort out before you get to work on the real problem. Keep going.
@SailingMelody2 жыл бұрын
Precisely :) each problems takes as long as it takes 🤷🏼♂️ And from a KZbin point of view I’d rather just make honest videos which show our progress and sometimes that’s more impressive and other times it’s not so impressive but it’s more honest than making up bullshit to to make an episode appear more interesting 😂😂😂

Andy, Melissa, and Jack, I love watching your progress, learning, and the boat come together. You guys are doing a great job. I support your assessment of needs vs looks. I live in the Pacific Northwest, Puget Sound, and know folks who have spent years and thousands of $ outfitting for a circumnav, and on boats that never leave the dock.The goal is to sail, live an adventure, and create memories, not build a shrine. That said you are on the right track. One suggestion I would offer is that I would seal the plywood, not sure after your experiment with the stain that I would bother with the vinyl, looks good from here!

You are indeed very lucky having a partner willing to share all the experience and you gave a heartfelt tribute, well done! Just a small point you are probably aware of, don't forget to trim some wood off the panels to allow for the vinyl wrap over, I suggest you try some when you get the vinyl to check how much you need to allow. Looking much better now and will improve dramatically with the vinyl. Keep up the good work, spring is on the way!

I would recommend using G4 damp seal to seal the exterior grade ply. Its super easy to apply and gives a hardwearing finish. Its also cheap but will make your panels last considerably longer.

Hi Andy what you are doing is very good I would suggest you coat all the wood/ply in something just like you wood treatment, your timber will last a lot longer even if covered afterwards

@wildandbarefoot2 жыл бұрын
On the marine ply front, a lot of 70s boats were made of it but they only used it for the hull and topsides and used affordable ply inside. It will last longer than you think. It's all about sealing the wood. Don't fret.
@mikshepherd2 жыл бұрын
Great job Andy! Those panels are looking amazing. I used to work in a panel laminating company so have some experience with plywood. The difference between the wbp and marine is the adhesive more than anything. The marine uses a totally waterproof adhesive to prevent delaminating in wet conditions. For inside the boat, although it might be ‘best practice’ to use the marine, if you seal the edges with a marine varnish, it should make the ply last a lot longer if not indefinitely… also, I think the camper idea is great, and downsizing is tricky enough, you don’t need the added pressure of getting the boat done at the same time. You’ll be able to expand into the boat from the camper so it will feel luxurious! Keep up the great work mate!!

I have just binge-watched all of your episodes and love this channel. You are indeed a lucky man to have such a capable partner in this venture. I too have seawater in my veins and would love to do just what you're doing. But my wife is vehemently against boats and the only way I'll ever get one is if it's given to me. Living in Louisiana, with water everywhere you look, I yearn for the life of a mariner, but that may not be in the cards for me. So, hope you don't mind me living vicariously through you and your family by way of your videos. Thank you, great work, and much luck on your adventure.

Wonderful words from you regarding the ‘team’,they certainly appear to enjoy the tasks even when you’ve not been there! Re the Marine ply versus Exterior grade (WBP ?); I’m more than happy to stand corrected but it was always my understanding that the only real difference between the two types was laminate quality. BS 1088 Mahogany ply had a guaranteed laminate lay up with no voids whereas the exterior grade WBP, whilst utilising the same glues etc, when cut was likely to show voids in the layup. Long & short of it is there really shouldn’t be any problems using the exterior stuff for panelling. I don’t suppose for a minute that you’d achieve Lloyds Approval for the exterior (especially for any structural elements) but don’t forget that Peter & Annie Hill built the original ‘Badger’ entirely from exterior grade and, to my knowledge, never experienced any issues. Keep up the great work!!!
@louwilliams85282 жыл бұрын
As a former professional wood worker I have an input on your inside wood choices. The major difference between exterior ply and the marine grade is price. They use the same glue and wood. Marine grade guarantees no voids and that is very important if you are using it for structural reasons. You can get exterior grade with the same ply’s and thickness For trim I would never spend the money for a name. Good job

New to your channel but really enjoyed the 16 month time lapse and few more of the videos. For your hardwood ply. As long as you can seal all the surfaces, (paint etc) there is no real reason it will not last the lifetime of the boat. So the biggest thing about sea air is the moisture containing salt. If the The salt water/moisture can impregnate the wood it can swell and break apart the layers. Your best bet is to get a good heater and dry out the panels for a couple of days and then paint/seal them, make sure any holes that you need are already done before sealing as they will be weak points.
@SailingMelody2 жыл бұрын
Yeah definitely. Although we’ve spent so little on the timber for these panels it won’t matter if they don’t last too long and we can use them as templates for something better in the future when the welding work is all complete

Andy, those deck head panels are good enough to finish with paint surely? I built a garden room recently and lined the interior with the same Far Eastern ply, then painted with primer/emulsion, the result is excellent. You could do the same, especially as you intend covering the joints with trim. In fact I think it’s a much more modern looking finish than vinyl and a lot less troublesome - think Westerly headlining! Rob

Hi Andy. When you decide to coveryou panel in the vinyl don't forget to allow at leasr 3/16"on each dimension to allow for the cladding thickness of the vinyl. l only just remembered when doing the headlining on my late boat, It does save a lot of mucking about after glueing the vinyl onto the panels if the trimming is done first. I used a spray adhesive I used a PVA type with no fumes, can't remember the name of it but it gave some time for small adjustments. Beware too that if a curved section you need to allow a fraction more vinyl to stop it stretching when curved and flattening appearance.. Starting to really look the business aboard Melody .Welldone !
@SailingMelody2 жыл бұрын
We’ve used both spray and tinned contact adhesive and found the canned stuff far superior. You can get a much more even covering of adhesive on both the timber and the fabric. It does smell but the results are much better

I think long term I would mold some grp and gelcoat and then fit and forget. It would reflect much more light easily washable and when you get to the tropics gel is far more resilient than vinyl in humidity and extreme heat. The other reason is every time you turn something on, you need battery capacity and re-charge facility.

If you seal the plywood it will last as long as marine plywood. Marine plywood is so expensive because it's made with no interior voids. Otherwise besides the number of plys it's basically the same as exterior plywood. You will be fine if you seal it .

Yes, make sure you seal both sides. One side only will mean that they distort when they get damp, and they will get damp. Stain is not a sealer. Good work, all of you.

Can I suggest drill a hole in the centre of the plate as you suggest but only the plate not the Hull. Then plug the hole with weld, you will get a much stronger hold and you won't have yet another hole in the Hull (even though its plugged with a welded bolt) Check with nigel he will know best.
