why does the round piece in the middle of the scale have side to side movement as i seen the whole thing slide to your left when you tested the very first knife and that would fuddle the scale weight given wouldn't it ?????

I have the same model. I tested a single sided razor blade and got 211 the first time and 277 the second time. So my numbers are higher. I sharpened a knife using a TSPROF Pro and my numbers were 240 to 300 after about 15 tests on the same knife. The numbers vary quite a bit.

Thank you for taking the time and effort (and expense) to take this device through its paces for the KZbin audience. There is nothing basically wrong with your attempts to test. It’s not your fault that the device itself pretends to be more than it actually is. In truth, anyone can stretch a piece of line between two posts attached to a plug sitting in the middle of a scale, and the set a padded fulcrum off to one side, and get the same results for the price of a scale and some junk around the shop. If that string “media” is truly calibrated they will have test results, by manufacturing lot, but that still would not solve the other problems: how to make every test have the same tension on the string, the need to test at several places along each blade, and to make sure the blade is perpendicular to the string. Finally, no electronic scale is truly calibrated without a standard test weight to accompany it for regular re-tests. To me the basic failure is trying to make sharpness the exact test of the usefulness of a blade, when in fact blades of varying sharpness can be useful in many tasks. I know that often I degrade my tiny pocket knives because it is too easy to get a small cut when they are razor sharp. My hunting knife is sharp, but not razor sharp, to make it more useful for heavy field work - which is why it has a ¼”+ backbone. My medium lock back pocket knives are razor sharp because they are for box cutting and other work which requires a very sharp blade. It would be useless for me to own this device to test blade sharpness, as long as I have thumbs.

For $260 it ought to be great. As Ammo Alamo said at greater length, it seems like a lot of money for a gram scale with peak hold and a few simple attachments to hold the thread. Give it a couple of months and some Chinese company will copy it and sell it for $50.

All knives in my experience have different angles but if your looking for a great edge after sharpening stroke your edge on a leather strop. Strop is spelled correctly.

You don't need to wind the medium. Just put it in the slot, and tighten it down. Much easier.

Why wouldn't I just buy the ATF20C Test Fixture and use my kitchen scale? I don't care about BESS standards, just getting the lowest weight.
