87 Years Among Wolves and Bears: The Legendary Shepherd of the Carpathians

Mykhailo Panets, an 87-year-old shepherd, has dedicated his entire life to herding sheep on the picturesque Carpathian slopes. Since his youth, he worked in the collective farms, milking sheep alongside other shepherds and crafting traditional cheeses. His journey as a shepherd wasn’t easy-he often had to defend his flock from wolves and bears that attacked.
Today, Mykhailo still cares for his farm, which includes 70 sheep, 30 goats, a cow, a horse, pigs, and chickens. He handles it all by himself, with occasional help from his son, while his grandson looks up to him, inspired by his dedication to this demanding life. Kind-hearted, cheerful, and tireless, he embodies the true spirit of a Carpathian shepherd.
This documentary tells the story of a man for whom nature, hard work, and love for animals have become his life’s mission.

This is so AMAZING 😢 reminds me of my grandparents who lived a necessary lifestyle. I remember waking up 4am to hear them working in the large vegetable gardens and feeding the smaller number of animals. ☀️🥕🥒🫑🥚 It was a daily chore but perfect rhythm to an AUTHENTIC LIFE. 🪴🌺

It's not Belarus. Belarus doesn't have mountains. It's Carpathian Mountains. Assuming from poor description Ukrainian part, however Ukraine and Rusyns related people live also in Polish, Slovak and Romanian part and farther.

Aujourd'hui, les cheminées des datchas (maisons anciennes en bois) fument pratiquement tous, pas un bruit, les dernières grives litornes se sont rassemblées, sous des pommiers pour manger avant le départ, car le froid arrive. Mes chats (26) sont à la maison, dans leurs chambres ou blottis proches de la cheminée. Je leurs ai acheté pour un mois de nourriture. Il fait 23 degrés dans ma datchas. C'est superbe de voir la neige tomber sur ce minuscule village, qui paraît surgir du passé (des années 50 voir plus). Pas une voiture. Maintenant je mange des noix, prêt de la cheminée, je me nourris uniquement des produits de mon jardin, que j'ai stoqué à la cave, pour manger cet hiver. A bientôt.

All the cats are abandoned, neglected cats or cats that are taken to the countryside thinking that they will feed on mice or birds and that the owners will find them in the spring, close to their country houses. I spend each month on cat food, more than €350, on care about €300, because when one is sick (for example eye infection) it transmits this disease to the others... I bought a house with a large plot of land for them, I am going to enclose this land with a 1.80 m sheet metal fence so that they cannot escape, I am going to have small houses built so that they can sleep in the summer. What I lack is money for food. I am retired and more than 40% of my pension money goes to my cats that I adore. If anyone would like to sponsor one or more of my cats, that would be great.
