I had the exact same problem in my Comanche. Harmonic balancer chewing on the timing cover. A pretty easy fix to be honest, all I had to take off was the front skid plate to access the front. You don't even need to remove the rad or fan or anything if you do it from underneath. Keep the Cherokee videos coming, they have been very helpful to me.

I had a lot of the same issues and did a lot of the fixes you’ve done. I have a 1990 and it is in perpetual being fixed mode, but I love my Heep.

I appreciate the tip but I'd rather fix the problem then cover it up. Later on I found out the Harmonic Balancer slipped off the hub and was rubbing against the timing cover which misaligned the whole pulley system. The rubbing and misalignment caused that awful shrieking sound.

My squeaking came from the waterpump . Which eventually led to complete failure in the middle of nowhere 2hrs from home coming back from the beach fishing. It sprayed coolant threw the serp belt into oblivion and left me stranded. I ended up changing the water pump out there and I got new idler pulleys and H.balancer runs good finally
@paulnunya34296 жыл бұрын
Mine did this crap, I finally had to replace the harmonic balancer and learned that these things like the belt tension pretty tight. No more squeakzilla.
@paulnunya34296 жыл бұрын
To see if it’s an accessory bearing or a pulley/ belt surface you can spray a little water on each pulley one at a time to help find the culprit.

From what I remember it ran ok. I don't think it had a leak per say, everything was plugged, it just wasn't going to the right place. I would assume it ran better afterwards...

When you turn the A/C on does it change at all? I'm fighting the same issue. I just replaced the Alt, and previously I replaced the P/S pump. Steve
@NickInTimeFilms10 жыл бұрын
My issue was a badly worn harmonic balancer (Crankshaft Pulley.) The outer ring slipped off the inner ring and started rubbing against my timing cover causing the squeal. A new harmonic balancer got rid of all the noise. If your belt starts to squeal with the A/C on then your belt is loose. The A/C compressor takes a lot of force to spin when activated so if it only makes noise with the A/C on, tighten up your belt, like a lot. Cherokees like their belts a little tighter than most cars.

Rub baby power on the rib side of the belt. It will stop the crank pulley squeak. I did this on my 97 F150 to fix it.

Didn't not having that vacuum harness on cause a giant vacuum leak? Did the jeep run rough at all?

Did you have oil build up in your vacuum lines and in your air box and thats why you replaced them? I have that issue and want to know
@NickInTimeFilms8 жыл бұрын
+Galvanized City Later on I started getting oil in the airbox, it's called oil blowby. If you're Vacuum lines or pcv are clogged then it may be causing issues and replacing them may help, but usually this is an indication that your piston rings are starting to wear out.
@galvanizedcity49818 жыл бұрын
+NickInTimeFilms The jeep has 152,XXX does that sound right for the piston rings to start to go bad? I just recently picked it up and did a valve cover gasket to it then I realized when i went to go reattach the front vacuum line it had a yellowish blackish oil build up on the end of it. I really dont want to tear apart the engine is there anything i can do to make sure it is that before i start a teardown? ( i am new to jeeps, and it is a 89)
@NickInTimeFilms8 жыл бұрын
+Galvanized City 152k is a little early for the jeep 4.0ls but if it hasn't been taken care of it's entirely possible. Worn piston rings will cause weak compression so you can do a compression test to see what shape your engine is in. I have a video on that here kzbin.info/www/bejne/fISwkn9nqrmDp5o
@galvanizedcity49818 жыл бұрын
+NickInTimeFilms all the fluids are fresh in it when i bought it and physically its in pretty good condition. But who knows if its been redlined at all or abused like that. It does have a class 3 hitch from factory so maybe it was used to tow alot. I will definitely try getting my hands on a compression tester and i will get back to you and see what you think. I dont know anyone that knows older jeeps like this better than what you have shown in your videos. Thank you
@galvanizedcity49818 жыл бұрын
+NickInTimeFilms video helped and you would never believe this but it was someone purposely sabotaged the engine by plugging the pcv. Did a compression test and the engine is mint. Im glad i caught the sabotage early and didnt blow more valve cover gaskets just to figure out it was a plug where it didnt belong. Thank you for responding and helping me out.

silicone spay works great for a temporally fix. That shit they sell to quite your belts is garbage, Had a belt start to squeal half way to California from chicago, a guy at a auto part store told me to use silicone spray thought i would pass it on.
@NickInTimeFilms8 жыл бұрын
+Ron Stark If silicone spray helps quite the belt then you either have a worn belt, worn tensioner, or something offset or seizing up. My issues wasn't actually belt related, the harmonic balancer slipped of the hub and was rubbing my timing cover.

I get most of my parts from Rockauto.com. Vacuum harness is made by Dorman, comes in two halfs. Front: DORMAN Part # 46003 {#53004838} Rear: DORMAN Part # 46004 {#53004868} These parts may be different for your newer model though

My 89 starts with no key too, how can I fix that ? I'm afraid someone will drive it away
@NickInTimeFilms7 жыл бұрын
Well you're in for a fun adventure if you want to replace the ignition cylinder. You'll need a whole new cylinder which comes with a new key and you have to rip apart a good bit of the steering wheel to get at it. My loose steering column video can give you an idea of what it takes to get inside, but there might be videos dedicated just to the ignition cylinder replacement online

I have a question when I start my 89 xj it keeps smoking out exhaust what can it be
@NickInTimeFilms7 жыл бұрын
+Joe Baca hmm, well it depends, what color smoke and under what conditions. White smoke is usually moisture from a cold start or the engine burning coolant. Blue smoke is usually from the engine burning oil. Black smoke is usually unburned fuel from it running rich. Someone driving behind out may be able to smell what it could be too
@joebaca10197 жыл бұрын
NickInTimeFilms well it's blue actually
@joebaca10197 жыл бұрын
NickInTimeFilms if that's the case is that bad that engine is burning oil
@NickInTimeFilms7 жыл бұрын
+Joe Baca Then it sounds like you are burning oil. The most common cause is worn piston rings which allow combustion pressure into the crank case. This creates something called blow by, where that pressure pushes oil vapor into the vacuum lines and then that will partially burn out the tail pipe. You'd need to re-ring the pistons to fix that if it was your issue. A compression test could confirm if weak rings were the issue

+T.O.P MIDDLE TN What year? Does it sound like all cylinders or just one? Does it happen all the time, or only when cold or under load or anything like that? I would check the basics, make sure you're o2 sensor is good, plugs, wires and distributor are good, make sure you have good, clean fuel at the rail, no air restrictions and clean air filter.
@mora8508 жыл бұрын
+NickInTimeFilms it's mostly when cold and in feel like it wants to stall in drive or reverse. Did a full tune up everything good no exhaust leaks nothing just a misfire cyl 1. Exhaust sounds like it's popping from the miss. The jeep ran fine and like overnight it started... The rotor and button and cap was all replaced.injector one was too.. I just don't want to take it to the steelership... Nice stroker motor btw she still running good??
@NickInTimeFilms8 жыл бұрын
+T.O.P MIDDLE TN The exhaust manifold isn't leaking or anything is it? Sometimes an exhaust leak sounds like a misfire, and once it warms up it seals. The Stroker is running great, I think it runs a little rich at first start up but it's great after about a minute. Love the crap out of it.
