Its not hard to perfect your feline skills. Just catch a few felines, line em up in a row. Pull each tail and see what note they generate. Re-arrange the cats so they form a perfect scale, and start playing. Bonus points if you can make em play automatically by feeding an arduino a midi sequence, triggering solenoids to pull the tails ;)

Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. I really loved to see the SA-9. It looks identical to the SA-1 I owned as a kid, back in the 80's. Even the sound when you select another instrument is the same. I bet that this one does not have the awesome "wake me up before you go-go" demo tune. :)

If you are watching this in the future, there are some good travel pianos now, that are actually playable and very affordable. You gotta look into the Yamaha PSS series from 2020. $50-60 dollars new. There are 3 models available: PSS F30, A50, and E30 (Remie). They are getting harder to find, because of the supply shortages, but they are definitely worth grabbing. I think they will return production again in the future though. I was able to find one for $45 from someone off facebook. The keybed is the same as on the Yamaha reface series, and layout/sounds are modeled after the full sized Yamaha PSR series. For a $50 keyboard, it packs a punch in such a small travel-friendly package. I can now play or practice wherever I want to go.

Sounds like Technobeat wasn't ending old notes to make room for new ones, so it was hitting its 7-note polyphony limit even after you let go of the keys, since it was waiting for the note to finish fading out. I have a nexxtech keyboard with 7-note polyphony and it will end old notes to make room for new ones, even if I am still holding the key down. Fairly interesting.

I had a toy keyboard back in the day, in the 2000’s. It was great! It had all the notes of a proper keyboard, all the notes a piano has at least, and had switches to let it synthesise numerous different instruments. I still own it, it runs off of AA batteries, and sounds really good to be honest. My favourite part about it is how it has red LCDs in all of the keys, which light up when the key is pressed and it comes with loads of songs which you can select. There’s a switch that toggles if you want it to play the song, or just give directions. If it’s set to play the song, then it plays the song and lights up the keys, but if it’s set to off then it just lights up the keys silently so you can play the song with it! It’s really cool in my opinion. It had loads of other features too like tone controls and metronomes and loads of other stuff. I had a lot of fun with it as a kid. Although I am terrible at playing, using the pre-recorded songs for practise and the song directions I was able to make some good songs. The keyboard also had proper beat/rhythm control that let you choose from many beats and rhythms and then customise them too, even meaning your own from scratch, and then you could choose the sound it’d use for the beat/rhythm, or you could make it silent and have the keys light up.. I also have some good memories of using the feature it had that let you record a song to replay later. It was brilliant fun to me as a child, and I expect I could break it out of the loft and use it as a proper keyboard. I remember my dad telling me at around that age that most toy keyboards are basically just normal keyboards, albeit somewhat simplified, and that mine was better than most in that aspect. I’ve also got to give it some props for having normal sized keys, and having the ability to play many keys at once and even record your voice to go along with the song. It was well worth the tiny price of about 30 early 2000’s pounds, if I remember rightly.

I have to admit, I really enjoyed this episode for a latecomer to the channel, but I was a tiny bit let down that I didn't get to see the insides of the last cheap 'junky keyboard', as well as anything successfully played on either of the last 2. I also understand though. I'm sure you spend enough time on producing these shows for us. I had bought myself a Yamaha YPG235 a few years ago and was determined to learn how to play it for the first few months I had it, but looking back now I wish I had aimed a little lower, like that Casio SA-9. I think I would have been a little bit less intimidated by it. I also wish I would have found this channel back then as well.

@8-Bit Keys: What capacitor value did you use for the Meowsic line out and why? I'm a circuit bender and whenever I've had to do a line out mod, I've only added a resistor or pot in series with the circuit to take the volume down, if needed. What's the benefit iof adding a cap and how do you determine which value to use?

A A Id also really love to know this! I’m making some upgrades to a Casio DG 10 and want to get some tips for quality
@ddcddc_5 жыл бұрын
I'd be very much happy to answer that question. So, a capacitor, put it in simple words, allows AC to pass through while blocking DC. So, if your audio signal has a DC bias in it, you can connect a capacitor in series, so that the DC doesn't "screw up" the circuit or introduce distortion in the signal chain. The value can be calculated based on what pot you're using. Look for "RC high pass filter calculator" or some shit like that. TL; DR: the cap blocks DC voltage and its value depends on the pot you're using, but you can usually go for 10uF and be happy, but frequency response might not be ideal.

Just wanted to say I use to binge your 8 bit guy videos once in a while way back in 2015ish, since than. I picked up the guitar got really serious, joining bands and stuff, and wanted to learn how to read. Eventually resorted to learning the piano instead. Cause I reasoned it be easier to learn how to play the piano and read then learning to read in the guitar. Ended up getting serious on the piano too, playing excerpts of Chopin and trying a few pop/indie songs. However since the only time I can use a real piano is when I go over to my friends or families houses. I spend most of my time practicing on two crappy old second hand keyboards. One of which just broke. But now that I rediscovered Ur channel and have bought a soldering iron(for guitar mods), I can't wait to get into fixing and possibly modifying my keys. Sorry for the essay just wanted to say u and Ur channels r cool.

I recognize that Technobeat keyboard. I was 10 when I got it back in Christmas 2007. I don't remember what happened to it, though. I think it stopped working after about 2 or 3 years and it got thrown out.

does the demo key of the SA9 play "Wake me up before you go go"? besides the missing headphone jack and slightly different key layout it seems similar to a casio toy I had in the early 90s
@luisneitzke1067 жыл бұрын
As I just mentioned in a comment, it's the SA-1 all over again! That's the keyboard you had! :)
@tomaskot92787 жыл бұрын
Yea, I also used to have the SA-1 (in fact, I STILL have it), which looks exactly the same (different color - mine was blue,) and has also only 2 voice polyphony, which is a big problem IMHO, because you cannot progress above a one-hand playing skill. SA-1 has the headphone jack.
@olik1367 жыл бұрын
as the true idiot I am- and was- I threw it away years ago because the speaker was broken...
@luisneitzke1067 жыл бұрын
Tomáš Kot Yeah, the SA-1 was released in many colors and in two or so different boxes (the first ones are the ones in the blue box, with the "rad" 90's font, then in '92 they replaced it with a box featuring those kid cartoons that Casio was using around the time). Of course the polyphony is horrible, but they recycled the SA sounds in many keyboards, including the MA and CA series (and 90's PT models), some of them even featuring what sounds like a higher sample rate, so if you really enjoy it you can search one of those for a bit better polyphony! :)
@luisneitzke1067 жыл бұрын
Oli K Well, you shouldn't worry - SA keyboards are very cheap these days (for a good reason), so you can always get another one!
