Local angler Bob gets his 2024 season up and running.
A steady 15mph upstream (easterly) wind, made it difficult to cast right across the stream and made the air feel bitterly cold, even though it registered 7 degrees. The water temperature never budged from 7 degrees but it too felt much colder, especially when I was filming the release!
Catching spring salmon in such cold conditions is definitely not for the faint hearted but as you can see in the video, the rewards are right at the top of the 'Scottish salmon' tree.
Fresh from the sea, their dogged resilience and raw power, tests every aspect of your gear. From the reel, all the way through to the tippet and ultimately, the hook, which in this case, was a Partridge nordic hook single, size 6.
Surely everyone loves to catch a springer?

Cracking fish Cameron, and what looks like another cold wind. Is there no letting up off these Easterly storms it's one after the other. When are we going to get some spring weather, but the fish are going through so keep at it Cameron and wrap up warm. Its hard work being a gillie out in all weathers. Look forward to the next one.
