16lb salmon caught on the fly | Dochfour | salmon fishing Scotland 2023 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

What a fish! Absolutely pristine example of a Scottish Highland Springer, straight off the tide. I have known and Ghillie'd for visiting angler Michael for many years and we have enjoyed some spectacular tussles with salmon, across the Highlands of Scotland. The dramatic background story to this phenomenal scrap, only became apparent to us after Michael had hooked this silver torpedo and fine shavings from the line's plastic coating, began fizzing out from the top eye of the rod, like fine wood shavings from a Turner’s lathe. A crack in the ceramic liner had produced a razor sharp edge which continuously stripped the surface coating from the line, every time that Michael reeled the line back onto the spool. Often, the strain that the fish put on the line, resulted in the sharp edge of the eye digging into the line, preventing it from being wound in at all. Michael made a fantastic job of keeping the rod well bent, to maintain the maximum pressure on the fish, whilst at the same time, changing the angles, to prevent the razor sharp edge from cutting through the line or the tippet. Definitely not for the feint of heart! Happy days ;)
