Hey Mark. What a great call.. Over 10k comments and you're the first one to mention Run of the Mill. I know the song well but I totally forgot about it and the fact that it uses a 12 string. All Things Must Pass really is amazing although if George had made it a single album it would be a contender for the best Beatles solo album. It still is, but there is some filler. Band On the Run is near perfect although I don't think anything can trump John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. What would be your pick? I'm thrilled my favorite band YES made the list and your version was spot on. I remember going to concerts in the late 60s where Steve did it on an electric 12-string. Hey BB. You mean sad because of the tragic end of Delps life? I recently watched the local news report where they interviewed a couple of his neighbors that had no idea that he was famous. Amazing vocals for sure. One other interesting thing I recently found out. The story about just about every record company passing is a fallacy. Right from Tom's mouth: he put "about 30" cassettes in an envelope and heard back from 8! The fact that ANY of the 30 didnt just throw the package away is a miracle. I bet the 8 that responded were the 8 that listened. And I believe 3 were interested. To me its quite the opposite if the myth. Anybody that heard it may not have wanted to sign them right away but they knew it was good! Have a great weekend. Mark

Great video, here. Wow! The memories of that decade came flooding in. Becoming a teenager, Watergate, the fall of Saigon, the Bicentennial, polyester, Tommy, the wreck fo the Edmund Fitzgerald, high school graduationd and more. I had an uncle who was a retired Great Lakes freighter captain and knew the captain of the Fitzgerald. This is kind of macabre, but the crew is still down there on the ship, minus one (he was ejected from the ship and is lying on the lake bed) all nearly perfectly preserved due to the fact that the water at that depth rarely goes above freezing. At any reate, the 70s produced some legendary music.

My brother loved trucks and had posters of 18 wheelers on his wall. He loved the song Convoy and the movie...with Kris Kristofferson. I was born in the 70s but I do remember them.....and I have the bad haircut to prove I was there! Thanks again for all of the support! It's appreciated SO MUCH. -Mark

@@8MinuteAxe Thanks Mark. In 1968 I was in 10th grade at school. I worked at a steak house as a waiter after school to save for my guitar. Both my 6 string and 12 string are “Aria” guitars made in Japan. I still have both of these and a Washburn nylon. My electric is a Strat which I bought 5 years ago. My latest addition is the awesome new Spark amp which at 68 years old has got me going again! Rock on! 😎
@8MinuteAxe3 жыл бұрын
I need to tell you about a remarkable coincidence. I've been planning Friday's video today and I've been thinking about doing a video on the Spark. I want to go as far as saying 'The Spark: Is it the Best Amp of All Time?'. My thinking is that an amps primary purpose should be to inspire to PLAY and to CREATE. The Spark has me playing my electric twice as much because of the convenience of having it on my desk. The backing tracks are great. The sounds are incredible. If you have time check out my EVH Grammys snub video. I play my five favorite VH riffs at the end. You won't believe how close on got the the sound on each using the Spark. I've been going back and forth about doing it this week and title but I think your comment has pushed me over the top! I remember the early 80s when Aria were one of the cheaper decent guitars. Now they are coveted as some of the best guitars to come out of Japan. My best friend had a beautiful Aria Les Paul that I used to gig with a lot. Great guitar. Thanks so much for the reply. -Mark

Awesome list!!! Full of classics! And the best part is that you flew under Henley's radar!! That takes skills 😎 A song you missed that is also a really good example of a 12 string played at it's full potential is Deja Vu by CSNY. But still, great list and great video, Mark!! Peace ✌🏼
@8MinuteAxe3 жыл бұрын
Love Deja Vu. And I feel like I've been here before. I think Carry On may be a 12 too... So much to choose from in the 70s.

The 12 string seemed to be a bit of a gimmick that producers used in the 70s to give songs a bigger sound. And when they didn't have access to a 12 string they would use a 6 string in Nashville tuning, which is what I thought they used in Wild Horses.
@8MinuteAxe3 жыл бұрын
Hey David. Wild Horses definitely has a Nashville tuned guitar on it. I believe there are three. Standard, 12, and Nashville. The Nashville and 12 are both in open G....I think. I'm pretty sure you've seen my cover of Wild Horses but here's the link (this is one of my best covers and the ONLY cover I've done on here that I actually mixed and mastered) kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6S2eIB_oLBpfc0. Don Henley's spider senses have been tingled but he's not sure why!
@8MinuteAxe3 жыл бұрын
Have you seen my video Don Henley vs Rick Beato? In the opening, I summarize all the spoofs I've done on him: he beats me up for 11 cents in one, I sell my soul to him at the crossroads in another, and I find a secret hidden message in dirty laundry in a third. They're in three separate videos but I tied them all together in the Beato one. I can send you the link if you're interested. Paul- Henley claimed my original 12 string video that got 300k views. I play 10 songs and only a snippet of HC and he didnt even share (that's what I usually get if it's just a riff and not a full cover). The video made him (et al) almost $2000. Hes worth $230 million. I'm worth $230. I could have used the money more than him. Lol. Have a great weekend guys, I appreciate your time! Mark

Some tough choices Mark but I wouldn't argue with no's 1 and 2! The Yes tune brought back some memories for me of when I went to visit my kid sister who was studying at Manchester University. When I arrived she told me we're going to see Yes so we hopped on a bus and headed off to somewhere in the middle of nowhere where the band was performing in a huge indoor cattle market! They were just little dots in the distance but the gig was great anyway! I never realised so many great songs were played on a 12-string!

Hey Phillip. What a great story. BY FAR the best part of doing this channel are all of the amazing stories viewers tell me. I'm getting the real history of music that you can't get in a book. To stay in the theme, it would have been interesting to use 70's twelve strings guitars. Guild of course, Martin or lbanez.. . The 12 strings Taylor has a very contemporary sound.

Was ELP Lucky Man on a 12 string?
@8MinuteAxe Жыл бұрын
Sure was Terry. It's one of my fav songs but just two chords doesnt make for a great part. I do plenty of ELP in my videos. From the Beginning, still you turn me on, discuss their adaptation of Aarom Copeland. Father Christmas. I could do three top 10s from the 70s and still omit some classics. Genesis - The Cinema Show featured both an acoustic 12 string with an alternate tuning as well as an electric 12 string doing chugging rhythm guitar. You could also point to the beginning of Supper's Ready with some gorgeous interweaving 12-string acoustics. This is definitely a solid list though.

Hey Ed. Funny story. I was in the process of making a follow up to this video and I recorded the 12 string part to Hard Luck Woman. After I finished I thought, I'm going to cut out When the Levee Breaks and The Song Remains the Same for this crap. I have to agree with you. Kiss was all marketing. Bob Ezrin managed to pull them together for one solid album (Destroyer). Besides that, they should be a footnote. Thanks for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and your comment. Hopefully, they don't sick the Kiss Army on us! Mark

Hey Christopher. I don't doubt it. I learned my lesson over the years. Now, any kind of countdown or list video has a very short (usually 45 seconds or less) lead and it's always at least 80% playing, usually more. Thanks for the constructive feedback and thanks for checking out the video. Take care. Mark

Stairway was on a Harmony 12-string. And you left out Supertramp, who had many 12-string hits including Give a Little Bit. My first introduction to 12-string was Ten Years After, Alvin Lee on "I'd Love To Change The World", and the definitive 12-string player - no NOT Kottke - Pat Metheny's "New Chataqua" and "Group" albums.

Sir, I deleted the snide comment as you are correct. You did say the songs of the 70's. I sincerely apologize for saying what I did. It was thoughtless and I hope you will forgive me. I gave you a thumbs up as you are an excellent and talented guitar player. The Bon Jovi riff was excellent and I thought I was listening to Bon Jovi or "The Deadliest Catch" as they used that song for their TV program. Cheers from eastern TN

I'll be turning 70 soon and have been playing since 1962 but I've only had two 12 stringers, one was an Ibanez acoustic the other a Rickenbacker 330 12 but as usual I should have kept both of them. Now that song by Matt Mofitt, Short note Short Note has inspired to get a 12 stringer.

Until I stupidly sold my Mitchell's 12-string because I was in a bind, I should have just suffered with the bind and just kept my guitar because I was learning a lot of stuff on that 12 string and the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was one of the songs I was able to play and I sold the freaking guitar I'm kicking myself in the ass for it. everytime I hear that song I always get emotional when I listen to it can't help it
