Darwin Gutierrez They're both very different and you're entitled to like what you like. I love Sia's damaged-sounding cracks too, but I also love Sara's crystal-clear tone and resonance. And keep in mind she's singing this live with only a ukulele for accompaniment which is SO risky--nowhere to hide if she hits a bad note. But she doesn't. :)

@MjYosh

Francisco Silveira Off course I heard Sia's live version. She is amazing. Not saying SIa sang it better than Sara because their versions have their own appeals. Sia is one of the few artists, along with Sara Barreilles, who sound better and more amazing live.

I was debating if she’s playing a ukulele, so I looked it up!! Answer is from Google. (Yeah, I’m weird like that!!) What is bigger than a ukulele but smaller than a guitar? A baritone ukulele is larger than a tenor ukulele and is tuned a fifth lower. ... This gives it a sound that is perfect for musicians who want a sound a little higher pitched than a guitar but not quite as high pitched as a smaller ukulele.

To the videographer, the reason this video has 2.3 million hits in such a short time is because it's fucking awesome. Everyone that sees it shows it to a few of their friends....because it's fucking awesome. The performance is so good it easily transcends the shitty cell phone camera it was captured on, THAT's how you get 2.3 million hits. I am amazed at how many negative comments are below, all this horseshit about how the key is lowered etc...whatever. Sia's original is in C#. When Sia herself does it live she lowers it a whole step to B. Sara does it in C, right in between Sia's two keys. Singers are worse than guitar players, everyone thinks they can do it better....and yes, the chords she's playing are correct.

+Heather L. You may be right, but what made you believe 501 chorusecho is a man? But what I picked up on is that their name is otherwise known as the model number for a tape echo and delay recorder. So whom ever they are they probably work or play in the music industry. People often miss the real detail of people who want to leave a post. So quick to judge, but it wasn't a backhanded compliment at all. It was just an enthusiastic comment. The compliment was telling the videographer they were fucking awesome, but that seemed to be lost on everyone.

Hello, all. I am the videographer for this video. I never ever anticipated 2million plus views and the spirited discussion it has generated. I go to lots of concerts and make lots of videos and have not had this happen before. I attribute it to Sia's popularity and the song's popularity. I just wanted to add a few things. First, Sara is an amazing live performer and she sang this song in the middle of a set of about 18 songs. All just as good. Second, I recorded and included her chatting because she is very funny and I think her fans enjoy hearing her in between songs chat. Sorry for those who don't like that part. Third, Sara always includes covers in her shows and they are generally very different from the original, always her own take on them. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is one I recommend. Never cared about the song before i heard her version. Sorry, Elton fans. Fourth, in live shows, she "covers" her own songs in different ways from the studio version, Come Round Soon comes to mind. Last, I am glad a lot of you have enjoyed this performance and video and for those who did not, it just shows we don't all like the same things. Again, I continue to be amazed at the interest this has generated. Good for Sara, and SIa, too. :)

8throwcenter You got all these views because this video (and another one from Sara's Chicago concert) was linked to on a couple of well-read music blogs and then spread via social media--because of just how amazing Sara's singing is. Everyone and their brother have tried to cover Chandelier and most have fallen flat, except for Sara. And while this song is indeed popular I think Sara's got just as much name recognition--if not more--in the US as Sia.

I love Sia and Sara. The song chandelier lyrically we all know the darkness it speaks of...dark emotions and times, similar to Sia's "Breathe Me" and "I'm in Here" but vocally it's an exercise of power and control. Sia goes from belting does a key change into very high soft notes. Sara follows the roadmap but puts her vocal style to it. Sia has a raw sadness...one full of anger, desperation and hurt. Sara sings with a melancholy, beautiful sadness. Both renditions are powerful and beautifully done.

ahub87 Spot on! My brother and I was talking how differently both artists have interpreted this song. Sia makes you feel an intense pain, a pain that numbs you, a pain that is caused by the people around you. Her interpretation gives a message that no matter how inflicting the pain becomes, just continue to do the things that make you alive. Sara's interpretation gives an entirely different story with the same degree of powerful emotions. It has a feeling of being isolated, as you have best put, a beautiful melancholy. This is where you will see how singers transcends a performance and become a real artist. They don't just make sure that you will hear a different sound, but they will bring you to their counterpart world to tell another story.

Seriously, you haven't heard of her? Do "Love Song" or "Brave" ring any bells? She's actually more known for her songwriting and musicianship than her voice I suppose, but only because she doesn't go out of her way to show off her singing chops, like some vocalists do. But she was a judge on the acappella show The Sing Off for good reason, as she's a former acappella champ herself. Also, she's been nominated for several Grammys, including Album of the Year for her most recent record The Blessed Unrest.

I saw Sara sing this live in San Diego and I was BLOWN AWAY! Sara has this way of creeping up on you. At first you think, "Oh, this is good." And then towards the middle you have to slap yourself out of the trance she's just put you in. This and "Come Round Soon" were my favorite performances of her Little Black Dress tour. I can't get over how raw and hauntingly beautiful she is when it's just her and some strings.

Sia singing this live is amazing - raw, raw, gut wrenching emotion - as you'd expect from the person who wrote the song. But this is equally amazing, just in a different way, and by far the best cover of Chandelier that I have ever heard. Not as raw, but regardless a fantastic combination of technically amazing voice with, brilliant interpretation/emotion that is totally true to the words/intent of the original. Thank you, Sara.

+mysticsmb It seems to be a lot harder to do it raw, from a vocal perspective. Totally agree...I'm a singer, and it's kinda sad to realize how we all have internalized this idea of "high notes = good singer" and/or "singing super fast scales = good singer"...that's what the industry has told us and we've taken it as something real. That's technique (whether it's self taught or studied), and yeah, it's nice when you can control your voice at that level, but in my opinion it's overrated 'cause a wide vocal range is not always related to a good interpretation, passion nor a real connection with who you are and what you want to communicate to the audience...sometimes it looks like it's just the need of some singers of being praised by everyone (not talking about Sia...I don't even know her). So I think this perception of "ooohhh she lowered the key, she's worse than Sia" is quite limited. The technique should be put in service of the interpretation, not viceversa.

Really Gutsy!! I just realized that she took it down a key, but hey sustaining high F# is ridiculous. Only slightly less crazy is sustaining high E. High C# and above appears to be a challenge for this Indie vocalist (Alto). Sia doesn't blend at all which makes her F# insane. She strained too, but made it beautiful at the same time. I don't think Sara succeeded, as this song takes her two full notes out of her range. However she is incredibly courageous ... hit and sustained that high E ... Her rendition of the chorus withstanding, the verse was incredible. This is one talented vocalist. ~ Robert from Dallas
@mysticsmb
@mysticsmb 10 жыл бұрын
Robert Gold Sia only sings an F# in the studio version. When she's done it live (like on Howard Stern) she takes it down as well. On a challenging song like this you cannot compare studio and live--it's apples and oranges. And I don't see how Sara didn't succeed? She's pushing her range but not straining it, unlike Sia who cracks all over the place (which I like, btw). Sara's been singing this every night on tour for a month--if she was truly straining she'd have damaged her voice, and she's too smart to risk that.
@RobertGold
@RobertGold 10 жыл бұрын
What I said wasn't a dis, on the contrary ... I have Sara's music and listen to her often. This is completely out of the box for her. Straining appears to be a word that doesn't describe tone for you, pick a term that works for you :) Sia sings F# live in what I have viewed. We have obviously listened to different performances. In the studio version you can't hear her strain, live I could, but she contained it and it had a rather interesting sound, actually beautifully raw. Sara has a nice texture vocally, whereas Sia, Adele and Ellie Goulding as a few examples while in pitch have some vocal flaws that actually makes their voices beautifully unique. Each artist has gifts. There are very few Helene Fischer, Beyoncé and Mariah Carey's in the world. High F# sustained in a full voice is as rare as F6# sustained with a head voice. Indie vocalists are mostly altos or sing within E3 - C5 range effectively. Sara taking on C5# - E5 without blending is gutsy and not really effective. Where she blended she was effective in producing a healthy tone. I have heard Sia sing this song when she blended her head voice, likely times when she just didn't feel strong possibly in the later choruses, I don't know. This song is an incredible masterpiece as the range is only one hurdle, few artists even attempt to sustain C5 and shift to the third octave in the same breathe. A thirteen year old, Jasmine Thompson is one of the few who can pull this off masterfully at around 1:25 and 3:05. Thanks for your response mystic ... There is simply nothing to defend. I wasn't being critical, or that certainly wasn't my intention. Sara doesn't need defending, she is great!
@mysticsmb
@mysticsmb 10 жыл бұрын
Robert Gold This is not out of the box for Sara, at least not for her covers. It builds on what she did with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. And I just have no idea what you mean by 'effective.' Her tone is completely intact as she hits those notes--and they're precisely what people are responding to so effusively. The only verifiable live performance by Sia is from Howard Stern. She used playback completely for the Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers shows. As far as Ellen's show, most people think she used playback for the chorus and I have to agree. I'd previously listened to Jasmine--nice tone in the lower register/verses but weak head voice for the chorus that is a) technically much easier than what both Sara and Sia are doing and b) doesn't get at the desperation in the lyrics.
@RobertGold
@RobertGold 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I am going to stop here. As I illustrated three artists who F5# is in their zone. I think you are reading a critical view in what I wrote no matter what I might write to clarify what I am expressing.
@HannahRash

Robert Gold I just want to comment - not to argue - just to voice my opinion. Sara is purposely trying to differentiate between her chest voice and her head voice. I do see what you're saying about her straining, but if you weren't watching the video, you wouldn't be able to hear the strain. It's a matter of perception. Sara is one of the best vocalists on the scene - "indie" (as you say, although she is not) or otherwise. She has a jazz background, which you can clearly hear in some of the notes she picks out from the chord structure, which also doubles back to the clear differences between chest voice and head voice. I love Sia's voice, but she is screaming the high notes. Her voice cracks multiple times in the studio version as well as any live version - also a signature of hers. Sara, on the other hand, is not pitchy, nor she is not straining her voice to the point where it hurts her like I'm guessing Sia does. So in terms of "succeeding"... Sara B. clearly hit this out of the park. And she always does.

There's not many covers that I like but I'll admit she does an amazing job of making it her own.

Listening to Sara cover this amazing song makes one realize how fabulous Sia's voice really is. Sara does a decent job, but in contrast Sia brings out tremendous emotion that makes you want to listen again and again.

Stu Magnuson I love Sia's original, but I gotta say, this is the one that I play over and over--the sheer beauty of Sara's voice is addictive!

Completely agree. Sara's voice is pretty, but that's just it, it's just pretty. Sia has the power and the passion. But good job to Sara nonetheless.

I love the original as well but if you listen to asia live you can see that she clearly uses A LOT of auto tune
