Seth MacFarlane (actor/comedian) got really lucky cuz he was supposed to be on flight 11 (the first plane to hit the WTC). Here’s a few quotes of his: “I was booked on the first flight that hit the tower and I was drinking the night before, overslept a little bit in conjunction with the fact that my travel agent screwed up the itinerary by about 15 minutes, so I arrived 10 minutes late to get on the plane.” “I got to the counter. And I said, yes, I’m booked on Flight 11. And the woman behind the counter said, you know, you’re too late. They just closed the gate. And I said, all right. Well, you know, I’ll take the 11 o clock. Went into the lounge, fell asleep, woke up about 45 minutes later to a commotion, and the first plane had hit. And sat there and watched the second plane hit. And they announced what flight it was. And I turned to the guy next to me and said, ‘my God, that was the flight I was supposed to be on. I was late. I missed it.'” Mark Wahlberg also got lucky cuz he canceled his ticket at the last minute. David Angell (co-creator of Cheers, Wings & Frasier) wasn’t so lucky though. He & his wife were both sadly on Flight 11. May they & all the other victims R.I.P.

@@Kam_Havinn Radar was invented in the 1930's, and by 2001 was extremely sophisticated. It does not matter that those planes were hijacked, they were visible on radar going off course for a long time. Those planes were left untouched because the plan was always to have them crash into the towers.
@carhles4924
@carhles4924 4 жыл бұрын
Praetorian Dorn This was an unprecedented event. No one had ever seen such wide scale terrorism ever. When Flight 11 was hijacked, they couldn’t get hold of the cockpit. They didn’t know anything until Atta spoke to them minutes later. They deduced that it might’ve been a hijacking. Then the numerous phone calls made it clear that it was a hijacking. By the time the North Tower was hit, 175 was being hijacked. NORAD wasn’t notified about 175 until moments before it hit the South Tower. They knew it was terrorism at this point. 77 turned its transponder off, and we’re not even sure to this day what the flight path was. They didn’t know where 77 was until it neared DC airspace, which at that point it was too late. NORAD wasn’t notified of 93 until several minutes after it crashed near Shanksville. In hindsight, yes they should’ve been shot down. But nobody knew what was going on until it was too late.

Well, there is no ''you'' in flight control, more like ''they'', and a lot of them. Flight control staff are skilled men in navigation. They know how to direct flights, and there are a dozen of them working in one average sized airport. Pilots themselves need over 1500 hours of training, flying a plane, before they could actually fly one that is filled with passengers. There's at least 3 pilots in an average commercial plane. A captain, a first officer(co-pilot), and second, a relief pilot. All 4 have training in flying a plane and navigation. Hell, there's even navigators on board to do their job.

Way late, I know, but some anon soul to Ben shortly after the grounding order: Who gave you the authority to do that? Then later some other soul to Ben: What took you so long? Work for the govt myself, though nothing close to his job, but that is it, Can I/Should I and then the, what took you so long. Can I? Sometimes you have to, even though you technically cannot. Should I? Contra to what many have related re first strike, their initial thought, no accident, since that part of the landscape is a no-go area for most aircraft and so unless one posits an Egypt Air thing aka a pilot bent on suicide, well, even then not an accident, so unless you think the same thing aka a pilot bent on suicide, perhaps a grounding. Given the millions, etc., at stake, the timing of the, Should I, was entirely reasonable, as the timeline makes plain. Nothing else happened? Adm Nimitz to the Pacific fleet after some were caught in a typhoon: The time for taking all measures for a ship's safety is while still able to do so. Nothing is more dangerous than for a seaman to be grudging in taking precautions lest they turn out to have been unnecessary. Safety at sea for a thousand years has depended on exactly the opposite philosophy. Ben, you did well.

It's strange to know that my father was in one of those little yellow dots that day. He was on a business trip to North Carolina and landed at Fort Worth absolutely _clueless_ about the attacks. All the flights were put on hold or canceled, and then he went to the airline counter to ask the reason for it. A lady who worked there told him that both WTC main towers were hit, and he thought she was joking. He was extremely cynical to her, saying “will Bush pay my bills then?”, to which she replied: “sir, you better see what's happening there”, while pointing out to the TV inside a restaurant. That’s when he first saw the horrible scene of both towers in flames. He then got stuck in the US, bought a PS2 to play at the hotel during his stay, and only managed to go back to South America via Chile after three days; finally arriving home on September 15th. RIP all 9/11 victims. Greetings from Brazil.

I had a golden moment in my life where I was providing security for NAVCANA Enroute air traffic control security. I asked the main controller what the airspace above the US was like and he explained most air-traffic made it to the ground except one aircraft. He over heard communications from US ATC and a f15 that one aircraft had not landed. He said he heard this pining sound from the F15 broadcast. He said that was a air to air missile that was ready to be used to take down the airliner.

I still cannot imagine experiencing 9/11 as an adult (born in 94). I just have no idea how I would react honestly… it’s really an incomparable event. Would feel like the end of the world after hearing the pentagon was hit I assume. I remember coming home from third grade class that day. My dad was watching the news and told me a plane hit a building, and I imagined something like a Cessna accidentally colliding with a skyscraper. A few days later I think our elementary school held an assembly where they did their best to explain what happened. I may be misremembering. God bless all who died that day

My father was on a business trip to Sudan (Africa) that day. When they got off their plane the Sudanese were celebrating, there were children and adults running through the capital's streets joyfully. The business meeting was of course cancelled but there was no way to get out of Sudan because all flights had been cancelled. My father and his fellow business partners being white wanted to get the hell out of Sudan. After many days of fear my father got a call that an Egypt Air plane (i believe) was to depart from the airport. People were literally fighting for plane tickets at the airport and in the end egypt air had put in that many seats that there was not more than a shoe lenght of leg room and some people had no seat at all. They flew to namibia (i believe) and from there they had struggles finding pyet another plane back to europe. In the end they flew to Amsterdam, and then back home.

One of the weird things you never think about is, when they build airports, do they build the runways to accommodate that many planes during a national emergency?
@sagbon98
@sagbon98 Жыл бұрын
They take into account contingencies and extra room for extra planes, but not hundreds of extra planes, especially not at tiny airports like Gander. Sometimes, big, abandoned airports are perfect for this scenario because they are empty and have capacity for many planes and passengers. Just look at Ciudad Real, Spain, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The case of 9/11 of course is abnormal.

Most of these flights were of those sardine cans that do just short local flights between close states. That's why the map clears so fast, since they can land in any regional airport. You can see that only the truly large planes stay at the end because they need to land only in large international airports. The Denver one is a nice example, you can see all planes coming back to it.
