9/11: Incredible On-Air Phone Call Between Newsreader and Husband Captures Collapse of Second Tower

On 11 September 2001, an incredible on-air phone call between ITN's Kirsty Young and her husband Nick Jones captured the terrifying moment the second tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. Young was presenting ITV's live news coverage as events unfolded in New York and Washington DC when she spoke, live on-air, to her husband who was in New York on a business trip. Jones was recounting his morning and describing his view from the 12th floor of a building in Lower Manhattan when the second tower fell. Maintaining an astonishing level of professional focus, Kirsty Young listened to her husband's voice while looking at live pictures of the devastation being wrought on New York. Reflecting the uncertainty, fear, and chaos unleashed by that morning's terror attacks, Jones told Young "I don't know when I'll be coming home." In a tone as restrained as it was reassuring, Young told him to "take very good care of yourself," adding "I'll speak to you later - off-air."

It'll probably be because it's not ITN's footage so aren't allowed to use it here. For matters of taste and sensitivity the actual footage of the crashes and explosions etc is only reshown by British TV channels when absolutely necessary

​@StuartClary May also be as ITN don't have the footage, perhaps the audio as evidenced here, but not a copy of the live coverage (the only other copy therefore being a low rate VHS uploaded on to KZbin). Possible even in 2001 that ITN were not recording newsflashes etc, though I suspect all scheduled bulletins by this point would have been recorded. See also the live footage of the 'moment' they announced Diana, Princess of Wales had died that they put up only a few years ago, when the actual announcement was minutes earlier and uploaded many years ago on another very poor quality KZbin clip from its early days.

The fires were fed by aviation fuel from the planes that were crashed into the towers and thus melted the steel that held the structure together. The 'explosions' were caused by the expulsion of air from floors below the impact zones as the upper floors gave way.

Sound reason isn't going to work on someone who already determined it suitable to just up and anoint himself an expert in the area of aviation/skyscraper disasters with zero background. I think the towers collapsed because planes hit them, and the ensuing fires caused catastrophic structural failures due to the construction methods.

The guy said it all "it was too high up for it to cause the collapse" and I think most of us agree it literally collapsed into itself as if several explosions (which he mentions) had happened at the bottom of the towers....

You seem to forget there are videos of the event and we don't need to rely on your faulty memory. We can see the top start to fall and turn until the floors below can't hold it and then smoosh down through the lower floors scattering debris across a city block. We can see the debris mushroom out and outpace the collapse of the tower. Why would you even lie about something like this?

Its heartbreaking to see how far America has fallen since 9/11. It was such a unified country then & everyone was so patriotic. The motto was We will remember, we will never forget, yet with the division we see it's obvious people have pushed this out of mind. I will never forget the photos of patriotism like the firefighters hanging the USA flag from the wreckage & pushing up the flagpole in the rubble together & hanging flags on the pentagon. When Lee Greenwood sand "I'm proud to be an American" ev1 cried & sang along waving flags. Now old glory is burned in the streets, stomped on, replaced with pride flags & talked about in the most disturbing ways. Police & firemen were mourned & praised & respected in the highest regards, made monuments of & now hated & defunded, run out of communities. People reached out to help 1 another opened their homes & hearts. Now they are senselessly fighting robbing killing each other, calling for separation of people by color in schools etc. Perhaps 22 years later it's time to stop, & really remember & appreciate how fortunate we are to live free & start with looking in the mirror for fault & loving our neighbors again. GOD BLESS AMERICA
