I want to alert people to a major killer after flooding, high winds, hurricanes, tornadoes, and vehicle wrecks where there are downed power lines. It’s called “Step Potential” when a high voltage power line is on the ground, the ground becomes energized up to 40 feet away, when you walk, or stand on this electrified ground, you are instantly electrocuted. One of the major dangers after the hurricane has passed, is Step Potential during the aftermath, and cleanup process when there is downed power lines. A downed power line carries 7,300 Volts or more with millions of Amps, and sends electricity thru the ground. Even a crane, or industrial equipment touching a overhead power line can pass electricity thru the ground thru the stabilizing jacks on the ground, metal to earth grounding.. Search Step Potential, and watch the videos on KZbin.
@featheramericangoodeagle4 жыл бұрын
The first thing people think about who are familiar with electrical energy, is electrocution due to what you have stated. it was the first thing I thought of. Thank you for your informative comment, a rare thing these days...

Some of the older buildings stand up better than the newer ones. They have denser hardwood framing, which came from old growth forest, (much better than what comes from lumber yards today). They were hammered together with longer nails, and don't have vinyl windows that pop out.

I'm surprised to see some kind of construction going on that close to the water's edge. I was a water boundary surveyor and it takes a lot to get a permit for doing so. Hmm. It's the DNR line which has boundary posts. Most of those structures that close to the water cannot get insurance within the USA and have to go to Lloyd's of London or the like to get insurance. It's so sad the see the damage done to the little town and I feel so badly for all who have been so affected. My prayers are with them all. Thank you for posting!

Gulf Shores before the storm was a very pretty tourist destination. I have family who lives in or near this coastal, and visited there before it became so built up. Used to have 20 ft. sand dunes, (with sea grass), and quaint beach bars that were built out over the ocean waves with a deck around it. Locals used to run their dune buggies and old jeeps over the sand dunes at night by moonlight, (as least a few people I knew did). Ah yes, white sand memories.

The locals have a huge job ahead of them to remove the damage/junk and then to rebuild. I hope the state and federal government offer them help and money.
