I was watching another video that showed a lot of destruction. I commented that many of those structures were not built to withstand a CAT 3. In most place around the Gulf, most structures are supposed to be able to withstand a CAT 3. In this video you can see which ones were built to withstand a CAT 3 and which ones weren't.

We sat on the beach and watched boats towed out and boat traffic in the water driven towards Destin once it was determined the Mississippi coast was in the path. A good day before we had to leave. I was shocked at all the boats in Sally that are sunk or washed up on the highway.

This video starts at Theo Barr’s bridge on the ICW and heads west for about a mile, and stops just about even with the Sunset Grill on the opposite bank. It’s then jumps to the Oyster Bar Marina & Resturant. Barr’s bridge is in background. Lots of damage to marina & resturant. Not sure of boat launch. It might be the new one in the Big Lagoon State Park. It’s almost directly across from the Marina & restaurant

Notice some houses are devestated and others untouched. The ones untouched were built to the building codes or beyond. Building when you or your contractor doesn't know what they are doing, or cheating the codes only hurts yourself and costs you time/money/heartbreak in the end. Do it right, do it once.

Your a idiot .u have 0 clue about hurricanes. Yes ppl do cheat, but in Orange beach gulf shores area it's almost impossible to cheat the code as u say . Simply for this reason. Every house by me got destroyed except mine. And funny thing , they were up to code. Things happen during a hurricane and it comes down to luck of the draw, or mother nature winning . All it takes is your house to be 6" lower or simply just the unlucky one and your house can be gone . Not to mention some houses r older then others and not everyone can afford to just build a brand new house when they have a house already .

I'm guessing that the boats that are swamped will probably structurally sound enough once refloated. However, I would expect any electrical or mechanical would need a complete overhaul and/or replacement. I should never have to worry about any of that with a 12' jonboat and a trolling motor :)

Ono Island is one of the richest residential areas in that part of Florida/Alabama. It's entrance is guarded and you have to cross over their bridge to enter.

Really sad and no disrespect but you can see what happens to old stuff (piers, moorings, decks) when a storm rolls through. You can see the storm surge did not go up that far and a solid pier should not be ripped up even in a Cat 3. Now when you have older stuff and maybe a deck was built on where it shouldn't have been. An awning here an over sized boat for the pier there, boats docked stern out... you have a mess...

Solid concrete pour houses were being built the last 20 years. Before that the popular construction was drivit false stucco over wood frame. Often not strong enough even with hurricane framing. Builders learn lessons over time.
