The first modern electrical air conditioning unit was not invented until 1902. Have you ever wondered how ancient people survived summer heat with no refrigerators, no electric fans, and no air conditioners?
Here are 9 brilliant summer hacks Chinese people used in ancient time. Many of them are so effective that people still use them today!
These Chinese summer hacks will not only help you cool down naturally in summer, they will also come in handy during a power outage ;)

I always wondered how they slept on those high rectangle pillows in period dramas. And now I find there's a porcelain version in that shape? Woah..

bamboo bed sheets are really commo in South Asia too As a Bengali from a Tropical country, hot summer is normal. So my maternal grandma used to send us her homemade Bamboo bedsheets cuz those aren't that easy to find in the city

Ally Wang, thanks for the information. Something you haven't quite mentioned - food as medicine, not for getting cool, but for accepting the heat and feeling comfortable with it. Some years ago, my house-host's Chinese Indonesian father was visiting. It was a quite hot and humid Brisbane day and I was sure feeling that! After asking me if I like fish, and seaweed (yes to both), he gave me a small bowl of soup - hot (chili) enough to make me sweat but not enough to burn, and sour enough that I could definitely taste that, but not enough to purse my mouth. It had small-ish pieces of white fish flesh, and some pieces of seaweed (wakame? don't think it was kelp), (and maybe some tofu??? don't remember) but was otherwise a reddish? clear soup. After drinking that small bowl, suddenly I felt completely comfortable with the heat and humidity, // completely comfortable ! // for some hours afterward. It was amazing. I actually haven't managed to replicate the effects myself though :( - thinking maybe Thai Tom Yum was the basis? or Chinese Hot And Sour Soup is a standard Chinese recipe? I have since read, there is a TCM school of thought, that says bringing the temperature of your outer body to match the environment is the way to go (rather than the Western way of trying to cool the core) - so that should equally apply to cold weather, damp weather (ricepaddy workers!), etc, with the right recipes. Anyway, if you, or anyone, can make such a soup with that effect, please share recipe and method !! Cheers !

Would you do a winter version of this? Kinda interested in how Chinese people survived winters in the past, especially the north.

I’m interested in the emotion chart you showed. Would you mind sharing? I also found the ice fascinating! Most of the shows I watch all mention not drinking cold drinks! Thank you this was so interesting!

I visted Fort Knox in Main and the way they built that place there was no need for AC. It was a hot, humid day outside but when exploring inside the walls and under the fort it got cold! The way the fort was built allowed the fort to maintain its internal temperature. Even though the windows did not have any panes I could not feel any heat coming through (the "windows" were actually gunman and cannon holes-- very small slits in the wall).

So when you're depress, your body temp is cool down? That kind of explain why in that one summer, when i experienced a depressive episode that lasted for days, i didn't feel hot or bother by the heat at all, eventhough my family had tried to get me out of my attic room because it was too hot and they were worried.

@@angelabby2379 Hanfu is traditional clothing not costume, those from films are not accurate representations and definitely not practical.

@@aidijin6647 yeah i mean it's unpractical since the empress or nobility didn't work or anything, ( there are saying that the more layer u have, the richer you are)

No matter how cool this traditions are, technology is still the best of the best way to combat nature. Feel hot ? use AC, Feel cold ? use heater or fireplace. Want cold/hot drink ? use dispenser. 😀
