FAR NORTH SOLO 9-Day Wild Fishing Canoe Trip (FULL + Q&A)
A magical 9-day/144km trip to Ontario's far north on the Marshall Lake loop. Massive lakes and wetlands full of vegetation, fish, and wildlife. Special trip.
As usual with full version reposts, I tried to polish it a bit more, there's some footage I included the first time got cut, some that I cut before is now in, and a Q&A based on questions from the original multi-part series is at the end. The Q&A is the last 15 mins of the video.
Note on the PFD - I still had my old life jacket on this trip and it was very uncomfortable for paddling. This used to result in not wanting to wear it, except in rapids when I felt it was critical. I now have a paddling PFD and I wear it all the time. For Erin's sake more than anything, because it would not be fair to her to die that way. I'm not PFD police but I will just say that a comfortable life jacket that's designed for paddling will make all the difference. If you hate wearing a PFD on canoe trips, you might just need a different one.

I just wanted to say a sincere thank you, Jon, for taking us along on these awesome backcountry trips. It's been a long time since I was able to get out. Needless to say that life is just like those rivers we run. You can never step into the same river twice. Always changing, ever new. Sometimes challenging, sometimes a bit scary. But all, in all, an epic and enjoyable adventure. I sure do appreciate tagging along, though. Thanks again brother 👍.

My husband and I discovered your channel about 3 weeks ago. We LOVE watching them and prefer your videos over regular TV programming. We’re into nature and having lived and camped and fished in Northern Ontario, (Chapleau, The Sault, Temiskaming, North Bay), it’s like coming home. Oh how miss the loons! We love checking out everything. Love your appreciation and care for nature, love listening to your thought processes on life, love the occasional misjudgements and ‘whoops’ too 😆. You’ve got a winner. By the way, you should create a cookbook of all your delicious looking camping meals $$. Makes me want to run into the kitchen and try them out! Now I’m going to play Mama here, because, we’ll b/c I’m old enough and been there done that 😉. It’s been concerning me that you and your lovely Erin, though eating mainly healthy meals, eat enough sodium based and sugar laden foods, to really make an impact on your health. 4G of sugar = 1 tsp of sugar - Yikes, and daily sodium sh/b no higher than 1500mg. Heavy sodium and sugar consumption leads to complications in later life. I remember being your age and I wish someone would have told me. You love what you do and you want to continue that well into your 50’s, 60’s and even 70’s. It’s all about maintenance now, better life later. End of sermon 😔. Take care and keep on, keeping on!

Love your videos Jon... They warm the spirit on a cold winter's night out here in B.C. and bring back memories of growing up in northern Ontario and canoeing with my dad. For mosquitoes we use a mix of natural essential oils like catnip, lavender, eucalyptus, etc. mix and match to your scent preference but include catnip if you can find it... For ghiardia and other waterborne parasites we use Oregon grape rootbark tea which contains berberine when we are out in the wild as it grows almost everywhere on the coast... Must be something your native elders use back there... A nod to the natural from us geriatric gypsy canoeists...

Thanks a lot Brian! Erin's mom has since got me some natural repellants (similar to the ones you mentioned) which I'll have to try this summer. Would love to know a natural water treatment method with local plants...I'll have to look into that :)

Excellent. Thank you Jon. We either learn by making the mistakes ourselves - or seeing others make them. Thanks for 'taking one for the team' with that questionable 'run'. I've done a lot of things, that i look back on, and wonder how I am still alive. Canoeing in croc country - around islands with crocs much larger than my canoe .. stupid and lucky. And lots of other, equally stupid stuff ... if others can benefit from our mistakes, it almost makes them worthwhile. Thanks for filming yours. Love your work. John

Love the videos dude. Definitely making a winter lockdown in Ireland alot easier for me. Wondering if you ever tried fly fishing on any of your adventures, looks like it would be alot of fun on some of those lakes. Keep the mini movies coming. Tight lines 💪🎣

Even if I never get out to explore all the beautiful places you’ve been, thanks to your effort in filming, I can revisit these places again and again, as if I have been. I always find myself tracking your journey on various maps....thinking maybe....someday. Jonathan...It feels as though you’ve already travelled and explored more than most...and yet we all know the best is yet to come. Thoroughly enjoyed this latest edition. Now whenever I see that beat up old aluminum cook pot I find myself thinking....that’s going to be on display someday in a museum somewhere....commemorating the life of an amazing adventurer and conservationist. It has been such a pleasure thus far Jon. Thankyou.
