My Self Reliance

My Self Reliance

2 жыл бұрын

From raw forested wilderness, I clear the land and build an off grid wilderness homestead with a greenhouse, forest garden, outhouse, root cellar and log cabin.
The journey to my self reliance is just beginning - please keep watching to see how I continue to transform this forest into an oasis for nature and man, living harmoniously away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

It's a form of obsession. This man has an obsession with being self reliant and on his own. I am sure he also gets the highest form of satisfaction and happiness doing this type of work everyday. It's his "thing" just like a master crafter who is obsessed with his craft or a top level athlete who is obsessed with the sport of his choice.

Your wilderness off-grid homestead is coming together to the joy of so many of us who watch you ..... the workshop with sleeping/heating/cooking accommodations; the charming outhouse; the dome & outdoor food gardens; the cooking & food prep buildings; and now, the piece de resistance, the grand off grid cabin .... and not unappreciated & loudly lauded, your creative pulleys & many ways for making it all happen with total disregard for the obstacles. Not surprising that hundreds of thousands support & cheer you on & find great spirit & inspiration from your channels & your life. One thing left I wish for you, to find joy, see the beauty & experience the serenity of winter’s magical white wilderness. Be Well & Stay Safe Shawn,

Seeing you mill the lumber brings back memories. My Grandpa in Virginia (Shenandoa Valley, on the Opequon Creek) had a sawmill. The creek was dammed; a mill-race is what powered the mill. People in the valley depended on him. As a kid, I was fascinated by the Farm. Of course, the mill is long since gone. Crumbled to ruin. But I'll never forget the history; the area was the scene of a civil war battle, on record. Shot holes in the window frames. The farmhouse was built in 1800; the barn was built of bricks made from clay dug from the creek. The B&O railroad ran through the property. You could set your watch by the train as it came by.

Not what we as a majority are doing now we have to go back to these Roots farming building and most of all respecting caring and loving each other not stabbing each other in the back and being unable to fend for ourselves without assistance!

The meditation of these videos is brilliant. I often have trouble sleeping, always did. These videos settle the hamster in the squeaky wheel in my head. Not to mention the things I've learned. Built a 22x10 shed with bits I've learned here. Most notably, how to lift big shit on your own & how to square stuff to within less than ¹/16" error. The windows and doors are horrible, but it's a shed, not a house.

It makes me sad to know that 250 years ago we all would have lived like this, simple, hard work for your own reward, but now we work our butts off for someone else, go home to a house we don’t own or are in major debt over and only very few people have these amazing, self reliant skills that all would’ve required to live! Thank you my friend for keeping these skills alive, and good luck for the future!

Shawn, I really enjoyed watching this video with my 2 children on our big t.v. We don't have typical cable where you turn on and flip through junk but are selective of what we watch. I believe this can teach them the bounty or fruits of hard work, self study, commitment and just trusting in yourself along with seeing the beauty of nature. My 6 yr old daughter kept saying and he's doing this all by himself:) That said, this video for whatever reason struck me as something really beautifully laid out with how you started with you building that little bridge over the creek nearly 2 years ago, going to present day, then reminding us of that beginning at the creek once more laying the timbers. I think if you played Ashokan Farewell I would have shed a salty tear at that moment:) I'm a person of faith, so I wonder if you feel that invisible guiding hand at times while you work- that sense of peace ( which I would say feels like a smile upon you from above as you too create) and never feel truly alone. I wish you all the best! Thanks once more for sharing what you do. It's inspiring.

I love the specialized tools… I have seen the portable saw mills before but who knew they made these other cool things? I can appreciate the need to give a sense of completing the construction in an “off grid “ formation but obviously there is a certain amount of reliance on the availability of modern materials and equipment. This is nothing to be taken as a dig, I have been a builder my whole life. I have always been a self reliant person. It’s ok to “rely” on modern tech. In fact it’s “smart” to do so. His work, his effort, his enterprise is “authentic” in every sense of the word. Shaun is a very talented guy. Industrious, patient, forgiving and insightful. Exemplary and inspirational.

I tend to think everything happens for a reason, and I can see how this time around your planning and attention to things is different than when you built your first cabin. Cabin.2.0 the improved homestead. Beautiful work and design of everything, you are an inspiration to me and SO many others.

Shawn is the hardest working millionaire on KZbin...he deserves his new homestead, and it will be built well and very solid. Those nails in the basement...40 or 60 penny? Huge nails and lots of heavy lifting and digging...great work out for Shawn!

What a pleasure watching you work, Shawn!! How does all this charm, all this knowledge, all this genius be in just one man? We are all amazed! Thank you for allowing us, your public, to watch you work, step by step! Will we be privileged to watch you with your family on this Christmas holiday? That would be so nice for some of us who have no plans of our own this Christmas!

I'm ever so grateful for you and that you make these videos. I've been getting bit stressed with all that's happening in our world and this is a great way for me to relax and clear my head, heart and spirit. I'll keep following along. Thanks for the journey! ❤️

Honestly the fact that you’re doing this all by hand makes it all the mor impressive because you are working harder than the people who used to build cabins in this way as you are doing all the manual labor by yourself very impressive and a beautiful build and video 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Beautifully illustrated. The feelings this evokes for me is a sense of security and comfort. Your steady, persistent pursuit of a new family dwelling makes all the effort a true act of love. Love the guitar accompaniment in the end....perfect.💗

That opening shot of your old place was quite nostalgic. That said, I love what you've been doing (and where you're going) with the new place. And, just generally, that you keep on going with it all. You're an inspiring dude.

This recap is a great idea Shawn. I've watched every minute of every video and appreciate the time you take to show your process in detail. Showing it like this, at a faster pace, seems to bring the steps together in a more cohesive way. I found myself thinking back to the more detailed footage of each step and now, it all kinda drops into place. Of course, it also gives you the chance to showcase more of the backdrop and it's residents. I find that I get time to think, when watching these. With no commentary, it's easier to concentrate on what we're seeing. I found myself thinking today about the tools you uae the most. Saw; hammer; brace+bit are all in there, along with shovels but my money would be on your wood-gripping/turning/carrying gadgets and, right at the top of the list - the simple tape measure. Maybe 𝒏𝒐𝒕 what people would guess?

I stumbled on your video’s and am fascinated by your ingenuity and fortitude. I dream of the life style you’ve chosen . Like you I like privacy. It’s a shame that those old neighbors couldn’t be respectful of your’s. The purpose of being off grid is to get away from rift raft and enjoy open space, nature’s beauty and live by the land and all it’s God given resources available to you. I will continue watching your videos to see the new homestead and where life takes you and family. Till than enjoy the peace and solitude you all deserve. God speed.

Firstly Shawn huge admiration for all your have done so far on this new property mostly on your own and going it with very little help from tools that aren't human powered. With the old properly and now the new you have some wonderful stories to tell and show the grand kids. I can't wait to see when you have finished your home and can focus on life each day and have time to enjoy all your hard work. BTW you know you really did a Sh*t house job on that Dunny of yours!😁 We in Australia have many names for ours Loo, dunny thunderbox, Sh*t house, toilet, bog, royal Thrown, capper, The Long Drop, I just use loo myself, or as a cat lover "Off to dig a hole" But seriously mate that is one very impressive long drop loo When I used to live on a mates farm we had something simular on skids We would use the tractor with a large auger on it, drill down about that xxx deep, drag the loo ontop We would keep a bucket of fire, Ash or sawdust near it to cover each addition, then when full dig another hole and move on AND we Would plant a fruit tree in the old hole. There a good system... UNTIL THE WATER Table catches you up 😂 Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺
