Here We Go! 1st Snow of the Season, Off-Grid Solar Electricity Installation, Hanging the Front Door

My Self Reliance

Жыл бұрын

Peak autumn color is quickly replaced by a blanket of snow as I continue preparing the cabin for winter. Outside, I install the last metal roof panel and a ridge cap on the breezeway, install an adjustable steel racking system for the solar panels beside the greenhouse and dig a trench for the cables to run back to the cabin. Inside, I finish assembling the door to the front porch and hang it on hinges, temporarily placing the wood insert that will be relief-carved over the winter. In the basement, I insulate the cellar walls and cover one wall in 1' pine boards to install the solar inverter, panel and batteries and I move the water storage tank into place. Before finishing the insulation on the main floor, I run the wiring for lights and switches and take stock of what hardware items I need to finish the electrical system for installation this week.

One thing I have to say, the snow covered scenery and the cabin between the trees, is like looking at a Christmas postcard. Is simply gorgeous. Sean, you are an inspiration to those who are thinking of living off grid. Step by step you have shown how much work is involved, not to give up, because at the end you will see the fruits of your labor. Thank you for your videos and may God continue blessing you and your family.

And I think of all the people he has motivated to be more than they were yesterday. I won't have a piece of land and a home I've built, but I will have my own dwelling and will be able to see what I've done to make it what I want. TY, Shawn and TY Mrs. Shawn!! You need to get out there and make it happen. Many people have cabins that are up for sale that has a little land around it. Buy one and do little projects to make it self-sustaining. Or, if you have a house now with a little land, maybe get solar panels, drill a well...do something. It doesn't have to be Shawn's project...it can be yours.

Then who would chop the wood, fetch water, clean off the snow, clean the outdoor biffy? There are not lots of hours when one lives off grid. It takes most of the daylight hours to just survive. And the evening is keeping fire going, and meal, clean up the hard way, and exhausted to bed. So, people can imagine it would be all cozy, but the work efforts are many, before the cozy time happens, and it is not for HOURS. I know, been there done that, not for years, but long enough to know how much labour intensive it is.
@CGH250

@@coolwater55 - there must be a work/life balance. If every moment of the day were spent doing everything you listed and there was no time for simply enjoying what you created, what’s the point??? Of course there’s work. There’s also relaxation. I come from a 300 year generational family of farmers who worked from dawn to dusk and every Saturday, they loaded long kitchen tables with food they had grown, invited cousins from nearby farms and had old fashion square dances by huge fireplaces - eating, dancing and enjoying life. They made or built everything they owned! They grew everything they ate. They were the pioneers of off grid living - there was no grid! They found time on Sundays for church and just enjoying their families. They found time to go visit each other. They knew how to work hard and how to play hard! So again - I would grab my favorite throw and curl up by the fire and enjoy that beautiful cabin for hours!

@@CGH250 There you go. I can only imagine, that would not be an often occurrence, knowing the dynamics of off grid living. Yes, families can gather and play, but most times it is the older ones who are doing the most work. I have been in large family for decades, part Italian on my husbands side. Many meals prepared for days, and setting up and dishes afterward and clean up of halls or homes. I finally just said I do not want to go anymore, it is too much work. It is not playing... for some even if others have a great time. If one is the youngest, it sometimes seems like they do more playing than working in big families. I know too from that experience being second oldest in a large family. By the time it got to the last few children, they were playing more and we older ones were were still doing. Enjoy the cozy fires.

So, you're pretty buttoned up for the winter then, eh? Surely is looking good. I saw water, power, the wood stove, loads of insulation, that amazing roof - and oh, the floor! Plus the 2nd panel on the front door made it perfect. You've done an amazing job for a guy almost entirely on his own - it's a knockout. That wonderful cover over the front porch is brilliant - lots of weather protection. Lots more I could gush on about but the real judge is your wife! Hopefully she'll appreciate all the amenities added in this cabin compared to the last one. Winter will be loads more comfy here for sure.

After all these years I never have grown tired of your videos. I truly appreciate all of the beautiful scenery you have recorded. I would love to be there myself except I absolutely can't take the cold. But I can enjoy the views in my Arizona home. Thanks again.

This weather makes a sad time of year. I can see it in Cali's face. Even chasing after her toy is not as much fun now as it was when she enjoyed the days of summer. So many of the shots of her show her resignation. It's that time of year again. She has seen it before. The other day you were both in the house and you were building a fire. She stood behind you and looked around the room. You could see it in her eyes. Ok, so we're back in the house again. It almost made me cry. For it reminded me of my youth. When I knew that it was time to move back into the apartment and leave the cottage behind. Even though I knew we would be back, there was a sadness. I hope that this winter will bring you new joys and success in the projects you have to do. We are all so happy and proud of what this year has brought you. You have achieved much this year. Please know that you are held in much high esteem by your subscribers.

Loved the new angles and views of the cabin and its setting. You chose well! Also appreciated the progress you're making in heat, power, etc. The snow has a kind of "end of chapter" feeling, but that's okay, because you have shelter, you have a family, and you know where you're going. God bless you and your family - and Cali, of course!

Aw, man ☺️ I've been helping my youngest Son clean up after Ian for three weeks. He lost everything but the structure of the house. Block cheered yesterday for the contractors that came to get all the branches out. Just finished getting all his furniture off the lawn and to the curb. Saw you walking up your stairs and I felt that,Tired. Then you turned around and threw it for Cali? Beautiful. Thanks for your inspiration ☺️

Gosh those solar towers looked heavy. Cali made me smile when she wouldn’t give up her throw toy and laid on the door when you were working. They certainly know what they want and have us humans in the palm of their paws. Good work and lovely footage of the swollen river. Take care, be safe. ❤ Dorset, UK

So systematic, right down to the first snowfall - I know this is Shawn’s third building project ( that I know of). But practice makes it easier: on the other hand, his body is older now too. I’m so happy for him & his wife: their empty nest home together. Looks like good years ahead with success of the channel- I’ve been a long time subscriber and although I have to turn down the hammer sounds, ive been impressed with his Focus throughout these videos, ! Bringing back what men strive for : freedom to mound outside influences and build confidence in themselves. The flowing, dancing waters were wonderful to stop and enjoy., as soon enough, they will be still and stiff .
