It only takes one look at Johannes Junius's letter to his daughter to see that not only women were called witches, but also men people were jealous of. Those times were really the worst for humanity, and it's really sad to know they still happen nowadays, only with different names and words...
@AdriansArtАй бұрын
You know, I hadn't made that connection, but you're right. Every time a woman gets much of anywhere, there's a huge chance people will blame her for sleeping around to get where she is. A deal with the devil is now a few deals with various men. A shockingly direct progression for something I hadn't noticed. Thanks for the line of thought.
@LizzieNyaАй бұрын
@@AdriansArt Same goes for men. @chattycatty3336Ай бұрын
its sad to think about how much further we could have been as a society if people of those times had just decided to ask each other their methods. Instead of becoming jealous and accusing them of witchcraft, they could have learned their recipes, processes, fishing techniques, etc., and flourished as a society. With that first one, people could read on a basic level, particularly for writing receipts and general notices in the town square. They maybe didn’t know how to spell things correctly (as most languages weren’t really standardized until after that era) but could do basic readings, particularly for daily religious prayer and general commerce. The “you know too much” as a woman is more of a sign of disrespect to the men in the village. No woman was supposed to know more than a man, as they were considered intellectually inferior to men at that time.

Bathing wasn't just a luxury. Many people thought of it as immoral and dangerous because you had to get naked and because people easily drowned due to heavy wet wool garments when bathing in a stream. They also thought bathing would make them sick, maybe because they would be chilled amd then have a fever? There are stories of pious men known as such because they never bathed and also didn't keep company with women. Vikings didn't follow these trends and were known to be barborous for bathing and being kempt and foreign and sometimes enticing to the opposite sex and of course also for the for the pillaging. So then all their traits were synonymously dangerous. It was an easy leap to make for any of their traits to be found logically dangerous.
