Just the video I need just when I need it. After taking 5 days to write 3 minutes of music for the Score Relief competition it's become clear that writing more efficiently is my biggest challenge to overcome right now. Thank you Anne!
@AnneKathrinDernComposer2 жыл бұрын
So glad to hear this is helpful! I will say that these competitions are not necessarily a good representation of writing speed for film scores since you're usually coming up with new material on the fly. On a film score, you'd spend a good 10 days or so working on themes and all the base material so when you score to picture, you're not actually coming up with too much new material anymore (which is kind of the time consuming part).
@rgallitan2 жыл бұрын
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer True, and of course most are putting extra effort into a competition to show their best work. But I was also kicking ideas around in my head for weeks before I finally sat down to write so I'm not sure how much that counts as an excuse haha. For me, part of it is skillset. Moving from one chord to the next is still too often a puzzle rather than just a decision. And I tend to spend too much time relistening/relitigating what I've already written instead of moving swiftly forward with a piece. But I realize now the main thing is just making consistent time to do some of this every day so I can get the practice that will solve those other issues. I will definitely be looking into those social media blockers. I may regret it like Young Frankenstein pounding on the door, but it'll be good for me. 😂

@@rgallitan No social media here. No FB, no Twitter, no anything else of that nature. Ever. That alone allows tremendous amount of extra time, that would have been wasted on the internet… Just like yourself, I like constantly listening to what I just wrote, making adjustments, additions, subtractions etc. I think this is one of the most important things in active film scoring (I do NOT write for films yet, just for big arena events, concerts). Let me know how you overcame this thing… just curious.

Excellent tips. I cannot stress getting enough sleep and drinking at least 3 liters of water a day. When I didn't get eight hours, I turned into an unfocused, useless human being right after lunch every day, and my anxiety levels spiked. Proper sleep fixed that. And with water, I was barely drinking any. Mostly coffee, but not much. Well, an attack of kidney stones put me in the hospital and besides the almost unbearable pain, I lost a week or more of productivity. Lack of water is one of the leading causes of kidney stones. I now make sure to stay fully hydrated. Everyone should.
@AnneKathrinDernComposer2 жыл бұрын
YES, I feel like this can't be stressed enough. Especially the anxiety bit - I had a whole phase where I was constantly anxious, nervous, in a mood... and it all stemmed from not getting enough sleep over a longer period of time, not drinking enough water, and not getting enough Vitamin D. It kind of creeps in and then it's so irritating because I didn't know where this was coming from. Thankfully, I haven't had to deal with kidney stones yet but I can imagine how disruptive that would be on so many levels.

This was clarifying for me somehow near the end it struck me that morale and inspiration were two different things, for me at least. That inspiration and reward are almost like the same thing but morale that's another thing entirely - something I'm going to mull over. It does wear down your morale to be always pulled away from your "thing" by dreary-seeming stuff. @@AnneKathrinDernComposer Golden advices ! As working professional musician in order to be productive and creative, one needs that balance in your life in general. Myself - born and raised in Poland, just like yourself locating here from Europe (Walt Disney World in Florida in my case) with all “Steps” that took it... Only you and I know what it means :-) ha, ha ! Perhaps that alone made you an organized and analytical person - the extreme challenge to even “make it here” ? Probably combination of all elements. Creativity is daily thing, so is rest, and after 20 plus years of professional career as a pianist/composer I learned everything you say here. I wish some things I discovered earlier, but sometimes it takes to to “self discover” about anything unhealthy and counterproductive. Just like you I noticed a thing about “American culture “ that you mention on your video, compared to European Way (our way pretty much so), lack of balance in a lot of my friends and colleagues, unhealthy habits that may backfire later on in life (serious health problems for example that would hamper any career goals), workaholic attitudes etc. things like that. @@Jayarbuck Completely agree. Being a professional musician these days, once you make it into the industry (be it in media, or big live events production) there’s not enough time for anything else besides work and professional maintenance (i.e. practicing your instrument). Being meticulously organized on daily basis, is by far the most important ingredient of all (creativity aside - that’s given if you went already that far…). How otherwise would you have time to multitask, wear different hats (sometimes several during one session : a pianist, composer, arranger, sound designer, DAW guru, mixer, PR person etc. etc.) Certainly it’s a game only for a handful of certain individuals, those who figured that out. And than the movie finishes, nobody even bothers reading the final credits… Consumers take everything for granted, and criticize things left and right, without even pausing for a second and thinking : “Gee… that was awesome ! I am wondering who did special effects or where the stuff was filmed, who did the score or sound design).

For me, mornings are a wash due to delayed sleep phase disorder and obstructive sleep apnoea. :( But if they work for you, all power to you. My productive time is afternoons to evenings. I agree on the automation and templating though. The fewer wheels you have to reinvent, the better. In my DAW templates I go to the point of using articulation maps (quite a bit of effort to set up in some DAWs, but you only have to do it once) so I don't need quite as many tracks in my mock-up templates. Definitely agree with the rewards. Calendar blocking works to a point for me, but the Pomodoro technique is very effective when I need to put in extended effort on getting something done.

In the past i tryed to write music in the morning before to go to my students in the afternoon, but it endet up all the time with not to be able to write down all music already existing in my head and after working with my students the music and orchestration in my head was forget, was loosed. Because of this i only compose after my students or if i have one or more days free. I think from this situation i described above, comes the reason not going to bed and not to sleep. But i no more make sleep less nights, you are completely right its not good for healt and for to be focused!!! How does slack work for independant / freelancers? I use slack in my day job but all embloyees are registered in the company. How does it work for someone who has different projects with different companies ?

Sehr cooler Channel, danke.Gruß aus Bremen.

Great video once again with solid points and great tips Anne! Loving your content so far :) Also, would you mind sharing your cue sheet template or provide references to new/young composers that could use to start making their own templates? I saw your video regarding the cue sheet you made but was overwhelmed with the amount of details you provided. Thank you anne! Cheers from Malaysia

Tell me about it! Being a musician and a freaking medic is eating my life away. Planning on dropping the latter for good, and soon too.

The next level could be: automate the automation and control the controls. Ultimately automate the controls and vice versa

Being a professional and being creativ are not really conected to each other. I am not professional, I have a day job to live my life. But that does not stop me from being creativ. Whenever I finished a composition (wich does not mean much because there are always some unfinished partitures are lying around) i often think that I have finished something and I will have some time for other things because what I have just written pleases ma because I did it this way or that way. And then I think I could have made it that way. But that would mean that the cordprogressions must be changed and that mean that and that and I go to the piano and check and think I could have done it like this or like that and then I think "well, let's just write it down". And so I do and I think that a contrast could be done this way and so on..... What do I say here? I say that creativity never stops and can't be controlled. When you have it you have it. When you don't have why trying to become a professional? And eveb being creative does not mean to become a professional. But that is good: nobody can taint my work.

Apart from the obvious questions about decorating in general, I wonder how you came to be in LA? Did you move there to pursue the composing scene?

All very valuable tips that unfortunately don't help when you're forced to work with people who are completely disorganized and need the resulting chaos as validation of how much work and stress they're handling.
