I wasn't enjoyed a channel this much for a long long time. I love your calm, straight, honest vibe, without unnecessary fancy cuts and thank god you have a natural presence, not the kinda default youtube, hyped over every word style. No offense towards anyone, i'm just learning easier in this, calm way. Thank you, you are gold

So true. All the recording work I have done for major labels, studio session work, or live work, has been as a direct result of living in London. Ironically some of the major bands, themselves, live nowhere near London, however, the meeting took place in London. Always great insights and information from this channel.

I believe that the most important thing that an artist has to ask himself/herself is" "where do I want to be in ten years from now ?" Don't attempt to do something that you don't wish for less then 100 % (95 % will get you exactly nowhere). Anne, your description of the ecology of the Performing Arts is totally accurate. All the major disciplines function exactly as you describe: Ballet, Modern Dance, Music, Cirque, Theatre, etc. Ten years is a very realistic timeframe before being able to achieve "success" (according to one's personal goals, of course). As the saying goes, "the harder you work, the luckier you get" ... I agree that location is key. One has to choose to live in one of the Major Cultural Cities / Hubs that epitomizes one's chosen career path. Otherwise, not much will happen ...

Hi Anne. This was another well done video (You are so articulate!). Although music is more of a pastime for me than a career choice, I see a lot of parallel here with other fields. I was an electrical engineer by career, and when I was about the age you were when you moved to LA, I moved to Silicon Valley. This would have been back in the early 1980's, so definitely "pre-internet" era. Never the less, I think there are many corollaries to "being where the work is". It made, I'm sure, a huge impact on my career to make this move. You take the good with the bad when you move to the big city though. If the good sufficiently outweighs the bad, I guess you're ahead of the game. Well done, you.

Especially as a Dutchie it's a very difficult one. Like yeah LA has more opportunities, all the big names are there, etc. But in terms of anything to fall back on as a back-up plan, the US in general, at least to my knowledge, there is none. You either have a job and income, or you're left to rot in the dirt. Not to mention how expensive it is and how car dependant it is. I can't imagine living in a place that's effectively the Amsterdam of the US, whilst barely scraping by (cheapest apartment I found was almost $1400 a month. like what??). Like when you have only have a work permit for film music, how would you find any gig and not go homeless? Go knock on doors? Surely the people don't come to you

Fantastic video once again Anne, thank you! A very important video for composers, when many are more focused on just the craft of scoring. This video has been useful for me, I should be moving to New York sometime in August this year for my masters (would have been now, if not for COVID, so I have to take an online semester), so it's great to hear about perspectives on moving to a big city. Thank you for sharing this insight! The LA move has always been in the back of my mind. I've been able to build up a lot of connections for composing/sound design on the entry-level (commercials/short + low budget films) while in NY, but it does seem that there may be a cap to the kinds of connections I can make here. I'm wondering how you're feeling a full year later though now that it seems the pandemic is sticking around. I'd love to hear an update on this one!

It’s hard to say. Production has definitely ramped up again and plenty of assistant opportunities have opened up over the past couple of months. I don’t know anyone actively working who has left Los Angeles. For me personally it’s still 100% necessary to be here. But again for others the mileage may vary. I still don’t think that starting out here right now might be the best option while the pandemic is still going on. But a lot of events have turned into in person events again. We’re definitely not back to normal though.

Video game companies are also here in the Bay Area, where I am, but specifically in Silicon Valley. Manila, Philippines 🇵🇭 has a growing music industry. I saw this when I was there. Vancouver has movies 🎥 and studios where Americans go to take advantage of the exchange rate. I saw plenty of them when I was there. Music has been growing there since the 1970s. Anne, thank you for yet ANOTHER GREAT video! I dearly appreciate your videos so much, and they inspire me more and more to think of ways to step my foot in the music/film door somewhere after high school. So, many thanks! Also, video topic idea: How to connect and network (mainly traveling to different places) on a VERY (like very low for me at the moment) low budget?
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
@AnneKathrinDernComposer 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked it. I don't really know much about how to travel and network on a low budget because I only traveled to LA and that was it. I don't really travel to far away events outside of LA, unless it's for a production but then of course the studio is paying for it. As I'm saying in the video - quick event networking without follow-up is not worth all that much in my experience. For my one journey to LA, I worked several jobs for many years next to my full-time studies - as a waitress, a cleaning lady, a maid in a hotel, a receptionist, mail delivery, teaching... You name it, anything to add to my LA survival budget. So that's really the only advice I'd give - get a job or two and save money. I'm sure others who do this may know more about this kind of stuff - from credit cards good for travel to cheap accommodations, etc.

I perceive it easier to work in the US for creative arts. But - if you are in the US - it es way easier to work off site. It is somehow strange. A friend in NYC is a 3d artist. And he did not have a lot of trouble to get gigs to work in the industry. Once he had those and was known, he started to travel the world. Before Corona he was residing in a 5 Star Hotel in Hanoi. But generally - I think it is a good idea to go at least for a couple of years to California.

Hi Anne, I have to say that you are a life saver, you passed me so many emotions because I can only immagine how difficult it is to make a living in this field, and after watching your video I am more motivated than ever to come to LA and become the best composer that I can possibly be doing what I love. I'm planning to move to LA after college (I think three years from now) and of course, also talking to other composers that are living in LA, I got a bit scared about VISA (I'm too from Europe) because many guys after a year of internship don't find jobs so quickly and the US law force them to move back in Europe. So I was thinking, do you think that in the future you'll do a video about VISA and your experience with that? I heard that the titles and credits that you own are very important, is that true? Thank you so much in advance and I'm really happy that you arrived to do what you wanted to do full time. Stay safe, Roberto

Woule be an interesting video. My guess F1+ OPT afterwards then moved on to O1B and eventually EB1A greencard. But that was pre-COVID which obviously impacted immigration tremendously and will still do so for most of 2021. I would assume it is also very hard or even impossible at the moment for any direct O1B visa applicant outside the country to build the required deal memo, find potential work offers etc to qualify since lots of the industry is uncertain or on hold. I think this is more an endeavor for next year at the earliest.
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
@AnneKathrinDernComposer 3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you liked the video! I will not be doing a video about immigration because I am not the most qualified person to speak about this and the rules change every year. Most immigration attorneys give free consultations and there's also plenty of up-to-date information on official government websites. This is something that needs to be handled by a legal professional, not by me. My only advice is to invest in a good lawyer with a good track record who knows exactly what immigration officers want to see in your application.

Good video. An Interesting question might be - "how would moving to LA help you land films in Berlin?". The film industry is no longer centred only around LA. Sure, if you're goal is to make it in the AAA world then yes, that's where to go. But that's a rare ticket. Also you miss out on the thousands of other gigs around the world. Excluding the AAA movies out there - LA is barely a dot on the surface of the global film business. By focussing on LA, you miss the myriad other opportunities. Move to LA if LA style film production is your goal but there are many other roads worth travelling.
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
@AnneKathrinDernComposer 3 жыл бұрын
Well, as I'm saying in the video, it's not for everyone and not ideal for everything. If studio films isn't the goal, then this might not necessarily be the place to be. Aside from that though I'm also mentioning how I am still getting plenty of opportunities from around the world so I don't feel like I'm missing out all that much by focusing on LA. It's such a melting pot of cultures in the film and music industry. To answer your question "How would moving to LA help you land films in Berlin?" - I've scored "Four Enchanted Sisters" (Vier zauberhafte Schwestern), "Lilly's Bewitched Christmas" (Hexe Lilli rettet Weihnachten), "Help I Shrunk My Parents" (Hilfe ich hab meine Eltern geschrumpft), and the upcoming sequel "Help I Shrunk My Friends" (Hilfe ich hab meine Freunde geschrumpft). All were German Studio productions with a wide theatrical release. But I only got these because I'm in LA because the first ones were done by Klaus Badelt - who ended up collaborating with me and handed me these gigs. So I'd never have had these being in Germany and I've gotten quite a bit of hate from some German composers for taking "their" gigs away from them while being in LA. Also, there is something to be said for having Hollywood productions on your resume - it might just put you in a position of advantage when productions overseas are comparing your credentials to another composer, and they might end up hiring you for it.
@scoremix8556
@scoremix8556 3 жыл бұрын
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer my point is, LA is not the Mecca of the film biz anymore. You getting gigs in Germany says more about your ability ( artistic and network) than your location. Klaus working with you is brilliant but anecdotal. An unlikely occurrence to often repeat! The industry, for music, is location agnostic. And that’s a good thing!!! Unless folks are absolutely set on the LA thing id thoroughly advise most to get their gig wings locally first. 90% of the film industry is away from LA ( tent poles removed).
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
@AnneKathrinDernComposer 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure the claims you make are rooted in facts but you are right that my musings are mostly anecdotal and rooted in personal experience - which is of course based in LA. So who knows what the future holds and what the right path for others is.
@vancomposer
@vancomposer 3 жыл бұрын
@@scoremix8556 At no point during her video I had the impression she is saying THAT... LA is still the "Mecca for film biz"... clearly in reference to AAA, which obviously only a small fraction of worldwide composers work on and otherwise, YES there are certainly other good places. In my personal case I make 90% of my income still from European work, primarily TV through production music and direct documentaries. But I do live in the USA for 4+ years now and even though all my work here is still low budget, with at least each year a step up also in income so far, I must say that there is certainly more opportunity here then in comparison to Germany. AND I dont even live permanently in LA and at this point and dont want or plan to. Las Vegas for example has a nice Indy movie scene where I got my first films, there is music required for Casino commercials for example and things also overlap and connect to LA sometimes. Beside that I can still work or even travel back to Europe for events. Now for all international folks the first major obstacle will be a VISA anyways, since whatever your plans are it starts or even ends for the most part right THERE. And of course I am talking mainly pre-COVID and who knows yet what post-pandemic will look like. I believe it will probably get back to a somewhat normal or even little boom, but certainly take time.

Thanks for watching! I don't know anything about the BIFSC but in general scoring competitions don't do much for most people's career as far as I can see. If I were to give advice, I'd probably look at previous winners and see if this did anything to elevate their careers. Then I'd try to judge whether the entrance fee (if there is one) is worth it as well as the time spent creating the competition piece - or if maybe that time was better spent on more tangible pursuits like networking directly with filmmakers and composers.

So much of the whole music industry is based on recommendations you need to be where you can meet and make industry people aware you exist. But as a big name artist told me the hard part is balancing your time between networking and making contacts and spending your time building and sharping your skills. You spend too much time networking your skills aren't going to be good enough if you get the call, but spend too much time on working on your skills no one knows you exist.

Hi Anne, I'm surprised there is still work in Hollywood at the moment. Here in Europe, everything comes to a halt, and I hear from friends from LA that it is even more dramatic there. Luckily I was able to score a big online show recently, but at the moment it isn't easy to make a good living with music. Maybe people with a lot of money, wealthy parents can still survive?
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
@AnneKathrinDernComposer 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the LA film industry is very adaptive, especially since there is so much infrastructure on the studio lots that can be modified and isolated. It came to a halt shortly and then the film industry got an exemption from the lockdown as an essential business. A lot of changes were made and things are going a bit slower but they still are going. Animation is also still going and so are video games. There were also a lot of productions already in post last year which weren't affected and a lot of European productions filmed in summer last year when things were open. I think those who weren't working much in the first place are probably struggling and I wouldn't say it's possible to find new work right now for newcomers. But for those who already have a steady flow of work and who have made connections here over the past few years, it still continues more or less as usual, just a bit slower due to all the safety precautions. I don't know about wealthy parents or people with a lot of money - I'm sure it helps in times of crisis but none of my friends here would fall into that category. What certainly does help is passive income right now - like royalties or union residuals. But of course that is money that was worked for over long periods of time.

Good morning Anne, I know it's not very appropriate to ask here below, but I would like to ask you if possible, some advice for young composers like me. I am an Italian sound engineer with a non-academic musical background and next year I would like to start Bachelor in composition in the Netherlands, as a personal experience do you feel like recommending a Bachelor specialized in film scoring(like ARTEZ)or in traditional composition(like Royal conservatory in The Hague)? Thank you for your time and congratulations for your videos that I follow very gladly, have a nice day. Josè

I can't give specific individual advice to people I don't know personally. Whether formal education is right for someone and which program works for them is different for everyone. It also depends on what the goal of the education is in the first place.

Hi Anne! Wondering how did you get to LA, did you get a green card or did you get a work visa (what type if you don't mind?) Thanks!

I think that’s a valid point. Even more so, ppl fall out of love with it often once they HAVE to do it every day to make a living. Making a hobby a job (and the main income source) is not always as romantic as some might think.

You say in your vids that you have to be extrovert and u have to share ur work with composers, But by doing that do you actually mean in real life what you say on being an extrovert and showing your work to composers online or where ever you meet them or you just say it to just put some content in your videos because being students and upcoming composers people share their work to such amazing composers like you and you Block them from that social media Platform .🙂

I never said any of this in my videos. I merely advised people to publish their work so they can be found and if one must reach out to someone it should be done through official channels like a business page or a website that leads to a business email. I've cautioned against spamming composers on their private social media accounts because it will lead to blocking or filtering, and I never said you have to be an extrovert. I myself am an introvert so such a statement wouldn't make sense. What I did say is that it helps in crowded events to be an extrovert. Don't put words into my mouth and accuse me of lying to put out content. If you can't be professional in your communications, it's nobody's fault but your own.

@@AnneKathrinDernComposer 18:12 I just tried to do that you know the sharing of work over chat as you said u can’t fly to LA ....investment . But anyways I just wrote what I felt. Some composers appreciate the efforts and some do not and that’s okay just wanted you to know because I was your subscriber. Have a good day 🙂

I literally say nothing like what you’re claiming or doing in this video. Also your private message to me was absolutely rude and your comment here is rude as well. Again, if you can’t be professional and respectful in your communications, then that’s on you.
